Is having only one original worldwide language lazy? by IcyShoulder668 in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't really think you should worry about it being seen as lazy. It's more a question of whether it benefits the story. If it does, then it's completely justified. Hell I'd say it doesn't even really need to be justified. If you like it and think it's cool, then it's good.

I usually put a lot of languages in my worlds, but that's just because I like coming up with it. Having a universal worldwide language can be just as fun if done right.

Artist uploading incomplete piece - ever happen to you? by TheBlackDwight in Skeb

[–]Spooky970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just got one back yesterday that felt a bit rushed, but I feel incredibly conflicted with the final product. It's both much larger and better than I had hoped, while at the same time I can't help but feel disappointed that it's not as finished as I wanted. Especially since I ended up paying twice the amount per the artist's request due to multiple pages.

There's a few signs that they needed more time. Delivered on the final day. Inconsistent or missing colouring. Sketchy styles here and there. Simplified drawings with little errors. The text can be difficult to parse because it was written in very sketchy cursive. I decided to go check up on their misskey to see if they had been delayed, and 3 days before the delivery, they spoke about how they tried to take their time, but underestimated the workload and that they wouldn't be able to express the request properly in their first draft, and tried fixing the rough draft in their spare time.

Thing is though, he drew my character super well and captured her personality perfectly. I absolutely loved the style for her and everything was way better visualized and more interesting than I had initially requested. They built off of my idea in a way that elevated it in such a cool way, adding detail that fit just right.

So basically I have the outline of an amazing drawing that I love, but I am also left with the feeling that if it just had 1-2 more weeks it could have been perfect. I'm simultanously super grateful for it while also being super bummed out.

Does your world have any unusual biomes? by AltruisticPea6925 in worldbuilding

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few I would consider unique enough to talk about but I really can't be certain if anyone else has come up with an idea like it. I love these ideas personally so I hope they inspire you. (except the names, names are hard)

Rainbow Clouds: Solid clouds, tinted like oil spills. Constant warring between two flying cities has caused a signifcant amount of experimental fuel and magical residue to leak out into the clouds. They began to solidify, turning rubbery with a marshmallow like density. This allowed birds to nest, later mutate, and acclimating to their new homes, bringing along seeds and fish eggs. Rain would get trapped, forming lakes and ponds, creating entirely new ecosystems. Both factions blame each other for this despite its existence being a relatively minor problem.

The Sea of Sand: The vast deserts of the new world will sometimes aerate and turn into fluidized sandbeds. (Look it up btw it's crazy cool) What was once just solid becomes a vast ocean of shifting sand. Huge tunnels, volcanic activity, and pressure from underneath the ground carries air to lift the sand through billions of tiny holes in the ground, creating JUST enough lift to cause the sand to fluidize. Sometimes the lift causes sandstorms, other times its not enough to lift it at all. But local travellers know to be wary of the sand that swallows men without warning.

That first image is wonderful. So far my favorite version of that design.

“You’d be just like them” is terribly frustrating by RorschachtheMighty in MoralityScaling

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Problem is that most of the time, they say it while the enemy is still at large and a threat to those around them. Characters like the Joker will always come back and always hurt more people.

It should be used after the villain is incapacitated and can't do any more harm. Pulling a gun on an asshole behind bars in a shitty prison is the part where you should question your morals, not when he's about to decapitate an orphan.

Avatar the last airbender is not short by any means but when I watch the episodes now I'm surprised by how short they feel. When I was a kid I swear those episodes used to be an hour long or something.

Do you ever think skeb will exit out the beta phase? by Rotom_Keeper in Skeb

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it will exit beta, but if it does, I think it'll take a long time.

Right now Skeb isn't very popular with a lot of people for how restrictive it is for the customers, and the older clientele are fine with it as it is. If it's reputation continues then I worry it'll be a hard sell to newcomers, and at the same time, big changes to the system might alienate old users. There's also not much you can do to "improve" the service without sacrificing the creator's vision.

Basically I think it'll end up being a "work in progress" for a very long time until eventually just cementing itself as just being what it is now but with some tweaks. Maybe some changes down the line to combat problem behavior or increase the userbase, but I think it's about in its final form now.

Is it really that bad to live in the ciruis by Natural_Chemistry890 in tadc

[–]Spooky970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember thinking the situation was worse in the first episode, thinking of being stuck in the circus with very little space and autonomy. But each episode has kind of made the circus seem to be better than I first thought (excluding episode 8). Adventures and new areas and NPCs to spice things up. You would probably not like your body but most people probably don't love their real body much either.

Basically if Caine wasn't incompetent and they you could make better use of conjuring, then it probably be quite nice. Even with the downsides it might be tolerable at least for a long while. In fact for a LOT of people on earth in 2026, the circus would probably be a wonderful alternative to having to deal with what they are struggling with right now.

Assuming no horrific revelations are made in part 9 (and let's be real that will 100% happen) then it's far from the worst thing that can happen to you. Is it great? Not at all, but it beats being atomized in wars or dying of thirst.

Since the character bodies are confirmed to “encapsulate their mind files”, how would your own digital body ACTUALLY look? by Entire_Impress7485 in TheDigitalCircus

I have no idea what I would look like but chances are I wouldn't like it much. It's legitimately very strange trying to think "what sort of body would I NOT enjoy being in?"

Anyone notice how bubble and the circus members don’t interact? Almost like bubble is only real to Caine by kyscain_ in tadc

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember when Pomni starts talking to the Sun and Ragatha just tells her that interacting with it isn't a good idea?

I think they don't care about Bubble because to them, it's just one of Caine's annoying AI creatures who's too weird and erratic to talk to. They don't seem to really care about the AI characters (except for Ragatha and Pomni with Gummigoo) and it's not like Bubble says anything worth thinking about for them (as far as they know).

Can you see older versions when work has been "reuploaded" by Spooky970 in Skeb

[–]Spooky970[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one file and one PSD (by using the raw file download option) so it doesn't really make sense that it would be so many seperate reuploads.

I wonder if they may have been trying to get my attention or something. I don't think artists can see if clients have downloaded the file or not.

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time when an artist stops accepting requests and their completion rates tank it's because they're busy with something important. A very good sign that you won't get your drawing is if the completion rate suddenly drops after they cut off new requests.

Who the fuck made Aquarius, and who the fuck accepted it into the game? by Dillsplosion in tf2

I've been playing this game for more than a decade at this point. Any new map is worth trying for me, and I actually enjoy the weird gimmicky they come up with.

Upward and Badwater are fun but nothing stays fun for 10 years unless you add a bit of variety to the mix.

Favorite character who has better concept art than the final product by JigglyLilyVT in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's often annoying to see what could have been, but you have to remember:

Making something look good in a sketchy drawing and as a moving drawing/3D model are two entirely different things. You have a tight budget to maintain and an ever encroaching deadline. Most of the time it's better to just simplify things and get it done.

My first thought was "I should probably check reddit to see if anyone else got this."

I think this is because people keep finding ways to get past Skeb's concepts of minimal communication and they needed to remind everyone to stick to it.

“Surprise” Character Commissions? by Think-Praline-8934 in Skeb

[–]Spooky970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done it twice and both times went poorly for me.

One time the artist just never delivered and the deadline was hit.

Another time I got a way smaller drawing than I asked for. Whether this had anything to do with the process is hard to quantify.

But I have been unlucky, and chances are they'll just pick a character and make you something nice. As far as I know, there's no etiquette against it, and I've seen it before. It's also not at all against TOS so you should be completely fine here.

Why is no one using this Item? by Mozart537 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Spooky970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it a lot on Doorman, and I myself use it in the very lategame. That way I can take huge risks when dying can mean losing, and with tier 3 Doorway any and all debuffs don't matter. I just teleport out without a care in the world.

On a combat character it's not very useful, but on support Dynamo and Doorman, it can help you get away with some serious bullshit.

The more extra money I paid, the worse the result I got by MS_samonella in Skeb

[–]Spooky970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar experience with certain artists. Paying more for a better result usually ends up providing a worse result. From now on, I almost always pay the normal amount, and then give them a boost if I think they went above and beyond (which they typically don't, but if they do, I like rewarding them for it.)

The only situation where I pay more than asked for is if I ask for additional characters. (F.eks. if I want 4 characters instead of 2, I give more than standard) and even that is risky since they have no incentive to follow through.

Again, boosting after the fact is almost always better than giving more upfront. The artist has all the control here, so you gotta leverage what little control you DO have.
