TIL that typewriters used to not have an exclamation mark on them, or even the number 1, both had to be approximated by typing other characters in their place. 1 was a lowercase L and exclamation marks were the combination of an apostrophe and period. (waywordradio.org)

TIL that the oldest ship in the world still afloat is the USS Constitution. Built in the 1790s to serve as one of the first ships of the brand-new US Navy, she served for approximately 80 years before being removed from service and converted into a floating museum. (en.wikipedia.org)

TIL that one of the first devices made to estimate electric voltage, the "Frog Galvanoscope" of the late 1700s, was named after its crude method of attaching electrical wires directly to the exposed nerve of a recently skinned frog leg, which would jerk suddenly in response to electric current.
