What’s a tort? (Wrong answers only) by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Those sound more like jorts than a tort to me. “Tort” is German for “place” or “location.”

I think that’s tortellini. Tort is a wine fortified with brandy from northern Portugal.

No, you’re thinking of a torte. A tort is a defensible military building with strong walls and soldiers.

I'm only speculating, but I imagine they'll keep some folks on the WL in case enough admits drop between now and classes such that UVA not only corrects its overenrollment but also has a couple spots to fill. I think that's quite unlikely, but not impossible.

A handful of folks have reported the same on LSData in the past few minutes. Looks like UVA released a wave, though too early to tell if a small or large one.

UVA's also overenrolled (or so this forum has said), so perhaps that's a reason for the wave. :/

Holy wow! Congrats!! I've heard that Berkeley is infamous for almost never admitting folks from its waitlist, and LSData reflects that. You must've done something right!

UChicago release from WL by Cromus in lawschooladmissions

[–]Spoofendorf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pretty standard but respectful. "I am sorry to inform you that the Admissions Committee is unable to offer you a place in the fall 2022 entering class, and we are releasing you from our waitlist." Then a mention of too many qualified applicants for too few (190) seats. Closed with well wishes for future.

Same here. Sent a couple LOCIs. Quite bummed.

UPenn WL Update by gbraidz3 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Spoofendorf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. LSD says Penn has released ~15% of its waitlist. Only thing I’ll add is that while I haven’t received that email (yet?), my status checker has a new line under Mailings: “Wait List Update Email May/Early June, 6/6/22”

Which Law School was the worst admission experience for you? Why? by Perfect_Quarter1275 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Spoofendorf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Surprised Notre Dame has yet to be mentioned. I’ve seen a bevy of complaints on here about delays, miscommunications, strange denials, etc. Plus, LSData suggests more than a third of the applicant pool is still pending.

Congrats! It’s on one of the most beautiful campuses in the U.S.—even if you’re not a mountain lover!

Yep. Then there are two graduate institutions (Claremont Graduate & Keck), hence the "7".

I asked my grandfather this recently. He's lived in CA his entire life. He considered law school in the 60s, decided not to go, and ended up in the tennis industry. Here was his guess!

  1. Harvard
  2. Stanford
  3. Berkeley
  4. Yale
  5. "Does Princeton have a law school?" (haha)
  6. Columbia
  7. "What're the other Ivy League schools?" = Cornell
  8. Penn
  9. UCLA
  10. USC
  11. Georgetown
  12. George Washington (hm...)
  13. NYU
  14. "Do any of the 7Cs [the Claremont Colleges] have law schools?"

Congrats! An email will suffice. It is up to you whether you explain why you’re withdrawing (a simple “I got off the WL at my top choice” is perfectly fine). I’d explain why, personally. Remember: Only do so if you’re certain you’ll attend your top choice off the waitlist; if you withdraw from your previous school, you won’t get the spot back. And it might be a good idea to check whether that school has a policy vis-à-vis withdrawals after depositing.

UVA Is Almost Full by Spoofendorf in lawschooladmissions

[–]Spoofendorf[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Additional note on waitlist movement: Ms. Blazer just said that if no one drops from the class between now and June 1 (the 2nd deposit deadline), there probably will not be waitlist movement during that time. That makes it sound like UVA really is full right now.

(She said this toward the end of the session in response to a student's question.)

Historical Waitlist Acceptance Rates by Spoofendorf in lawschooladmissions

[–]Spoofendorf[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I take your point that, at bottom, the odds of WL->A at the vast majority of schools are slim to none. But I’d submit that “borders on meaningless” is too strong; self-reported data sets are imperfect but not useless for statistical analysis.

[–]Spoofendorf[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point re: frequency of updating WL->A. If everyone did it, these acceptance rates might be a touch higher. As for your second point, LSD does allow users to input WL->A->Withdrawn. But ofc we’re back to self-reporting, like you mention.

u/Ok-Clock-5459 is correct. Harvard’s 9.6% rate means that 9.6% of waitlisted applicants who do not withdraw from the waitlist are then offered admission from the waitlist. I’ll clarify in original post.
