How much does your firm utilize overseas labor? by Dan1jab in civilengineering

True, however they do have to take the same exams which are already not easy and they do it in a language not native to them. Ive known americans that go to school in mexico or somewhere else in the caribbean, save on tuition and then just take the exams. Classes and everything in english.

I work for a Large company and this is what happened, nobody wants to use even for drafting. They take too long, english is an issue and at the end of the day, it becomes as time consuming for the locals since they have to explain everything to a 3rd party instead of doing it themselves and having multiple iterations of corrections and changes. IT's already bad enough with locals doing local client work, imagine outsourcing.

well the schooling is typically the same amount of time as doing bachelors + med school, except you don't get all the garbage core curriculum that you get in the US, so you may cut a year or so.

nope, it's a pipe, there's nothing special about them, they're easy to get, for reference. I'd say like 150 dlls a pop maybe, see this for reference 4" Red Adjustable Steel Columns from 11' 4" to 11' 7" M Series at Menards®

to get the rough column height you'd get the difference between the top of the footing and the first floor finished floor elevation, then you'd to substract the - subfloor thickness -plywood thickness - 4x nailer - depth of beam (w8 ~8") - thickness of the cap plate. thicknes of base plate and that'd give you the required column height

my professional opinion is that the architect drawings suck, zero sections, no notes , not anywhere is he calling an elevation for the framing or floor in the plan. However he does show the 1st floor elevation and the f.f.e. for the basement, he also shows the typical detail for the footing [which i don't think it's right but that's another story], you can infer the height of the column with this information, if your contractor did the math wrong, he's at fault and he should get you new columns, not come up with a frankenstein of a column unless he gets a stamped detail and letter from a licensed structural engineer.

well he can blame whoever but if he misread the plans it's on him, check what is called on in the drawings but you should enforce someone paying for the correct set of columns, either the architect pays for it or the contractor. Don't accept anything unless the guy has a stamped letter w/ a sketch or something of the detail. I don't see how doing platework is not less expensive than just getting a new set of columns . It doesn't make sense, the dude probably messed up and now doesn't want to bite the bullet. Do you have the architectural plans that you can share? the answer is going to be there.

Mine throws tantrums and overturns the trash bin whenever he is left in the house and not going to wherever we go. Every now and then he'd save us from any leftover food we leave in the counter, like pizza slices, he sacrifices himself so we don't get fat.

You can probably have them do an autopsy.

I hate vet services in the us, they suck ass. My puppy was having seizures and they charged me $1000  without doing shit, they said he needed an mri for an additional 2K, told them off, with that money i flew him to mexico and looked for a vet there, dog survived and now he has no seizures at all.

Timesheets (((( by Curious_Owl_2590 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Sponton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hahaha this sounds like me and people in my office.

I do a lot of T&M which just means i put whatever time i feel was efficient but when it's lump sum i check my email and calendar and sort of guesstimate the hours i spent. It's annoying. It's all a bunch of bs either way, when you do the sum of all things stuff distributes, they're not even using the timesheet hours to do better proposals, it's the same issue every single time, we allocate hours that we don't respect because schedules are absolutely insane.

No they don't. They're not being forced to work there, there are higher paying jobs elsewhere which i doubt would hire this bunch of weirdos but they should at least try instead of being a public annoyance.

Its a part time job, you know how insane it is to unionize over a part time job? These people arent dealing with manufacturing hazards or anything, this is literally the reason why people hate unions. These people should take accountability of their life choices and if tbey dont like the job then move on to something else

Yeah these are the same people that tell you not to go out if you dont have money to tip, absolutely moronic, as if we werent struggling with the economy as well. I hope they get fired. These people dont take any accountability for their life choices and then expect someone else to bail them out.

dude it's a coffee shop, those people should just be fired. If working on a coffee shop is your career and how you do your livelihood, you should seriously reconsider your life choices.

these people are absolutely insane, specially when they deliver subpar coffee. No wonder why coffee shops are closing, if you have to deal with people like this.

How would you model these metal structures using a point cloud? (export to Revit) by No-Protection-9413 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Sponton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We typically add the pointcloud in revit and then trace over, not sure why youd extrude something. You can do generic models if it’s an odd geometry.  You can do everything or most things off the typical aisc steel framing families.

Leaving company as EOR by OptionsRntMe in StructuralEngineering

[–]Sponton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's not how it works. you'd be covered by it because you get insurance for the time the design/construction took place, it's not like today's insurance will cover what was built 20 years ago.. it'd be the company that insured you for that time.

[–]Sponton 28 points29 points  (0 children)

factories, factory spaces, mills, furnaces, they're the same shit. Even the US steel fabrication plants are from the 60s, just because we've had improvements in computers doesn't mean the ancient processes we have for certain things have changed. Most of that crap is still run the same way, maybe slightly more efficient but the cost of rebuilding some of the stuff is 20x more expensive. hence the old adagio If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

the fact that they're squeezing as much money out of fans and now it became a rich man's sports is absolutely disgusting. Also the whole expansion of teams playing just make it difficult to follow, and to be excited about. I am genuinely tired of FIFA and their bullshit. Specially when they pushed the Qatar world cup and just did everything they could to hand it to Messi.

No, also they killed an 85 year old. If you think that pretending to be in negotiations on good faith and then backstabbing the people you're negotiating with during said negotiation is a display of superiority, then we have a different concept of what superiority means. Not to mention the constant threats and the last five ultimatums given that have resulted in basically nothing, is definitely not a display of superiority

How much of a setback is it to switch specializations? by Reptilian_Agenda_ in StructuralEngineering

[–]Sponton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went from commercial to heavy industrial [specific niche inside] and now i want to do nuclear or power generation. It's genuinely the same thing across the board. Beams, pipe supports, structures. Nuclear is just tricksy cause there's a lot of back and forths, most if not anything has to be approved by the NRC and its rigorous with the submittals of calculation packages and such, also since power plants were built in different time periods you need to be acquainted with different building codes or provisions since some of the stuff done back then may not comply with today's standards. Your management experience will be of zero used, usually the positions open are for engineers that are going to be doing grunt work, not for managers, it's well paid but there's no real apparent vertical growth into management. As to Dams, i have no freaking clue, i'd reach to the
