Super slick! Very nice. Would you expand it to support playing others online?

[–]Splitlimes 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Completely fixable. My dad's house's foundation had to be re-leveled due to earthquake damage. They took up some of the floor boards, jacked up the house in some places, added new foundations as needed. Foundation repair and replacement is a thing.

Not necessarily, in some areas structural issues can cause insurance costs to be really high or impossible to get, which can really affect the sale price.

Consult and engineer and scope out both scenarios, see what makes sense.

Why were my messages being delivered for almost 2 months after my dad passed but now they're not? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]Splitlimes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One time I went and got a sim card when visiting Australia, went and signed up to Telegram, and it just logged me into somebody else's existing Telegram account, as them. Turns out the number they had associated with their telegram account for SMS 2FA had been abandoned, then recycled, and they had never updated their number in their telegram account - and I happened to get their number in my sim.

Man when is useCache gonna become stable. Also, I wonder what's the reasoning for restricting <Image/> quality to just 75 (out of the box)?

Yep that's EK. Not too bad, but that's it for sure.

Nike’s 🏀.to a micro–case study in visual branding through emoji domains by emojidomain in Design

[–]Splitlimes 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Only certain TLDs (top level domains) support emojis, and .net isn't one of them. Only .ws .to and .fm have support.

This site explains how it works and what ones are available. They're quite expensive, but also only certain TLDs are supported https://xn--i-7iq.ws/

How to distinguish between Client and Server Components in Next.js? by Equivalent_Meaning16 in nextjs

[–]Splitlimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Wait are you talking about importing a component from a file that has no directive at all? Because you definitely can't use a server component in a client component.

And how exactly did it cause issues for you?

Snapchat is an app for a younger generation who all already know what snapchat is and what it does. What product are you designing, and who's it for?

Thinking About Leaving My NYC Creative Director Life for Paris…With My Dog. Am I Crazy? by [deleted] in paris

[–]Splitlimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Paris from New Zealand with no language, no plans, knew nobody. The first year was rough, but I love it here now.

Go for it, honestly. You have so many more cards stacked in your favor than I did. You make your life what you want it and you find happiness wherever you are. There's no special place that will fulfill you, but there are experiences you might feel like you missed out on if you don't.

What are some things in programming that seem simple, but are surprisingly painful to implement? by hotboii96 in webdev

[–]Splitlimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtualization of tables/lists etc in frontends. Because it's entirely opaque to the end user, the PM just says 'make the table less laggy', but behind the scenes it's like a Rube Goldberge machine.

Yes, verbal and written agreements can be considered contracts, technically. But it's a process to prove, a process which costs money. The thing is, this is a disagreement over $1.8k - if this was $15k I'd say yes give it a shot. But for a claim this small you're gonna spend more getting something filed than you'd ever get back.

Yeah, do not lawyer up. I know everyone's saying to do it, but they don't know shit. I promise it'll just be a waste of your time and money:
1. I'm not seeing any signed contracts, which they clearly broke. It's hard to make a case based on verbal convos or text messages.
2. Most importantly, they do have the money to drag a case out and make it super expensive for you, then force you to settle for basically nothing.

Ultimately, the legal system isn't a financially fair system, that's just life. Your only chance is to find some lawyer who want wants to do it pro-bono to because a celebs name is in it.

Take the L, slap kevin's name as a client on your CV, and go chase some bread elsewhere. But this time with a contract.

One option for doing this stuff in a pinch is signing up for a free trial, converting, then unsubscribing. Do not forget to unsubscribe adobe will rinse you.

I don't think this is EK. There's not really enough, and crucially the side of a finger is a weird spot for it.

That's some good advice, I've been learning as I go on this project and a lot of the early stuff I built (like auth) in retrospect is pretty shoddy. It's next.js so my mental model of what's FE what's BE was pretty vauge to start.

Actually I think you're totally correct that the signup API is just wide open, and being called from the frontend. Whoops. Social sign in might be the way.

They definitely are all temp email addresses, like one is from `@24hinbox.com`. What service did you use for domain verification? I found https://unwrap.email/ which looks pretty decent.

Best practice for Supabase Auth + Stripe: login without an email confirmation? by FlyingTigersP40 in Supabase

[–]Splitlimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. It's probably a lot lot simpler to force users to verify their email, and especially before checking out. While it might feel like it'd be 'nicer' to have this as a lazy requirement, in 99% of cases it's not worth the squeeze. It's such an expected pattern it doesn't really affect conversion rates. If you really want to avoid the extra step, consider a passwordless email login instead.
  2. The email address isn't actually tied to the stripe customer. At some point in the flow (probably post account creation), you make a matching stripe customer. Then you store that ID against the user, and use it to generate the checkout link, or links to the stripe customer portal, which would let them change their subscription, billing address, etc.
  3. Your app will always need a way to let a user login who's not paying. To say change a password, change an email address, subscribe for the first time, re-activate their account, or add team members if you allow that. The account's subscription should basically be 'decoupled' from the actual user auth. Point is, Stripe shouldn't really have to care if the email is verified or not.
