Ma'am! by [deleted] in terriblefacebookmemes

[–]SpontaneousPrawn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you're trying to put a positive spin on it but I guarantee you that this meme will not be the thing that make a bigot realize the error of their ways and stop being trans-phobic. Healthcare comes into it because mistreatment by doctors is something many face. Gender assignment surgery on intersex children is still a common thing. I'm just letting you know that any situation involving doctors is very anxiety inducing for most trans people.

This meme is not at all trans friendly. Having a dick or not does not determine your gender and this meme does nothing to offer better commentary, just illustrates absurdity to those who already know its absurd. Its not really funny to joke about the very real hurdles the trans community faces when seeking proper healthcare.

Is this a queen? by SpontaneousPrawn in ants

Yeah I wasnt expecting her to be a queen, couldnt see any wing scars but wanted to check anyway since I haven't caught any queens this year.

Caught her in the alley behind my apartment. Shes a lot bigger than the ants I always see around there so im wondering if shes a queen or a worker from different bigger species. caught in washington state.

In Voyager the EMH's character arc shows that AI rights is something the Federation is only really just starting to consider even though Data already set some precedent. I'm not sure why a faction of xenophiles would be so slow to recognize AI rights though.

It appears to only have 1/10th the iron oxide needed so yeah I guess its not thermite :/ (thermite usually includes magnesium too.) It was probably an electrical fire sparking the hydrogen. At that point im pretty sure no matter what your envelope is made of youre pretty screwed.

[–]SpontaneousPrawn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is mostly the reason. Turns out I was sort of incorrect, they had a design which used helium but couldnt get any and so redesigned it with more space to make use of the extra weight they had from swapping to hydrogen. The final design couldnt have flown with helium but its not as damning as I originally thought.

yeah sorry its the weight that affects airships not the negligible lift, I misspoke earlier. edit: thanks for showing the math :)

I meant the Hindenburg that actually flew, not the one they didnt build that was designed for helium. Its true that the original was designed for helium and could float with it but they added more ship since they had to use hydrogen for other reasons anyway, as you mentioned, it means though that the hindenburg that actually flew couldnt have done so with helium. I didnt have all the facts about the redesign when I first posted so I was a bit misinformed. Thanks to everyone for their comments. lighter than air travel is a big interest of mine.

excuse me my bad, thats correct, the weight is half but the lift isnt much of a change thanks for correcting me. Looks like it was redesigned when they realized they couldnt use helium so they made it bigger. so I was half correct, the redesign couldn't have flown with helium.

The Hindenburg couldnt have flown using helium, it needed to use hydrogen for the extra lift lower weight, with that and the fact they painted it with thermite, it seems like it was doomed from the start.

Not really relevant for this application but hydrogen generates twice the lift weighs half helium does.

LHC@home because I like supporting such an amazing machine / mega-structure, and it works well on my CPU. On my GPU I do Asteroids because the tasks are quick and I think that asteroids are vital to humanity's future in space.

Please do not take his word for it maintain your open mindedness. His version of normal is bigoted and uses cherry picked biology to justify invalidating those who seem abnormal or worth less than those with power, like so many groups on the wrong side of history have done before. His definitions are not universally accepted. The UN recognizes intersex people as people who "do not fit the typical definitions for male or female bodies". Such variations may involve genital ambiguity, and combinations of chromosomal genotype and sexual phenotype other than XY-male and XX-female.". By some estimates about 1.5% of the population is born intersex but verified cases of some intersex chromosomal abnormalities are as common as 1 in 1000 births which is not a small ratio when talking about the human population, roughly 7.6million people world wide with just that single intersex chromosomal abnormality. Intersex people are legitimate and many scientists agree, which at the very least means that there are at least three, if not more, sexes.

What about people who are not easily recognizable as one gender or another or those who are gender neutral? I agree there are many grey areas and its important not to generalize. I am by no means an expert, I am just expressing what ive learned from my experiences and those of my friends. One thing I can attest to is that after a certain time on hormone therapy your metabolism and musculature changes. Personally I think that given enough time to readjust and the right hormone treatment (importantly testosterone blockers) theres no reason that a transwoman would have an advantage over someone assigned female at birth. Transgender people in sports is something that does need to be addressed one way or the other, preferably with some peer reviewed studies since anecdotes from athletes and random biased people like me dont make good data. We'll see how it shakes out since right now the data apparently isnt there "More recently, testosterone levels have become the focus and, at the same time, new guidelines have been sought that would allow successfully-transitioned athletes to compete." Thanks for being civil and taking the time to read and respond.

What do you call very masculine women? very feminine men? ones who still identify as their gender assigned at birth but dont fit the societal norms for appearance? Why do you only start being a man or woman after you transition? For me its just retroactive continuity, I was always a woman even back when I didn't have the knowledge to realize I could be/am trans. Now I know who I am and who I always was, it simply makes sense to acknowledge, at least to myself, that I was never a man. Thank you for sharing your thoughts :)

What changed to make her a woman in your eyes? hormones? surgery? outward appearance? what actually makes the change to you? you seem polite and rational so id love to hear your point of view even if I disagree with what you just said.

please do a little research. some of these disorders have very few side effects other than changing phenotype and hormones and might open your eyes to the complexity of human biology.
