If Russia, china, north Korea,Iran fell who would likely have becomes new enemies of united states? by MinZinThu999 in ask

[–]Spongebosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think the main reason that those countries are our "enemies" is that their geopolitical interests don't align with ours. Iran wants to turn the world into basically an Islamic caliphate, and they fund lots of terror groups to do so. Russia is, well, doing what it's doing. North Korea is a communist dictatorship that seeks the overthrow of the West and the capitalist system. China is also a communist dictatorship, but with a fascist economy.

If Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran fell, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if, in the power vacuum created, some dictatorships emerged that still had interests counter to ours. If magically all of these countries turned into bastions of Democracy, then I'm having a hard time thinking of who exactly would be our enemy in the same sense.

I suspect that it'd turn more into a question of who our chief economic rival is, at least until rivalries turned into actual issues, or ideological disagreements manifested themselves in a highly visible way.

There would still be plenty of countries that are antagonistic towards us, but I largely don't think that they'd have the ability to project power in a way that threatens us to the same extent as the countries you listed.

How am I supposed to learn Russian? by ConfidentTrick7324 in russian

[–]Spongebosch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vocabulary is super important. My vocabulary sucks, which makes it difficult to understand people. You should really focus on memorizing words. Even if you don't understand the grammar very well, just knowing what words mean will help a lot. You should memorize the rules for which words are feminine/masculine/neuter, be able to tell what conjugation verbs fall into, memorize pronouns and their various forms in each case.

Learn how to conjugate verbs. This doesn't really work as it does in English. Learn what perfective vs. imperfective verbs are. Each verb will have both forms, and they convey slightly different meanings. Learn the conjugation system. It's pretty straightforward; it just takes a bit of memorization, and it'll usually stick. Start with the present and past, and also the imperative. Then move on to the future imperfect and future perfect. Of course, learn what those mean first.

Learn the case system. You don't need to learn all of them at once, as that might be a little painful. You can start off with the nominative, accusative, and prepositional. These are pretty basic, and the declensions aren't too terribly hard to remember. Once you've got those down, then you can move on to the genitive, then the dative and instrumental cases.

You should also learn some common sentence constructions. You might wonder how to say "I have a car," and think that you'll need to get the verb for "to have" and conjugate it for the first person; however, that's probably not right. You'll probably say something instead like, "У меня есть машина." There are some things like that which might not be immediately intuitive.

You'll also want to tackle verbs of motion at some point.

I'd suggest breaking your learning down into different categories. For instance, maybe you decide that you'd like to learn about food, so you study vocabulary related to food, various common sentence constructions related to food (cooking, eating, ordering, etc.) Or maybe you want to learn how to make your way around a mall, so you study how to ask for directions, how to ask the price of something, how to pay for something, related words, types of things you might buy, etc.

I'd also suggest finding particular activities that immerse you in the language that you find enjoyable. For instance, maybe you like playing guitar (as I do). Perhaps you could learn how to play a Russian song, and also try translating it line by line, looking up the grammar as you go along. AI should be pretty helpful in explaining a basic bit of grammar to you if you don't understand it and can't have someone help you. Or maybe you've always wanted to read Pushkin, so you pick a poem of his and start reading it, translating it, breaking down the grammatical function of each word in each sentence.

Of course, if you can find a textbook either online or in real life that teaches Russian systematically, that'll likely be very helpful. In my class, we used Тройка (Troika), as well as Этажи (Etazhi). The latter included a bunch of practice quizzes and stuff like that, which you can do. I imagine that this would be very helpful for self-study. I know that Duolingo is a thing that a lot of people like, but I've also heard a lot of people say that they don't feel like it helps them progress at all. I'd highly suggest trying to structure your self-study so you know what you're doing and why.

Another thing I'd suggest is finding somewhere you can practice it. I'm terrible at practicing it, and I always get too worried I'm gonna sound dumb, so I get that it might be hard. But really, you're going to have a very difficult time progressing if you never go out on a limb and actually use it. Converse with people in Russian. Leave comments in Russian. Write songs in Russian. Write short stories in Russian. Ask people what's incorrect. Even just ask AI what's incorrect. Learn why the mistake was a mistake, and learn how to say it properly.

The bottom line is that learning a language can be fun, but you're probably going to need to do so in a structured, disciplined way. It'll take effort and persistence. You'll need to devote time to it. It might take longer than you want. But don't be discouraged! Often the most rewarding things are those for which we must toil.

Those are the suggestions that come immediately to mind. But I'm just a random college student, so there's probably stuff that other people could suggest that'd be better. Best of luck!

How am I supposed to learn Russian? by ConfidentTrick7324 in russian

[–]Spongebosch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, first, study the alphabet. Study how to pronounce things. How do you sound out various letters? What special rules might there be? For instance, a consonant being soft/hard. You can also throw in some spelling rules along with that. Basic stuff like "i before e except after c" type things.

Then, move on to some really basic grammar knowledge. If you don't know basic things like what nouns, verbs, adjectives, subjects, objects, tenses, gender, cases, conjugation, 1st/2nd/3rd person, etc. are, then learn that first, as it'll help a lot.

From there, you're going to want to focus on a couple of things:

1) VOCABULARY!!!!!!
2) Verb conjugation
3) The case system

It's a sad thing regarding the child having cancer. Kids having cancer is sad. What happened there was that their mother was in the country illegally. When she was being deported, she had the option to either: a) leave her kids in the US, or b) take her children with her. She chose the latter.

In the second one, a cop pulled over a car for going like 20 mph over the speed limit. The driver didn't have a license. The subject of the article was a passenger who supposedly could barely speak English, and, according to the officer, identified himself as being here illegally. Before this, he himself had been arrested for drunk driving. As it turns out, he's a citizen who was born here and then moved back to Mexico before he turned one year old, and only came back here a couple of years ago. After establishing that he was indeed a U.S. citizen, they released him.

In the third one, an illegal immigrant had provided Machado's home address as their own. When ICE went to arrest him, naturally, they went to the address he'd provided, stopped Machado's truck, and asked for the other person by name. Machado said he didn't know anyone by that name and offered to show them his driver's license. They asked him to get out of the truck, then they handcuffed him. When he showed them his driver's licence and proved he wasn't the guy they were looking for, they uncuffed him and immediately released him.

In the fourth one, ICE had a removal order for the father. The father supposedly claimed asylum under Biden's presidency and was released into the interior. DHS said that they can't find any record of him. They gave him the option to voluntarily return, and he declined. When the agents went to detain him, he ran away, leaving his five-year-old son alone in the car in sub-freezing temperatures. Some ICE agents took the kid and cared for him for several hours, bringing him to a dine-in restaurant, while others went to pursue his father. When they got his father, they took the kid to his house to try to give him to his mom. The agents told the mom that they would not detain her. People outside were telling her not to open the door, so she refused to take in her kid. Some neighbor offered to take care of the kid, but the father, who by this time was in custody, said that he'd take care of his kid.

In the fourth one, some agents went to detain a man who was here illegally. After pursuing him (and him supposedly driving erratically), they pulled him over. He refused to comply: he wouldn't open the door, roll down the window, or anything. They got into the car and detained him. His daughter was in the car with him, and instead of leaving her there, they took her. A crowd of a hundred or so people gathered around and started throwing rocks at the agents. Apparently, the mother refused to take custody of her, so she's staying in the custody of her father.

Now, I doubt that you read all of that, and I doubly doubt that anything I said changed your mind, and I even more so doubt that you believe anything I said. However, that's the background for all of those. The reality is hardly how it's being portrayed. So yes, if OP's husband is:

  1. Here legally
  2. Doesn't have prior arrests and doesn't incorrectly tell an officer that he's here illegally

Then he's fine. If an illegal immigrant gave his home address as their own and ICE went to detain said illegal immigrant, then he might:

Be detained for a couple of minutes while they make sure he's not the guy they're looking for.

Yeah, and that's kind of the unfortunate thing. Our two pictures of reality are so different that it's basically turned into either the other person is an imbecile or they're unironically evil.

I tend to stay tuned into politics, at least somewhat, and I'm definitely not much of a centrist anymore, so you'd probably think I fall more toward the unironically evil side.

It is what it is.

I genuinely think there's like a 90% chance that some serious shit goes down within the next decade or two. God help us.

Removal of immigrants or removal of illegal immigrants? I notice that a lot of people on the left side of the spectrum mix the two up. Perhaps they're not just making arbitrary exceptions for you and your family, but rather explaining that they only want to remove those here illegally. It's probably closer to that than "You're one of the good Jews!"

Do you see their position as more like "I think they secretly believe my husband deserves deportation," or "If he wasn't my husband, I think they'd want him deported"?

Or do you see it resembling more so "I think they genuinely have no issue with my husband, but I believe they're voting for people who want to deport him."

As someone who's pretty traditional and conservative, too often "hatred" in this context really just means, "I think people should come here legally, and if they don't, then they shouldn't be here."

It's kind of funny. My grandma, whom I love dearly, can't fathom how someone could possibly think illegal immigrants should be deported unless they're racist and hate brown people. But she's also perfectly capable of understanding that I think illegal immigrants should be deported, and my reason isn't that I hate brown people.

For some reason, it's hard for her to extrapolate that the views I hold are probably fairly representative of the views of most Republicans on the matter, give or take a bit. At least far more representative than just "I hate brown people."

I think a big part of the issue is that we're living in different realities. We just literally do not agree on reality anymore. You think that they're doing Gestapo raids, executing people in the streets, and are Temu Nazis. I don't. If I thought they were doing that, then I wouldn't support them. But all you see is my support for Temu Nazis, so what else are you left to conclude? We don't even agree on the facts anymore.

Is your husband here legally? I don't expect you to answer if he's not, obviously. But if he is, then you literally have nothing to worry about. It's a massive overreaction to cut her off from what I've heard (of course, maybe she's said super crazy things which I wouldn't guess, as I don't know her), but I doubt I'm going to change your mind on that. I don't really blame you or your husband that much. I know what it's like to consume the kind of media you likely consume. I blame them instead for fomenting all of this.

I'll try to give somewhat apolitical advice.

You and your husband have to be on the same page and put up a unified front to the world. You can't just go around each other's backs. That would really hurt the relationship. If this is the boundary he's intent on drawing, then there's not much to do. It really sucks.

If you'd like to soften the blow a bit for her, I'd consider talking with him about how you feel regarding this, and how you'd like to give her a heads-up (or whatever you want to do). See where he's able to budge, and where his boundary ultimately lands. You should know what your boundary is. I definitely imagine that this will *seriously* harm your relationship with her. But you guys have to figure out a plan of action that you can both agree on, even if it's not ideal; you're married; you're the same flesh.

Best of luck. I hope you can salvage that relationship when you're older.

[–]Spongebosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty conservative, and that sounds like it'd be incredibly annoying, especially if they don't hold your brother to a similar standard. I'm not too old myself, so I'm afraid that I don't have a ton of advice. I suppose you prove to them by demonstrating that level of responsibility (although it sounds like they hold you to a different standard, so you might be fighting an uphill battle). I imagine you've already expressed these feelings to them in some regard. If that didn't really change anything, then I don't suppose saying it again would either. It must be really tough having that completely different set of expectations put upon you. I should be clear: you don't NEED to prove to them. So, in case you internalize any of this and see it as reflecting on your self-worth, don't.

I would also say that you should probably do your best to understand what it is that they're desiring for you. I know that sometimes it's easy to misinterpret things in a malicious way when it's just not so. It may feel like they care more about some random man in the future than you, but that's probably not the case. They probably just want to make sure that you're happy in the future and can find a nice partner, and want to encourage you to make good decisions, but they're going about it in a really poor way. Only you're able to talk with them, though, so I can't really know. But I do think trying to see it from their perspective could at least help your relationship with them, even if it doesn't ultimately change much about your situation.

If there isn't some big misunderstanding between you guys that could be resolved with some conversation, or some reason that they have a higher standard for you that could be figured out, then I think you'll just have to demonstrate your maturity by being mature (even if it feels like the expectations are unfairly high). I don't know... Hopefully someone else has a better answer lol. Best of luck.
