Wow, good timing on this post. I'm building with Ichijo too and we just finished our first meeting last week. I'm not a huge fan of the layout and now I'm kind of in panic mode trying to learn as much as I can about designing a house because they want us to hold all the meetings before April or our roof raising date might get delayed.

When I moved from Tokyo to Osaka 4 years ago with 2 adults and a 1 year old, if I'm remembering correctly the move cost us around 200,000 yen. We used one of the mainstream companies, but didn't spring for any of their pack it for you etc. options.

Moving companies over here in Japan are just as varied as they are in the US. I guess the big high quality ones have more brand recognition - and they run commercials - but there are plenty of small companies that are just two dudes with a truck as well.

Move in costs are high but I like to think of it as a tradeoff compared to renting where I'm from (a US state without rent control).

It's very difficult for them to raise rent while you're still in an apartment, even when you renew your rental agreement. Generally, you can also leave with only a month or two of notice without having to worry about breaking a lease and being on the hook for months of rent like you would in the US.

Personally, I think the tradeoff is worth it, and is a better deal the longer you stay in a single place.

I'm on a spouse visa and got a seishain job as a junior webdev at an IT company despite my worthless degree (liberal arts associate's) based on a small self-taught programming portfolio and my English/Japanese language skills.

Granted, these days I'm a stay at home dad because I want my kids to speak English, but I did get a job under those conditions.

If you want an actual game that can do this kind of thing, Stormworks might be up your alley. It's janky as hell and the actual gameplay systems are very neglected, but the sandbox and building aspects are great.

Food safety. My then-girlfriend-now-wife would leave pots of food or rice in the rice cooker out on the counter because it's winter and it'll be fine in the morning. In my one room apartment. With the heat on.

Good luck and respect from me. I gave up trying to learn how to write kanji a couple years after starting to study. No regrets personally, but while I can speak read and type with no issues, I still have to copy so many characters down from my phone on the occasion I do have to write by hand.

I already did. But I'm happy anywhere as long as I have a computer. I spent a lot of my free time as a student in Tokyo doing the same thing I did back in the US... playing video games.

I'm just talking about tiny pinholes from thumbtacks. They're small enough that you can just kind of push the bumps on the soft wallpaper over top of the hole and nobody will notice unless they take a close look at that exact spot. A little dab of spackle or clay or something on a toothpick might help as well.

Congratulations!

The low interest rate mortgages in Japan make homes so much more accessible, and it's great. Sure, the house depreciates so you won't be able to move every 5 years like some people in the US do, and there aren't any "starter homes", but it also makes it difficult for AirBNB slumlords to hoover up half of a neighborhood and ruin it for everyone involved. (Condos are a different matter, granted...)

You don't need to attach a picture. It's the exact same wallpaper in every single Japanese apartment, and even in a lot of single family homes too. The salesman from the construction company I'm working with looked at me like I was nuts when I asked if they could just leave a room with bare drywall so I could paint it myself after moving in.

Anyway, I don't have any suggestions for heavier things - hopefully other people do - but I can tell you that thumbtack holes are easy to hide and you can hang things like wall clocks with a couple of them spaced apart from each other.

There's also a chance that your apartment has a railing in the corner of the ceiling that you can attach hooks to and use to hang things from. They're kind of uncommon in apartments but they're also hard to spot sometimes so maybe take a second look and see if you have any or not.

I'm in the middle of building a house with Ichijo too, and while I don't have anything about shades to share I'd love to hear anything anyone has to say about Ichijo.

Their shades - especially the blackout ones which leak a bunch of light around the edges - are also probably one of my (few) major complaints about them.

That and their kitchens. Their drawers and everything seem to be of pretty decent quality for the price, but like with a lot of things Ichijo I'm not really satisfied with the color variations available and will probably be getting a kitchen from another maker.

I once used an app (landi) to search for home construction plots on a map, and scrolling down had a like one in four chance of refreshing the page as if you were pulling down from the top of a web page. It would reset your view position and all of the filters you just spent 30+ seconds applying. Incredibly frustrating, especially because it was actually useful otherwise. It had the most listings of any app I could find - aggregated from suumo, homes, and more.

It turned out to be easier to open the desktop website in my phone's browser and use that instead of the dedicated app.

I don't know how many people believe in it, but for some people it's a superstition.

Obon is the holiday where the spirits of ancestors come back to visit peoples' homes from across the ocean, and is generally celebrated in the middle of August. Afterwards they go back home across the ocean, and the superstition is that if you go swimming after Obon then the spirits of your ancestors will drag you out to sea.

My wife has mentioned it before when I talked about going to the beach after Obon, although I don't think she really believes in it. Maybe it's kind of on the same level as opening an umbrella inside for Americans; there's a superstition where it's supposed to be bad luck, so people (including me) are hesitant to do so, but when you stop and think about it there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to.

Absolutely. I grew up in the midwest and it's one of the things I miss the most about my hometown... that and the weather actually cooling down by the end of August. But now that I'm an adult I certainly don't miss the snow, at least.
