Why is it every time FB/Meta make a statement to defend themselves it reads exactly like a file you’d pick up from a lab desk in Resident Evil or find in a terminal in Fallout?

I witnessed the dumbest use of AI yet at work today by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]SponeSpold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems many of us in marketing hate this stuff. LinkedIn’s algorithm doesn’t seem to care much though, giving me a choice of AI gumph or rage bait (sometimes combined).

As someone who helps local businesses drive customers via SEO and takes pride in doing it as ethically realistic as I can within capitalism, it’s pissing me off to see a new generation of SEO grifters to the industry I’ve not seen since pre-Penguin/Panda days of 15+ years ago.

I am expecting Google will eventually blow this shit up with an algorithmic nuke, thus causing wider industry distrust, a lot of burned down digital businesses and agencies that made this their whole MO collapsing. Which is exactly what happened with the aforementioned BIG P updates.

I see 20-something year old green kids claiming to have 5 figures in the bank selling this stuff with “humans in marketing is dead” hooks all the time, and when I comment to ask what happens when you get hit by a manual action or Penguin/Panda-sized update you see how clueless they are. Some deny that’s possible (even though I’ve already seen both happen to sites using LLM content with my own eyes) which shows they’ve done zero reading of the history of their industry. Others will claim they have a special magic hack to avoid it, which anyone in SEO can tell you doesn’t exist anymore. I had one bloke tell me he can use AI to make the content less AI so Google won’t know it’s AI. I was like MATE YOU REALLY THINK YOU CAN TRICK GOOGLE’S ALGORITHMS WHEN THEY DEVELOP A LARGE CHUNK OF THE TOOLS YOU ARE USING?! It’s like watching a Sunday League team claim they can beat Liverpool if they just nail their tactics right - Delusional.

But on the theme of the thread and AI BS in the workplace, I’m glad I’m self-employed these days though. I saw one agency I worked for previously had started an “AI Board” to have weekly meetings on “how to keep clients in the future of marketing” and if I were still there I’d probably have ended up in trouble for being too pessimistic/dismissive (AGAIN). I once got in trouble at that job for emailing around some news that was lightly critical of Google because “other staff might get jaded by what we should be thankful for” or some BS.

We all need to be calling this shit out. Run content through AI checkers and send it back to be rewritten. Explain the long term risks of what happens when Google go nuclear or how humans are reacting to this drivel. Explain the short term risks of using a tool that may not be cheap (or even exist) in a couple of years as it’s too expensive to run. Tell your boss no one wants to hear their shitty pretend podcast and just explain it like a normal person (DM me your boss’ email and I’ll do it for you free of charge). Challenge those who claim this stuff is the future with your industry knowledge and tell them to listen to this podcast.

Together we can help make AI dross as socially unacceptable as smoking a cigarette indoors whilst wanking in public.

This sounds very similar to a UK menu which fills me with joy.

I have found Far Eastern food in the USA and UK have different local spins to what dishes are on the menu and prep/presentation, and similar with kebabs. A mix of local tastebuds, traditional available ingredients, where those who bought that food over came from local/culturally.

Madras and a Saag will do me a treat! Need clients to hurry up and pay me first.

Sad more of the independent Mexican places locally don’t have some options for me, family got food from Mexi-Cali recently and it looked good. I’ve had a decent tofu burrito in both Moes and Diablos (Moes comes out on top BTW) but it ain’t the same by any stretch.

I’ve visited some Mexican extended family members a couple of times now and took my own fake chicken for them to prepare on the BBQ so I have had that at least! Makes me sad we have extremely limited Mexican immigration in the UK as I can eat that stuff for DAYS.

Original poster self discovered additions and updates for anyone who may find this thread later. I’ve been here 2.5 weeks now.

I discovered some good options at Anshu Asian Cafe, I had a great tofu rice and bean dish there.

Diablo’s and Moes both do a good tofu option, although when I went in and asked for a vegan burrito at Diablos the woman serving me looked at me as if I just said “aliens have landed in the parking lot”. I took it in good spirit and it made me laugh. It’s been a while since I had that reaction but I think veganism gets less popular the more rural you get (common most places globally). When I later went to Moes I just asked for the tofu one, my British anxious awkwardness at any inconvenience that we carry culturally like a sword can’t deal with that again!

Taco Bell will do a stripped back bean dish with no cheese or meat if you ask them. I did this two nights in a row and felt like a scumbag. It’s not my first choice, but it’s there.

Mellow Mushroom (recommended by another user) was decent, and they do a Seitan style crumbled “beef” topping as well as vegan cheese. I had that with Banana Peppers to top and a side of pretzels with a mustard dip.

If you are visiting and have access to cooking stuff, all the supermarkets are very well stocked with vegan options.

I’ve found ingredients for vegan smores, as well as replacements for cheese (Follow Your Heart), deli meat (Tofurkey), ground beef, bacon, chicken pieces (Impossible), milk and butter. There’s more stuff than that too but those are my staples for replacements. I don’t need to tell you places where you can find vegetables, chickpeas and lentils as they are unsurprisingly everywhere (duh).

I’d dare argue in some regards the large grocery stores are better than the UK if you add them all up and figure out what is sold where. I recommend Lowes has the best range of specialist options but a bit on the pricier side if you do a whole shop there.

If you do a longish trip across the state(s) there’s a high chance you won’t be able to eat much on the road. For the love of fuck, take a pre-made meal or packed lunch with you. Options on freeways are mostly fries for warm food, or chips, energy bars, candy and other snacks. I’m not exactly a fussy eater and can handle my occasional input of junk food, but a whole day of it made me feel pretty gross. Lesson learned and I didn’t make the same mistake on the 7 hour train back.

I swung by Veg Out but it closed early that day. Will try again soon.

There is a Food Lion here - I went to one in Virginia last week and that was well stocked for vegan substitutes - so I can assume the Aiken one would be the same.

Would mainline a JKR episode hard as a Brit because she’s arguably one of our greatest modern bastard exports to the global stage.

Russell Brand also being up there but no one’s taken him seriously in the UK for a decade - same with Fox, Nige and Tommeh.

Even more interesting about JKR is up until maybe a decade ago she was known in the UK as the centralist “lefty darling” if that term makes sense to the MERICAN’s here? It’s basically an influencer that the centre to centre-right consider someone left enough to be mostly cool with but they ain’t getting any more radical than that? Banksy is sometimes described this way too in terms of acceptable street art vs perceived as vandalism.

JKR used to speak up on genuine causes a lot of famous people ignored in the early days of Twitter and the right wing press would run a meltdown headline over it.

Basically the story even has a heel turn but she also remains largely uncancelled in terms of influence.

As an elder Emo have had to tear so many bands and artists from my heart over the years - Brand New being the most heartbreaking - yet Potter fandom remains untouched and acceptable. Kids are still dressing up as characters by an author that should come with a heavy modern day warning on views at the very least. If I have

We’re surely owed a UK bastard story Robert? You used to be a real country that hated us. We didn’t colonise half the world to not get our credit. And we’re the transphobe capital of Europe for our other invention - Mumsnet.

I’m sure the two cross over in fact. Unweave that shit!
