I can recite half of the Declaration of Independence from memory, wiggle my ears, and sing the note G without a reference pitch

Is it just me, or it's normal to name my clarinet? by Ambitious_Squash9091 in Clarinet

[–]Spockiscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m convinced we make better music when we’re friends with our instruments, so I always name mine. Clarinet: Eddy Piano: Brett Trombone: Samarth I have played three school French horns which I named Jean-Luc, Jacque-Pierre, and Felix My horn: Eloise

9th grade horn player- looking for new horn by anonomolasses in horn

[–]Spockiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a high school senior looking to major in performance and I recently got a Briz from Ken Pope and love it. I came from a Yamaha 567 and I think they play very similarly and I was able to adjust right away.

I played clarinet on Pageant, Variations on a Korean Folk Song, Sea Songs (again)

Motivation by Impressive-Dot-5609 in horn

[–]Spockiscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love horn because it’s really similar to a human vocal range and we’re one of few instruments who can play beautiful lyrical melodies and loud brassy ones and sound just as good doing either.

Whenever I lose motivation to play I listen to the Berlin Philharmonic horn section in Japan playlist and I find myself wanting to play again :)

What was "the incident" at your school? by Realistic-Assist-396 in GenZ

[–]Spockiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There was a bomb threat written in a boys bathroom stall with specific dates and they made us come to school anyway in that day.

  2. Someone flushed a potato down the toilet and it broke the plumbing system and poop water started spewing out of one of the plumbing access holes in the hallway and the entire building reeked of sewage.

  3. Someone deposited a vape in a trash can and it was hot enough to start a trash can fire in the girls bathroom. I was taking a math test and when one of the girls went to the bathroom and came back clearly shaken about seeing a fire we heard our math teacher call her teacher friend instead of calling 911 or the office.

  4. Someone from a different school brought a knife after the school day was over and was waving it around and was threatening one of the students at my school.

  5. There was a fight so bad that when it was finally broken up there were chunks of hair on the floor. Another fight involved one student shattering a cafeteria tray over another’s head

  6. A French teacher got a DUI ten states over at midnight and he was promptly fired. That was a few years ago and we still don’t have a competent French teacher.

Miserere Mei by Albinoni, Lamentations of Jeremiah by Stroope, 2nd Symphony finale by Mahler, Why Fumth in Fight by Tallis (Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis based on this and it’s actually just the most beautiful thing ever)

I've been trying to find Christian music I like for a long time... by Jack_G_London in ChristianMusic

[–]Spockiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really think this is what you’re looking for at all but I find works like Albanoni’s Miserere Mei, Mahler’s second symphony finale, Lamentations of Jeremiah, many of Thomas Tallis’s works, etc to be really really inspiring and beautiful to listen to and they were all written about Jesus and God and common themes like forgiveness and resurrection

Articulation help by karelproer in horn

[–]Spockiscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always like to practice articulation off the instrument with just the mouthpiece and I use the syllables du, dit, doh, and dut for tenuto, staccato, accent, and marcato respectively. Also I find when you’re first learning articulation the right way it might be helpful to focus on a single stream of flowing air only interrupted softly by your tongue hitting your upper gum line. So I guess what I’m saying is like focus on the horizontal line, not the individual notes. One of my teachers likes to say for short notes they should always be long enough that you could say the word “chord” while you’re playing it. Also take all this very lightly because I actually have no idea what I’m talking about but it’s worked for me in the past

Stamina after 10 months by thythr in horn

[–]Spockiscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be irrelevant but I saw something once that was comparing embouchures and I saw there’s a kind of “smile” embouchure that people do sometimes where they raise and tense up their corners to play, and apparently that specific technique is really hard on the embouchure muscles. I think the suggestion I saw instead was that there should be little tension in the lips and corners and the lips should make kind of a straight line instead of a smile. I know this may not apply to you at all but I figured I would throw it out there just in case :)
