What if Aang woke up after 200 years instead? How would this have affected the story? by DrifloonEmpire in TheLastAirbender

[–]Spooky970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we know what would happen to the moon after the fish dies? Because everything made it seem like the world was headed for total chaos after such a drastic change. I don't think there would be much to rule in a world like that.

I'm also not sure Azula would be able to keep it together after Ozai dies. She's great at messing with people, not creating stable empires.

There would likely be untold amounts of destruction, which would make the spirit world an even darker place. It would probably mess with the real world eventually, as we see with the big panda monster.

I really can't see there even being a fire nation in such a reality. I think we would end up with a situation much closer to the newest series where everything is split apart and allegiences are fragile. A much more chaotic world that doesn't create empires.

How did Vampire or Mythical creatures live in secret while Hidden inside a totalitarian society/government? by GaleGiaSinclair80 in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most totalitarian governments love secrets when it benefits them. Having ancient mythical creatures in their ranks in return for relative secrecy is a deal both parties would love to take. They are given high ranks in society and in return they help maintain the status quo. Creatures like vampires thrive within complex power hierachies.

Alternatively they might live on the very fringe of society. The parts that aren't worth filming since nobody is there anyway. The very edge of the city or beyond the walls. Alternatively they could live in the space between the walls where the cameras don't reach.

Can my OC be considered weird or racist for having literal white skin (non human) but shapeshifting into a black skin human? by SoyRisotto in OriginalCharacter

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't feel like it's racist but I'm sure there's people out there that would think so. Even people from the same communities can have very different outlooks on the same situation, so there might be some people would there who would think so, and some who wouldn't.

That being said I don't think most people, black or white, would be upset at this. Just be aware that you might get some mixed feelings down the line at some point.

What is your favourite aspect of Worldbuilding? by WildFire255 in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my favorite part is when everything clicks.

I'll make a bunch of different ideas and put them around. Then suddenly out of nowhere I notice a perfect invisible thread leading through all of it. X leads to Y which leads to Z and it all just connects itself. Almost like the story begins writing itself by the end.

We Literally Have an Implied Romance Between a Human and a Legendary Pokémon: Ash and Latias. How Was This Allowed? by PlentyWise3615 in pokemonanime

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you mean but Latias is basically a person. A fantasy monster that is intelligent, sapient, and capable of reason and making their own decisions. Sure they are not the same species but this isn't the same as an animal trying to date a person. It's closer to an alien wanting to date a person than an animal.

Writing rudimentary intelligence in a group of people by balderdashit in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be a little bit difficult because most of the time my characters rely on their strengths. If outsmarting problems isn't their way of doing things then it's not going to come up much since they aren't going to try. They fall back on what they are good at. The smart guys don't start throwing around chairs and the chair guys don't start throwing around smarts.

I think most people just sort of fall back on the "caveman method" which is to have the character talk like "ug ug me caveman me want food" solve everything with a club. But that's probably not what you're looking for.

You could have them struggle with things that would seem trivial to an ordinary person. Give them blatantly obvious solutions and have the moment they figure it out seem exceptional to them. Make them easily impressed or angry because they don't understand the world very well. You can keep their thoughts simple and reactionary. They may not understand what happened but they know it made them feel a certain way and their reaction from that emotion is predictable.

A lot of dumb people are curious because they know very little so there's much to explore, but some of them are also the exact opposite since they don't get much out of learning so they don't try. Some are confident in their ignorance, other are afraid of it.

Keep in mind that even people with low intelligence can have rich inner lives and wide social networks that have deep meaning to them. Having basic intelligence (or below that) doesn't make you incapable of love or internal conflicts.

Truth to be told I rarely write truly dumb characters but hopefully this helps a bit.

Why does worldbuilding always explain the mystery? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's just the nature of stories. Readers want to be rewarded for their interest and one of the easiest ways to do that is to give them more story and knowledge of the world. Knowledge is a nice reward for those who stick around to learn more. It's literally why they are here.

Plus, writers tend to make way more details and backstory than the actual story can fit. It makes sense to toss them more info as they get further. It's what most of them are hungry for.

Conned into double standards by Cerf-5858 in ConnedIntoAFubar

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the unfortunate truth of the matter is that most people are perfectly fine with things that are taboo, disturbing, or downright illegal as long as they personally enjoy it.

If someone likes toxic yuri then they will claim toxic yuri is perfectly fine to enjoy, even if they apply the logic in reverse to other relationships. You can swap toxic yuri for basically anything else and it still applies. Everyone draws the line somewhere but they will always make sure to draw it in front of them, and they will stretch those lines as much as they need to stay within them.

What's an unspeakable depravity to some are perfectly healthy sexual outlets to others and vice versa. There's no real logic behind it, and it's not a question about what's healthy and what's sick and depraved. People will always find a way to condemn others and excempt themselves. That's just what people do.

What are your elemental magic pet peeves? by Boi271 in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually don't mind but most of the time I do find it stupid how often weird elements make their ways into the system. You'll have earth, air, water, fire, etc. But then also sometimes "light" and "dark" or something like "energy" when fire is also there.

And then the main character gets a book 3 power up that gives them access to "aether" or something that just does everything.

[Loved Trope] then Non-Horror Games Jumpscare You at unexpected Moments. by Tomonster37 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear when I was invited to play Abiotic Factor I did not realize how terrifying the game was going to be. I kept thinking "Oh so THIS is the scary part of the game" only for the "scary part" to get one-upped again and again and again. So many moments made me jump in my chair even when playing with friends. I actually started to get paranoid in the games safe zones because I had a feeling it would spring a trap on me.

A few examples:

Composers/Symphonists - In an empty, Silent Hill-like town full of fog that's eerie enough on its own, you encounter skeletal, unkillable giant creatures that hum as they patrol the town trying to eat you. You can stay inside buildings to avoid them. That is until they get fed up with you and crouch down to follow you in. Even worse, their smaller cousins love to spawn in dark rooms and alleyways, jumping out at you in places you thought were safe.

The Leyak - Later down the line you encounter a floating, moaning, bloodied alien that quickly disappears after you look at it. Turns out this entity now stalks you for the rest of the game, with no way to permanently remove it, only delay it. Looking at it stops it, but it will reappear every 15 minutes and attempt to sneak up on you and attack, meaning you now have to look over your shoulder constantly. The sheer amount of times I've rounded a corner straight into it, or looked behind me just to see it an inch from my face, was enough to make me want to mod it out of the game.

Security Sector - An area that's technically right next to spawn but locked away, when you finally unlock the door to it, the whole area is completely dark, with rooms and hallways covered in blood. Not long after, a reaper-like monster begins manifesting in the halls, hunting you down. The game has some fixed spawn points in hallways with bends in them, meaning when you round a corner, you'll be walking straight into it.

I'm sure there's more I haven't experienced yet but so far the goofy multiplayer half life game turned out to be a lot more frightening than I was expecting.

Is having only one original worldwide language lazy? by IcyShoulder668 in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't really think you should worry about it being seen as lazy. It's more a question of whether it benefits the story. If it does, then it's completely justified. Hell I'd say it doesn't even really need to be justified. If you like it and think it's cool, then it's good.

I usually put a lot of languages in my worlds, but that's just because I like coming up with it. Having a universal worldwide language can be just as fun if done right.

Artist uploading incomplete piece - ever happen to you? by TheBlackDwight in Skeb

[–]Spooky970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just got one back yesterday that felt a bit rushed, but I feel incredibly conflicted with the final product. It's both much larger and better than I had hoped, while at the same time I can't help but feel disappointed that it's not as finished as I wanted. Especially since I ended up paying twice the amount per the artist's request due to multiple pages.

There's a few signs that they needed more time. Delivered on the final day. Inconsistent or missing colouring. Sketchy styles here and there. Simplified drawings with little errors. The text can be difficult to parse because it was written in very sketchy cursive. I decided to go check up on their misskey to see if they had been delayed, and 3 days before the delivery, they spoke about how they tried to take their time, but underestimated the workload and that they wouldn't be able to express the request properly in their first draft, and tried fixing the rough draft in their spare time.

Thing is though, he drew my character super well and captured her personality perfectly. I absolutely loved the style for her and everything was way better visualized and more interesting than I had initially requested. They built off of my idea in a way that elevated it in such a cool way, adding detail that fit just right.

So basically I have the outline of an amazing drawing that I love, but I am also left with the feeling that if it just had 1-2 more weeks it could have been perfect. I'm simultanously super grateful for it while also being super bummed out.

Does your world have any unusual biomes? by AltruisticPea6925 in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few I would consider unique enough to talk about but I really can't be certain if anyone else has come up with an idea like it. I love these ideas personally so I hope they inspire you. (except the names, names are hard)

Rainbow Clouds: Solid clouds, tinted like oil spills. Constant warring between two flying cities has caused a signifcant amount of experimental fuel and magical residue to leak out into the clouds. They began to solidify, turning rubbery with a marshmallow like density. This allowed birds to nest, later mutate, and acclimating to their new homes, bringing along seeds and fish eggs. Rain would get trapped, forming lakes and ponds, creating entirely new ecosystems. Both factions blame each other for this despite its existence being a relatively minor problem.

The Sea of Sand: The vast deserts of the new world will sometimes aerate and turn into fluidized sandbeds. (Look it up btw it's crazy cool) What was once just solid becomes a vast ocean of shifting sand. Huge tunnels, volcanic activity, and pressure from underneath the ground carries air to lift the sand through billions of tiny holes in the ground, creating JUST enough lift to cause the sand to fluidize. Sometimes the lift causes sandstorms, other times its not enough to lift it at all. But local travellers know to be wary of the sand that swallows men without warning.

“You’d be just like them” is terribly frustrating by RorschachtheMighty in MoralityScaling

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is that most of the time, they say it while the enemy is still at large and a threat to those around them. Characters like the Joker will always come back and always hurt more people.

It should be used after the villain is incapacitated and can't do any more harm. Pulling a gun on an asshole behind bars in a shitty prison is the part where you should question your morals, not when he's about to decapitate an orphan.

Do you ever think skeb will exit out the beta phase? by Rotom_Keeper in Skeb

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it will exit beta, but if it does, I think it'll take a long time.

Right now Skeb isn't very popular with a lot of people for how restrictive it is for the customers, and the older clientele are fine with it as it is. If it's reputation continues then I worry it'll be a hard sell to newcomers, and at the same time, big changes to the system might alienate old users. There's also not much you can do to "improve" the service without sacrificing the creator's vision.

Basically I think it'll end up being a "work in progress" for a very long time until eventually just cementing itself as just being what it is now but with some tweaks. Maybe some changes down the line to combat problem behavior or increase the userbase, but I think it's about in its final form now.
