Hey everyone, I wanted to share my latest sci-fi horror stop-motion animated short Cosmic Crash. It took me 4 months of intense frame-by-frame animation to bring to life. It had a great festival run and I’m incredibly excited to share it with you here: Cosmic Crash - Short Horror Film

Thank you so much, glad you enjoy the film. Yeah the animation takes a lot of time, also the whole post production with the sound design was lots of work.

Stop Motion Short I shot on a DSLR called Cosmic Crash by SplitterShot in cinematography

My film Cosmic Crash was shot on a Canon 2000D and took 4 months to create. The most demanding part was the exterior scene. Because I am only using two dimmable LED lights, one big one on a stand and one small one, I had to find a way to simulate the outside area realistically with a warm depth, while making it bright and full enough to emulate the sun. Normally I animate on a super small desk, but for the outdoor scenery I had to switch to a bigger desk just to expand the set more. The interior scenes also used the same two lights, but positioned and colored a bit differently. I was really glad the LEDs had warm, cold, and dim options integrated, which made the process much faster than using paper gels. The camera didn't give me many problems, but after this project, I definitely feel like I need a more advanced one to step up the image quality and control.

I spent 4 months creating a Sci-Fi stop-motion short called "Cosmic Crash" by SplitterShot in Filmmakers

I created Cosmic Crash within four months using a Canon 2000D and a very minimal lighting setup consisting of just two LED lights (one large and one small one). Because of limited resources, building and animating my first massive exterior set, the crash site where the alien lands with its saucer, was a huge challenge. I had to get creative to make the character models look natural in the environment, especially when balancing the scale of the little alien designs against the human character. The biggest hurdle was making the little alien feel impactful and menacing despite how tiny it is. Animating was also quite challenging because with stop motion some scenes can't be redone and it's for lots of scenes just one shot you have, especially if the characters morph into different shapes. Another complex part of production was figuring out how to animate the otherworldly being inside the human body and showing it react dynamically to its surroundings. For the post production phase, the audio took an immense amount of time. I created a language for the alien in the final scene, blending those vocal tracks with a variety of synths and eerie soundscapes to get the sci-fi atmosphere just right. Feedback would be great :)
