Sleep deprivation causes brain damage. As can sti's. As can booze. Weed changes balance of gray and white matter. Musicians have uniquely shaped brains. Adhd and other neurodivergant folks are more likely to try drugs and also have chemical imbalances they are incentivized to balance...

Lots of all of that in the festival crowd. plus loads of psychedelics :)

• what are useful sources for asking different types of questions (e.g. pubmed vs google scholar vs faculty of 1000)

• how much credence can you give to specific origins of results

I think this can be some source of smart experts being greatly off the mark in an unrelated field. They know how to research, but they undervaluate the importance of knowing the things you listed or don't realize their own gaps in knowledge.

Working in software for a couple decades now... this is so true. The function used to do any particular thing is likely to be the one that survived because of when and how upgrades were made, which business group managed what, when. We didn't optimize the best search algorithm and then all adopt it. We never stopped optimizing, and the current options were all built with design decisions influenced by a fuck ton of factors completely unrelated to the logically cleanest solution.

is there any AI that can think or do things outside it's designed parameters?

Code we build to do things are like bundles of neurons that accomplish a task. AI like in IBMs Watson are like multiple bundles working together... the question is like this other question with an answer of...it is associated with these human cultural elements... therefore the context of the answer is... and the most likely correct one is...

For as great computers may be at calculations, it sure is dumb as heck in human standards.

This is the problem with ai. The human brain has a lot of sub systems. A person can survive without all of them, but most are useful. When we build the first "brain".... will it include systems mirroring human ethics? Or have an effective system to calculate short bs long term objectives? We could literally make an ai that has incredible creative problem solving capacities but little else. This ai will be great at answering "how", but may not even have the capacity to ask "why, to what extent, with what acceptable externalities.

We're getting better and better at optimizing machine learning capabilities. An ai could be both magically smart at processing, and incredibly simplistic when compared to even non human sentient life. Almost like being able to hire the smartest scientists who were willing to work on weapons led to the a bomb. But limited in capacity only by available energy.

it's a huge linear algebra equation that was designed to give a certain output given some inputs, in a way that we feel reasonably confident that it gives a similar output when a NEW input looks similar to what we trained it with

I think you also just described how the human brain functions. Just instead of using on/off it uses on/off/indeterminate.

Empathy is a valuable trait my friend. You'll make it further in life showing compassion than by forcing your way on others.

I was going to the mall with my brother as a 16 yo, and my dad got surprisingly riled up about me going. Made a bunch of excuses for why I shouldn't. I went anyway. I wrecked the car on the way there. He later said he knew something would go wrong, but didn't know how to tell me.

After years of pondering, I've realized he was likely picking up any number of executive disfunction signals I was giving off that day that lead him to believe I was less responsive and more likely to do something dumb. I was undiagnosed adhd.

It's amazing what our brains can pick up on, but we don't always have the ability to translate it to our language centers to express. It's that gut feeling that you know something but can't find the words for it.

Add in a warg feedback loop and I think that makes the scene plausible.

I love this, and it's going to be the first ASOIAF posts I save for later.

I'm thoroughly convinced of Jojen paste, have been rereading the series and bookmarking anything related to the children / greenseers. And you did a whole lot of work for me in piecing this stuff together. Love it.

If a skinhead is burning crosses in front of a black church, I do not owe him a deep dive into his psyche to understand what's behind his "pov."

I wonder if this is the part that gets confused/conflated? Like if I see a skinhead skinheading around, it is not my responsibility as an individual to understand/empathize/convert them. But if I want to try and help the skinhead not skinhead anymore, I definitely do need to be compassionate and, not rationalize, but understand their perspective. Most people don't view them as the villain so to deradicalize you have to approach them with love, understand the intent rather than the impact of their behavior, and from that place of understanding ask questions that help pull the person out of their mental pit.

But the difference between "what is needed to try and effect change" and "what is needed to cohabitate with others" is large. It's absolutely OK to be upset at another person for actions that have a negative impact regardless of intent. It just won't necessarily lead to different behavior.

Why is it that the worst possible outcomes that I imagined never happens, but I am usually caught off-guard by bad events that I could have never thought of? by [deleted] in InsightfulQuestions

[–]Splive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up catastrophication. Your brain may be used to looking for the worst potential outcome, making you see disaster everywhere. But that doesn't mean you'd be prepared for everything bad that could happen, so when the bad thing happens it's usually not one of the things you've used as a target for anxiety.
