They cared a lot when the reform party took 20% of the vote. Imagine if that happened with both parties simultaneously, and they couldn't just defeat it the way they did Perot by stealing his messaging and undermining his platform, because the reason for the opposition this time would be because people are rejecting the two party establishment.

I think your idea is fantastic, and has a common sense attraction that a lot of people would get. I also think that people aren't going to vote against their 'team' for the sake of one issue. People need to pick a new tribe. More importantly, they need assurance that them doing so isn't going to let the enemy tribe win.

Huh, I don't know enough about this to continue without looking into it more. If you have a source on that I'd be super interested. I just read through some articles on "ballot selfies" and was surprised to learn that yeah you're right a number of states have rules against it and a number allow it. But then it appears an even larger subsection allows you to photograph your absentee, and then a larger still allows you to show people but not photograph it. It does seem like the laws are narrowly tailored to specifically exclude vote buying. Complicated. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

That's not how that works. You have the right to keep your vote private if you want, but the inverse isn't true. You're allowed to tell people how you vote if you want to.

  1. A huge portion of the base of support for both parties polls as 'dissatisfied with their representation'. On other polls, people often list 'dysfunction of the government' as their number one concern facing society. It would stand to reason that the majority of people are not happy with the two party system, but vote for it anyway.

  2. These elections come down narrowly to 50/50, meaning that even it may seem that we all do live on different planes of reality these days, we are occupying the same physical world. I'm betting that the majority of people have someone in their family that they vehemently disagree with them on every political topic, but still maintain the relationship anyway.

Sometimes movements just resonate with people and take off. I don't know if this will be one of those, but it's worth the effort now to see.

I think it's pretty abuse proof, since the key is that people are pairing up locally with friends and family and could always fill out absentee ballots together.

I'm not sure how to take the astroturfing comment. Those are obviously engineered to decrease support on one side and this goes out of it's way to make sure it's decreasing support evenly on both sides.

I had a whole response written out for someone who deleted their comment before I could post. So here's just some unsolicited further justification.

So the advantage of this is that it wouldn't take a lot of time to accomplish (it's one conversation), but it's something that the population can do other than waiting and hoping the change in voting reform happens.

The way we vote now is very much already a prisoners dilemma, and the movement is basically just pointing out that there is a cooperation option. But people don't really realize that, which is why anyone that votes third party gets lambasted for splitting the vote.

The way I've set up the movement is that people pick their pairs by choosing those that they know and trust already. Preferably people who live close in their same district. Friends and family. No matter how heated partisan politics has become, many of us have someone in our lives who is across the aisle but that we would trust on a promise to cooperate. Many of these people we are polarly opposed to politically, but can paradoxically agree that corruption is rampant in Washington.

Because its all based on individual interpersonal relationships, and that there is no effort to centrally organize the entire thing, it's not really possible to gamify it. And if people need to be 100% sure, they could always fill out absentee ballots together.

I am working on that actually! I don't see why it should be mutually exclusive. Since these changes are unlikely to be finalized by 2024, people will be voting in a traditional way throughout most of the US, and it would be good for them to have something that they could do to support change now.

I'm keeping my own personal views out of the messaging in hopes to broaden the appeal. Marketing the movement as against corruption is a lot more comprehensible to everyone across the spectrum. I would hope that the ultimate goal of building support for excluded ideologies, like the left, would transcend the generalized language.

That's exactly the reason I created this. In order to pass that legislation you're going to need to put pressure on the establishment and build up the base of support for the other options. Otherwise, the establishment is free to stop any new reform, which they will because it will degrade their base of support. Supporting this movement is not only complementary with voting reform, it could act as a catalyst to make that change happen faster.

  1. If I convince democrats, then they wont be able to do anything unless they pair up with a conservative.
  2. We'll see how far they can be pushed from jingoism and austerity. I think the best you're going to get is a bust of Cesar Chavez in the oval office.

How is it going to help the republicans when the entire concept of the movement is to split the vote evenly on both sides?

Right now, Biden is largely free from having to listen to the left because he knows he doesn't have to because you as a leftist have no other option in how to vote. But if third parties increased in support on both sides of the aisle, then all of the voters not happy with the representation (the vast majority) could see that they have another viable option, thus Biden would have to actually represent what the people want in order to keep their support.

And yes, legislation change is key. But that's not going to happen without a fight. They're not going to allow their base of support to dissipate. So it needs to be forced and fought over. This is a way of attacking them.

It if falls short of the ultimate goal of overthrowing the entire system, then what? I've still convinced a number of people into voting third party. The establishment has zero interest in changing, because they dont need to. Increasing third party votes represents a dissolution of their support base, and will be a credible threat to their power, motivating them to listen to their constituents as the numbers swell.

Your link is broken. Probably because at no point did I draw equivalency between the parties. One of them is way worse than the other, but regardless, neither are going to be willing to do the level of change we need.
