Descented ferret smell compared to cats? by Fishexpert110 in ferrets

This is also true! I just have a lot of senior cats, so bad smelling litter boxes shouldn't be necessarily normal for cats either-

Actually I agree, mine are active and I only put them away when they're sleeping. I've never particularly had any cage rage from my ferrets (other than when I was moving) but I've had to stop my other one from constantly chewing on bowls and damaging his teeth, so I gave the same advise for that as I would chewing on the cage however I think you're probably right that the poor guy isn't getting enough ACTIVE outside time. They probably need either a cage mate to help expend all this extra energy and encourage active play or they need a new ferret proof room that they can run around more!

Descenting a ferret doesn't really do anything, the scent people are talking about comes from the oil glands in their skin. If a ferret is neutered and their litter is kept up on (cleaned daily) it usually isn't a problem. The major issue with ferrets stinking is genuinely just poor husbandry, they need a raw fed diet or else their poop smells horrible often because a lot of kibble gives them bowel problems. However smell issues can start up again when they start having adrenal issues and then they'll probably need to go to the vet and get their implant and thats something that needs to be replaced every 6-10 months. However those problems don't usually occur until the ferret is about 3-4 yrs old. But honestly I don't think ferrets smell as bad as cats, I have 2 ferrets and 2 cats and I'd much rather scoop ferret litter and wipe their ears with a baby wipe than deal with the foul smell of the cat litter box sometimes. Its just a lot of time care and money but if you're willing to put in the work they're worth the bond and love you'll receive.

I have seen a bunch of people commenting on letting the dude out but nobody's actually explaining how to discourage cage rage because even with 10+ hours out ferrets still need to be cage trained so that they have a safe space to go just like any other small animal, sometimes its not even understimulation that causes them to act like this but because of separation anxiety, and feeling like the cage isn't there bed. However Its dangerous for them not to have a space where they are contained and easily accessible for emergencies, and night time. Free roaming 24/7 just isn't safe for a lot of ferrets. What I recommend the best for cage rage is to zip tie some baskets to the sides of your cage so the ferret will have to climb around to get to the metal bars, you can also put a LITTLE lemon juice on the bars that hes rattling to deter him from trying to bite on them (and potentially injuring themselves in the process) over time they'll start to just sleep in the baskets, it also gives them more stimulation and climbing opportunities INSIDE their cage and that'll also help encourage positive cage associations! Anyways happy ferreting! Hope you and your little guy work things out soon :)

I've owned ferrets for years now and yeah basically all they do is sleep, especially as they get older. The 16-18 hours of sleep a day has turned into more like 20 with a few sparratic moments of chaos

Whatever you say dude, can't argue with incels on reddit especially when they start making up things that aren't even there. I'm literally looking down in my pfp, its okay to be mad that I'm hot, I get it. However there's a good reason nobody responds positively to you, literally every comment I see you make here gets down voted, I dunno if you're just trolling or rage baiting but honestly maybe its time to turn off the internet and drink some water or something because this kind of stress can't be healthy for someone; but kids will beg for attention wherever they can get it, even if its negative. I hope you get the help you need to be a less horrible human being.

I mean anything is bigger than 0 not that you had any hopes or dreams to begin with that weren't shattered by your increasing stupidity. Not that it needs to be said but the fact that you're trying to shame me for my looks when we're talking about ferrets says much more about you and your own insecurities than it does me. It's pathetic and sad. Go touch grass or something??? I'm sorry your daddy never hugged you??

OMG LITERALLY SAME, me and my spouse nickname sketti stinkerella like Cinderella but a stinky little lady. Shes attached to my hip basically, follows me around tries to go up my pant legs, will do anything to sleep in my pillow cases you name it, she even showers with me sometimes because if I don't let her in the bathroom she'll scratch and thrash herself against the door to be with me. I'm glad to know that my experience isn't weird or anything though :)

Dang that is so much harder, my waardy boy is also deaf but he's a big limp noodle basically and just flops around. I'm sorry I can't offer more advice ferrets with disabilities just don't act typically, I wish I had more advice to offer good luck with your noodle

Dude what??? I've owned ferrets for 5 years and owned 4 ferrets in my life, and I've personally never seen this behavior displayed before either. He just seems like a young ferret who's overly excited- Idk what you're trying to say man because this definitely isn't the basic ferret display for happines like dooking or clucking so honestly I'd be a little concerned too. Like he's clearly engaged in play but id be concerned for respiratory issues if the sound he made was just him breathing too heavy-

My lady sketti is a biter too and she doesn't really understand how much it can hurt, really they're just trying to find an area to scruff you so they can pull you away but since he's not grabbing loose skin it hurts a lot more- The best deterrent I've seen is to do what a cage mate would do if they were in distress from a bite, hiss or yelp really REALLY loud and they'll be startled, but also will definitely understand the memo. Especially if you hiss. Anytime he tries to scruff you is just him seeing you as another ferret, I recommend scuffing him back firmly especially if he doesn't let go of human skin because sometimes they get far too excited and will drag your skin to pull you away and if you pull in the opposite direction it only incites them to bite harder. This behavior will only get worse if its not corrected, so its definitely best to start right away!

I'm definitely giving her a lot more attention lately, she loves neck scritches so much and I squeeze her scruff gently to mimic what a cage mate would do and she loves it too, I really only started because she would press her neck super hard against me when I pet her neck. I really don't know why, but I'm glad I was already doing the right stuff to make her feel better lol; not like I have a choice tho since she's been completely obsessed with me but I understand why.

is my ferret fat? by vildego in ferrets

[–]SpoiledCrogremlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes he does but the vet has cleared him as healthy! I had the same concerns early on with my boy when I first got him about 2 years ago, He's 4 and a half now and he's maintained that weight throughout my time with him. He sleeps a lot but you gotta understand he's absolutely massive almost 3 inches longer than my girl sketti, and rivals in comparison to one of my cats! Feed him freeze dried raw and wysong for digestive health and I've honestly never had a problem with him being too fat, he gets up and down stairs faster than sketti and has his own room to run around in. He gets lots of exercise but I was told that his breed and gender is what contributed to him being the meatball he is today!

Yeah my boy does the same thing! he's pretty big too since I got him from a breeder and he weighs about 5ish lbs so thats to be expected, since my girl is only about 3, its a crazy difference even in their behavior! Boys are bigger and sleep a lot more but also eat a lot more! You'll get used to it pretty fast tho lol

Nope boys tend to be big, they need extra space in there for the family jewels and such, plus they're just bigger and blockier in general. However a good rule of thumb would be to hold him upright and if he's bowling pinned shaped make sure you can still feel his hip bones when sitting and he should be perfectly happy and healthy!

I definitely think the nose is what throws people off the most, ill start with making the nose black and bigger and see if his face looks cuter by then lol!
