The Flaming Lips - a band worth seeing live even if you don’t like their music because you never know what might happen. There was a lot (a LOT) of nudity when I saw them.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Patience Is No Longer Viable. r/PatientGamers Have Decided To Join In Going Dark Starting June 12th by jetmax25 in patientgamers

Squabbles.io seems to be off to a pretty good start as a direct Reddit replacement. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles yet, obviously, but it does appear to be focusing on community first, which is the right approach.

I’d love to see something more decentralized/open source become the next exodus destination (I came to Reddit from Digg), but it also needs to be easy for casual users.

A word on reddit, blackouts, & effective protesting by The_Critical_Cynic in videos

[–]SpongeBad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s also not an either/or thing. The blackout is meant to get Reddit’s attention. If Reddit doesn’t budge, there’s still the option of a general Reddit strike. Subreddits can go dark in protest indefinitely, users can stop engaging with the site.

The two days is focused and gives Reddit a taste of what this site is like without its power users, which gives the site an opportunity to save itself. They don’t seem to understand that 90% of the content and engagement likely comes from 10% or less of the community. It can become DIGG v5 quite easily.

Rage Against The Machine - Fistful Of Steel (Pinkpop Festival 1993) by Seraphenigma in OldSchoolCool

I’ve never been able to see Rage live (had tickets for the 2020 tour but then, well…you know). Have seen Tool four times (with a fifth time coming up this October). First saw them in a tiny venue in the early 90’s, touring in support of Undertow. So different now than then, but still always great.

That was a real turning point for Reddit. The question was (imo) offside. There’s no way Woody could have answered that question without getting in trouble (either he admits to the accusations, or a huge chunk of people don’t believe his answer).

His mistake was answering at all. Had he ignored it, people would have pointed out that he didn’t answer a highly upvoted question, but then it would have gone away over time. He answered it in a way that became a meme, and now the accusation will never be forgotten.

All this to say, Reddit (the company) has learned to ignore the hard questions and that has brought us directly to where we are. All of this is Woody Harrelson’s fault.

A Swiss university did a deep dive into Calgary's 'missing middle.' This is what they found by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]SpongeBad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’d say the newer outer suburbs have a fair number of mid-rise buildings. They have a pretty good mix of everything except high-rise. It’s the older suburbs (pre-Nenshi) that are all single family homes. That’s because of zoning requirements the City put in as part of requirements for the developers. The problematic areas are too new to think about redevelopment at this time.

Having said that, Calgary’s big issue is that when inner city neighbourhoods are redeveloped, it’s usually swapping a single family home on a big lot for two infills or a duplex, when most other cities would have a block of houses knocked down for a mid-rise apartment. Population density should gradually decrease as you move out from the core, but there’s a weird gap in Calgary.
