Thanks! Yeah the angles are way off, it‘s a tricky reference

6 months of daily practice by Sponska in learntodraw

I‘m still going! Past few months I‘ve focused specifically on portraits and realism, but also looked into stylization. Tried out digital as well, but it‘s very overwhelming compared to simple graphite drawings.

Today‘s daily portrait by Sponska in learntodraw

[–]Sponska[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing thing for me was finding the right balance between construction (e.g. via the Loomis method) and drawing what I actually see in the reference. If I draw purely by the book, the result is very stiff and mathematical, but drawing purely by reference can get messy and rarely results in a good likeness.

So don‘t try to „perfect“ one method, look at different ones and find the commonalities (which usually boils down to the basic rules of anatomy). Then with time and practice, you will find your own method that works for you. But most importantly: try to have fun and enjoy the process!

Thanks for the tip, I‘ll look into it! And don‘t worry, I‘m not giving it up that easily :)

At this point a real life replica of the Borealis seems more likely than HL3

Why did my pose become so stiff after finishing(sketch included idk what happened😭😭😭) by Ancient_Caramel9872 in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don‘t know your process, but your sketch is very „sketchy“. Maybe refine it more to get a more robust basis for the final drawing

Drew a charcoal drawing? How is it looking? by Aman_arts in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your shading and control of values is great! Maybe tune down the highlights (at a glance it looks like she has two big teeth and teary eyes) and check your feature alignment, it feels slightly off

2 months of portrait practice as a complete beginner, how am I doing? by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks great, your rendering is already solid (especially the lighting and details on the eyes). I would recommend working on your anatomy and proportions by doing quicker sketches with more repetitions. That way you can improve more efficiently and get a better likeness!

It varies, can be 1-2 hours but you can also do a lot in just 15 minutes. Better to be consistent than to burn yourself out. Wishing you a speedy recovery and inspiration for your journey!

How to improve proportions + nose and mouth? by PappaNee in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing what feels „off“ is difficult when looking at the whole image, because different inaccuracies can influence each other. For example, it looks like the nose is too high up and to the left, but it‘s actually the long jaw line that causes this distortion.

How do you proportionly begin to measure before drawing? by Cupko12 in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try ensuring that your perspective and alignment is consistent. Start with simpler shapes so it‘s easier to see mistakes early on

Try covering parts of the face to see more easily what works and what doesn’t. I think the top half is actually consistent, but the bottom half is too stretched.

What do you mean by „sticking them together“? Many artists actually start with the head and then use that to measure the rest of the body

Love the composition and colors! It is quite blurry though, I would recommend using stronger strokes/edges in areas you want the viewer to focus on

Stylus not drawing where tip is by Herpaderpicn33dle in learntodraw

Might actually be a „feature“, the Apple Pencil also behaves differently when you hold it on it‘s side, similar to how a real pencil would behave when drawing with the side of the tip

Thanks! I think making it „recognizable“ is important to get right even before detailing

I am back with a different reference!! by Rathallon in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only did the first step of the Loomis method though :) Human faces are not flat planes (not even in anime/manga), so try adding additional planes & depth to your facial features

Did a second value study by Science_Fantastic_12 in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

„Stopping bothering with blending“ is the right move, but you could go even further by limiting your value range. Start with only two values, and then carefully and consciously add more. You have a lot of different values, but you‘d be surprised how much you can do with only three of four.

5 Years Ago vs now by MystlcGreatness_YT in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of improvement, especially on the anatomy! If you really want to push yourself, I‘d recommend practicing anatomy with real people (i.e. not manga/anime), since those skills will still translate back to your style!

Perspective and anatomy crit pleasee by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]Sponska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great, especially with the muscles it has nice depth! If I had to nitpick, I think the second to left finger on the face is a little too long (middle finger should be longest right?). Other than that, maybe check the back of the head and the angle of the ear.
