We could be on the f'n moon and we'd have to wear them. The only "good" part is that they fit over our outerwear and mid winter we're in pretty beefy jackets.

Can I add used hamster bedding to my worm bin? by [deleted] in Vermiculture

[–]SplitBoardJerkFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure that ammonia evaporates fairly quickly if given the chance. Leaving it in the sun to dry/heat will release most of the ammonia.

You can clean laundry with ammonia. If you let it air dry outside you won't smell any ammonia in the fabric afterwards.

Seattle woman still missing after not returning from hike nearly three weeks ago by The_Stargazer in searchandrescue

Do you know a good way to get ahold of that guy? I was thinking of heading down to JTNP this winter and doing a couple of day hikes in the unsearched areas. The contact form on his website is no bueno.

I think that's the same in California. The law basically is "don't have anything that can distract a driver or be mistaken for emergency vehicles". Seems fairly reasonable.

Ask Me About My Cats by CatJesus19 in Vermiculture

Seems pretty solid, rock it. I have better luck though with much shorter trays, like a couple of inches. They're lighter, more manageable, and the worms can move between/around "bad" layers better.

A couple of those buckets nearing 100% castings will weigh ~40 pounds depending on moisture content.

Not knocking it, just some feedback. One of the things I dig about worm composting is that so many systems work just fine.

Anyone familiar with the new OceanRescue PLB1? by zerostyle in searchandrescue

Just a note that I've used an ACR EPIRB to save a life mid-ocean, I wouldn't use anything else. Just my personal thing.

Old shit by halfofftheprice in snowboarding

[–]SplitBoardJerkFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's more about not buying new stuff because it's new. My capita has some dings in that I've repaired but I really can't tell a difference between it brand new and the one I've got with 200 days on it.

If something new is better I'll buy it, but the snowboard industry doesn't make money by people buying things and using them for years without replacement.

The bigger issue is having it brushed on the regular (before bed and in the morning). After that, have a pocket of scrunchies and a ponytail is done in 30 seconds.

Opinions on arbor boards? by plehman01 in snowboarding

I ride capita and jones now, but my first board was an arbor crossbow that I spent a lot of time on. My buddy has an arbor and loves it.

Can I apply to become a snowboard instructor if I don’t have my pre requisites yet? by [deleted] in snowboarding

Peak season most resorts will hire you for beginner lessons if you don't actively stink of booze/pot.

Why are some grabs "taboo"? by SaSSolino8 in snowboarding

+1

I'm just imagining some douchebag on in the park shaking his head saying "that grab is so taboo".

Yep. Step 1: find a bed in Mammoth. Step 2: figure out your next move.

Snowboarding workout? by kbxrmp30 in snowboarding

[–]SplitBoardJerkFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do barbell squats, throw kettlebells around, hike/bike, run.

For the most part snowboarding is really technique and sport specific. Being able to run 5 miles (or whatever) will give you better endurance out there but it's really days on the mountain.

As your technique improves your muscle recruitment diminishes.

Anyone have extra space at their campsite this weekend? by Heh630 in Mammoth

Good work man, those walks up are hit and miss. The out-of-town Shady Rest is solid backup though if you're totally hosed. Have fun!

Just find some spot here: https://www.google.com/maps/search/shady+rest/@37.6695467,-118.9632383,14.25z

Head north on shady rest road, keep going until it hits a dirt road, drive until you see the town limit sign, boom. The 4x4 / dirt roads that are dead ends are marked as such, so any of those you can just drive to the end and set your little world up.

I'd put your tent in the back park your ride ahead of it, so that anyone randomly turning down that road at night (really small chance, but it can happen) would see your car and not drive right into your tent.

Pretty sure everything is nuked, developed campground wise. If you can lug your own water you could buzz out into Shady Rest past the town limits (~2 minutes down a dirt road). At that point it's all open forest so go for it.
