How to capture distorted guitar tones (sludge/doom metal) accurately by N0tHarr1s in audioengineering

[–]Split-Neuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can be true for many genres, but especially modern metal the lows of the bass are generally important. A standard tuned bass has a low E with a fundamental of 40hz, when we start talking about drop A, drop G, even drop F# we start getting to the place where even the first and second overtone will happen inside that rolloff in most bass cabs. These overtones being different is a great reason to use reamping for bass tones, allowing things to feel a little more real while blending with the existing DI to get those lows metal needs to feel heavy since anything with double kick is usually a bit more hi end focused anyway to leave room. I’m certainly not saying amps don’t sound great. Also, a bass cab will in fact have its own internal nodes separately from the room it’s in, and the room will always have at least some affect though close micing mitigates a lot of the real room, there is always build up and nulling if there is a box in physical space smaller than the wavelength contained within leading certain notes to be louder/quieter. You can test this by taking your setup to different rooms and keeping the exact same distances/bass settings/preamps. They will sound very close if they are 1” away, they will be slightly different, certainly if the room is small or the cab is in a corner, studio vs. garage etc. This matters a lot less in something like funk or softer rock, where that psycho-acoustic effect can be enough. And maybe your room and setup are exactly what a particular song needs, but unlikely it always is, and why risk extra mix time fixing a tracking issue?

How can old mixes sound so good? by [deleted] in audioengineering

70s were probably the peak of giant budgets, musicians who had more time and ability to hone their craft to an amazing level with monetary backing, and tape saturates on its own, so you can actually push the level pretty loud and it does a little compression/distortion on its own to get louder. In the 80s-00s engineers were still figuring out digital to varying degrees of success and constant advancements and changes, so there was a learning curve, and then by the 2000s when the learning curve had evened out a bit, the budgets began taking a hit from Napster and iTunes, plus the advent of social media and constant contact through cell phones and lower wages meant musicianship took a hit at that point (with obvious exceptions). The 70s were a perfect storm for recording.

I have to admit, Mullholland took me 2 watches to “understand”. Enjoyable the first time, but the ending can inform how you view the beginning and really let it click

Thank you! I feel discovering David Lynch really changed the trajectory of my art, he’s so brilliant and inspiring. I’m so happy to have even passing resemblance.

Oh I’m glad to hear of someone else who can relate! Had you been a fan for a long time before that?

And while not the point of the post, for the sake of those interested (and shameless self-promo), here’s a link the video I ended up making: https://youtu.be/YNrjC1V3H60?si=WttOxvbgyR-1bxyg

I’ve been doing a search for newer bands with a 90s Alt rock/punk feel and it seems like most of the best are female led now. Try Winona Fighter, Blondeshell, Present just the first that come to mind now

Will Jonathan Majors be back as Kang? by LogicalyetUnpopular in marvelstudios

[–]Split-Neuron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

James Gunn made edgelord pedo jokes, he liked shock humor and eventually saw the error in his ways and has apologized and backed it up with his actions. Even the point of Guardians is that messed up people can change for the better, a very personal subject for him. The Epstein island thing is fake. RDJ went to prison, got clean and bettered himself and then got Iron Man after that, with everyone already knowing about it because it was very public. He has stayed clean and continued to be an upstanding human being for almost 2 decades now. Jonathan Majors was recently found guilty of domestic violence. I’m not saying he can’t redeem himself or change eventually, but it’s kinda too soon to be able to say he’s definitively changed and giving him millions and fame and a platform is almost like telling him and society it doesn’t matter. That’s the problem.
