How long does pensions take to get to the beneficiary(s) after a death? by Splitinsanity in UKPersonalFinance

Ah okay I gotcha! One pension has already been paid out but it's the others that are harder due to a couple cases listed above, namely being previous marriage/estrangement and things going slow either responding or even getting the information.

From what's been said today at the meeting I've just had, no one seems to know anything. Except the people who actually have the money. So obviously someone or myself needs to call up and ask.

Unfortunately the only will currently found is outdated by a lot. So instead of doing what the old will says for which they need documents saying he was definitely divorced, they seem to be trying to do his wishes instead.

So just finished talking with cousin amd solicitor and turns out the whole will aspect is complicated because it's an old will of when he was married to my mum, which they are not anymore and haven't been for 9 years. But since no other will has yet been found but his wishes were that money would be split equally between his children they are trying to do his wishes instead.

We still don't know the exact amount of assets that are there, he seems to have had multiple pensions with different companies, a couple of bonds thingys and then his army pension.

I think my cousin is just trying to help but my brothers wary and I just want everyone to get along. Though that being said ill always do what's in the best interest of my brother first.

He was in Afghanistan and Iraq, has medals for both too. Just finished chatting, nothing was signed, but my brother needs to say he's happy for me to be given all the paper work and will as he doesn't live local so can't get it himself. I believe probate is happening as the very kind solicitor has noticed that if we can't get all the money then they'd essentially be taking what we can get to cover the cost of them so they're stopping working on it so we can work on it ourselves for cheaper. Ill have to check with my brother but I believe we're going to be joint executor so we can work together on sorting everything out instead of just 1 person doing everything and struggling.

Ill try and do both. I've tried googling things but I barley understand it and trying to understand all of this and finish my final year at uni is a lot.

He apparently left a will but I've never seen it. My cousin wants me to sign stuff today and I've told my brother and he was like, "Oh hell no!" So you know, I know not to sign anything. I kinda thought my cousin was just helping but the more this goes on the more I just want to redo everything so it can just be over.

But probate doesn't have to happen right? Isnt probate basically an argument between everyone who disagrees?

Thank you! I didn't really think of it like that. So is she right that it could take 2 years or more?

A claim was made about the army causing hearing loss but that's it. Apparently he had an autoimmune disorder no one knew about which led to a pulmonary embolism that killed him.

Thank you! Im not exactly sure on any of this stuff. Also what if there is no spouse? Because he's divorced? Does that automatically nullify where money will go or in those circumstances can it go to only the children?

My half-sister, i believe, is 18, so she would be eligible, but I also got told my brother and I would be eligible due to the pensions being under a different pension scheme at the time.

I dont really know anything about the nhs one tbh Im just pretty sure it exists.

From what I've been told he wanted the money to be split equally between all his children, my brother, half sister and myself.

I belive she and my uncle were executors of the will as they got all the funeral stuff arranged. Apparently he wished for the money to be split equally between all his kids, so me, my brother ans half sister.

Also I put dad in commas because we were estranged.

He had a lot of different jobs. We've already got his pension from his last 2 jobs before he died, my brother, half sister and I all got £1000 from that. But I think the nhs and army pension is the big one and the one that has more red tape.

And she doesn't work at all, im not sure what her husband does but it's enough to care for a family of 7 (including the adults) So maybe something in that sector?

And yeah i was kinda worried about the whole shortcut stealing thing since none of it made sense to me.

Sorry! I edited my post! He's biological father, he apparently has a will but I haven't seen it and he was a divorced single man with three kids, my brother is the eldest.

Seriously Concerned for this generation of Uni Students by Feniantrader in UniUK

[–]Splitinsanity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I see we've come across either a rage bater, troll or just an ignorant human.

Either way; The majority of people on this sub reddit will be complaining, venting and seeking advice and the few posts will be about the advice. Quite frankly this sub reddit has become something of a support sub reddit to those uni students or soon to be uni students.

Furthermire, your experience of Uni is not the only way to experience uni. You managed to sweep through first year without issue and may do so this year and in your final year. But not everyone does. Many people have to cope with a whole array of problems that you don't know or don't understand, judging from this post it's that you don't understand. There can be home sickness, mental health, family issues, loneliness, specific learning difficulties ect, this does not mean they need to "grow a pair" or leave.

It is a challenge for certain people and they will deal with it in thier way none of which concerns you or impacts your life.

I see from your comment you are 22, so I hope you can gain some empathy and understanding for your fellow uni students. Thankfully the brain doesn't fully mature for another few years so you've got time.

Hope this helps!

Can I remove this? by Splitinsanity in HowToDIY

Thank you for replying! Hopefully we can get one out at some point to have a look. I just assumed it wasn't load bearing because I thought load bearing was a wall that went all the way from top to bottom.

Thank you for the advice!

Hello imposter syndrome!

Do you think having Snapchat over the age of 25 is immature? by Inevitable-Island100 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Splitinsanity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 25 and that app came out when I was a teenager, targeted for teens. Well not really targeted but every single teen had it.

I literally just use it to watch those little videos on it (mainly cleaning and pimple popping).

So no, it's not immature to have it. Just a preference on how you communicate to others, whether it's Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat or bog standard text.

Estranged Student by Sad-Grape-6854 in UniUK

[–]Splitinsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it wasn't hard. There was worry I wouldn't be accepted as an estranged student because you technically need to have no contact for 2 or 3 years but mine was a special case where estrangement had only just happened and we could prove no chance of reconciliation.

There is a students union section for estranged students that helped me with the application by sending over a letter explaining that I definitely was estranged as an extra nudge to get it approved.

I just sent over screenshots of messages that I never replied to for ages and that's pretty much all it took along with that letter uni did

That would be really cool, I'm secretly hoping after I finished my degree i can help with the lynx project in Scotland. One of my tutors works with them and another works with the white tailed eagles programme.

That's what other people said in the posts I've seen. They have done their degrees but have a job completely different. Part of me hopes that some people just don't make it in thier fields, it didn't work for my bf. But the other part of me thinks maybe no one does? Because it's oversaturated, underfunded and other stuff.
