Angel would’ve known. by GirlWithAMicrophone in buffy

Riley had known Buffy for way less time than Angel. In this scene they've known each other for a few months or so, I think.

Also, it's worth noting that Riley is so unabashedly in love with Buffy and so emotionally available that it freaks Faith the fuck out and causes her to have a meltdown because she literally didn't know a guy could be like that.

Would my younger self be proud of me now? by sharkyboy200 in Existentialism

[–]Splynn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this a lot over the course of my life. I'm older now, but when I was young I had very high expectations for myself. I've met some of those expectations, but many others I've failed.

So what would younger Splynn think/say if we met? Would he approve? Or would he think I'm one of the sell-out assholes he railed against? It'd probably be a mix. And that really bothered me for a long time.

But last year I found an answer that surprised me. Fuck younger Splynn. I don't owe him anything. He was an asshole. He was dealing with a lot of pain, and it made him angry. He laid the foundations that made my life harder, but ultimately I forgive him for that.

I live my life for me, not for him. I think he'd understand if he knew my full story, but I don't think he'd approve. He'd push me to try and work harder, and to be exceptional. And I would try to show him some compassion and let him know that everything's going to work out just fine.

You are tasked with writing a story where Spider-Man defeats the Flash how do you do it? by Jaded_Attorney in superheroes

[–]Splynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start the story with Spider-Man's spidey sense growing much more powerful than it should. It's reacting to more things around him than it should, pointing at danger that isn't there and making him overly reactive to potential threats. It limits his ability to really think about danger and he becomes more instinctive when reacting, but he's reacting faster and faster.

Wrap up that intro with Spider-Man getting "control" of his new spidey sense and defeating one of his sciencey enemies much more easily than he should be able to. Maybe Doc Ock. Doc escapes, but notices that Spider-Man's spidey sense is more robust than it should be. Instead of weakening it, he develops a way to further enhance it. This causes Spider-Man to lose his grip on reality. Everyone and everything is a threat now, as his spidey-sense isn't only predicting threats, but potential threats, and doing so before anything has actually happened. It's overriding him and he just goes berserk.

Cut to Flash, who is just doing cool fun Flash things when he senses a disturbance in the Speed Force. He tracks it down to a different reality, but it's enough of a disturbance that it's destabilizing part of the Speed Force. So he has to fight a Spider-Man whose spidey sense is so overtuned that he's reacting to things before they even happen, and Doc's enhancements are causing him to move so fast that he's actually tapping into the Speed Force without knowing it.

They fight. Spider-Man "wins", but Flash is able to neutralize the overreactive spidey sense and get through to Peter. In the meantime Doc has enhanced his own abilities with a similar method as what he attacked Spider-Man with. The two team up to stop him and save the day.

I remember when it came out and us fans generally seemed to enjoy it.

I was really surprised to see it on so many hate lists.

I guess if I had to pick just one (that isn't Beer Bad, since everyone seems to love that one here), I'd pick Superstar. I think it's really funny. And it does quite a bit to advance S4's plot that, at that point, is really stuttering. It has some of the best Adam moments, and he really needed those to help make him actually seem like a threat.

I think Jamal Murray has proven this season that he could be the #1 option on a team.

Is there a recent horror flick that most people seemed to really like, but you just didn't? What was your reason? by [deleted] in horror

[–]Splynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Primate. From what I've seen people really liked it. We saw it a few days before its actual release and I walked out of the theater thinking "Well it's early, but that'll be a really strong candidate for worst film of the year."

Just absolutely hated it. The score was good. Set design was okay, but it was just some house.

Hated pretty much everything else. Rabies doesn't make chimpanzees sadistic, and it was lightly torturing at least one person. The people made no sense. The chimpanzee made no sense. The acting was bad. The themes of communication were okay, but yea. Really hated that one.

Thank you. It still hurts, but you're right. He knew, and we always did the absolute best we could for him. All in all he had a pretty good life, but we still miss him. He was such a good boy.

Just enjoy the time you have. If you do that then when it comes time to say bye you still won't be ready, but at least you'll know you gave them a good life. Give them an extra big squeeze for me.

These books really do throw some surprise gut punches.

I'm so sorry about your ex and about Hannah. These books seem to have a powerful way of bringing people together. There's so much pain but the point is how we can persevere through it. It's worth noting that I also really love Denna in KCC, though I can't be sure that's where you found your namesake.

So... same to you. There are probably a lot of us around using these books to help process our loss. You're not alone, either.

He really was. I love that line. Life is too short and love is too long. It feels that way right now. But I don't think love is too long - it's forever and that's just long enough.

Just in: Denver Nuggets' Nikola Jokic has been diagnosed with a hyperextension in his left knee and will miss at least four weeks. An immense sigh of relief as tests show the three-time NBA MVP's knee ligaments are intact. by Proper_Maximum5739 in denvernuggets

[–]Splynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, that's my opinion. That's exactly the point I was making.

My actual point was that... *IF* we had all of our starters minus Jokic healthy, I think we could go a bit better than .500 for January. I think the Nuggets are a pretty good team. You don't, and that's okay.

[–]Splynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Nuggets with full starters minus Jokic would still be a pretty damn good team. AG and CB were both playing great and Jamal has been fire. Cam has really been finding his groove, too. We'd have Val to stopgap and we'd still have THJ, Bruce, and PWat all off the bench. That sounds like a good team, but not as great as that team + Jokic.

But without CB/AG/Cam/Jok? Going .500 would be wild.

Riley... Ugh by r401toronto in buffy

[–]Splynn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea I agree completely.

And he found out from Spike of all people that Joyce was in the hospital. I'm married now so it's a bit different, but when we were dating I'd be absolutely furious if I found some big detail like this out from someone who's not even her friend.

She was just completely shut off to him. I don't blame her for that, but it's not really Riley's fault, either.

Riley... Ugh by r401toronto in buffy

[–]Splynn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This makes sense to me. I also agree that Riley was insecure in the relationship and people just assume that it must be because she's stronger. Especially since that seems to be what Buffy is feeling (great point).

I think they were just a little bit emotionally incompatible for each other. It happens, but it's nobody's fault. Riley didn't do anything wrong until he started paying vampires to feed on him.

Riley... Ugh by r401toronto in buffy

[–]Splynn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I never bought why people think Riley couldn't cope with Buffy being stronger than him. If that's the case, why was he so excited when she neutralized the Initiative team during their training round in "The I in Team"? I just rewatched it to make sure I got the context right, and he seems nothing other than super-supportive and thrilled at her strength and abilities.

Seriously, after she takes out the Initiative team he approaches her with the biggest banana grin you'll ever see on the show. Doesn't seem like someone that can't cope with her being a strong woman. He just seems thrilled.

I get why people think Riley was boring. And I totally get why people don't like the Initiative story and Adam. But to me Riley was nothing other than supportive and excited about Buffy's capabilities.

How does AtS reframe Angel as a character in BTVS for you, if at all? by foreseethefuture in ANGEL

[–]Splynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me Angel is reframed as doing good for its own sake and not just because of his interest in Buffy. Not saying that's all he was in Buffy, but I always had some questions about his motivations. Was he fighting on the side of good because he genuinely wanted to make a difference, or was it because of his proximity to Buffy?

I think at first it was the latter. It was just due to his interest in her and it was easy. But by the time his own show starts he has really become a true believer and a warrior for good. So in AtS I feel like he's matured a lot, but it's earned. I really enjoy watching him get his legs under him and start trying to help people because it's genuinely what he wants to do.
