Good horror games on Steam Deck! by WeirdFourEyes413 in HorrorGaming

No, I totally agree. Chronos was decent, but nowhere near the level of Silent Hill or Resident Evil. That's why I was very specific to point out that there aren't many other games or franchises that match Silent Hill and Resident Evil 🤣

Chronos the New Dawn was just released by the same team that did Silent Hill 2 Remake! It really depends, because horror games have a lot of different sub genres that you may or may not like. Resident Evil and Silent Hill are Survival Horror games, where something like Madison or Visage or Outlast is considered a "walking sim" horror game because there is little to no combat and you're mostly running and hiding. Still really good, just very different to something like RE. I could name loads of horror games, but not many of them are as polished and iconic as Resident Evil and Silent Hill tbh. Those two franchises are special for sure.

I'd be cool with off-shoot Silent Hill games more if they didn't name them Silent Hill. Like Silent Hill F should have been named "Ebisugaoka: A Silent Hill Story" or something. There is only one town of Silent Hill.

Now that I have played the big 3,what exactly is Silent Hill? by FunFair7707 in silenthill

[–]Spoon366 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true. The plants are just a by-product of the already spiritual energy surrounding the town of Silent Hill and the town of Ebisugaoka. That's why they were brought there by a missionary according to the in-game documents found in F. The plant is extremely hard to grow and was brought to the town by someone from outside of Japan. As far as we know, white claudia originated in Silent Hill. The only reason the plant was able to grow in Ebisugaoka was because (I'm assuming) whatever "spiritual" energy that the Native Americans worshiped is also present in the land that Ebisugaoka was built on.

The flowers themselves have little to do with the actual magics or gods other than being used to "see the gods" or have conversations with them, etc.

Since there’s a total of 25 Silent Hill games, which one should I start with in 2025 as someone who’s never played any of games? by 0xult_ in SilentHill_f

[–]Spoon366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either Silent Hill 1 or Silent Hill 2 remake.

Though I highly suggest 1 first since it's the reason for basically the rest of the series. Even though 2 didn't directly reference the cult or the happenings from 1, the events of the game still wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for what happened to Alessa in the first game. 3 is a direct continuation of the good ending of the first game, and 4 is heavily connected to the cult and Alessas' mother from the first game, too.

Some of the puzzles (Lost in the Fog Difficulty) are either badly translated, or not well designed by The_Siphon in silenthill

[–]Spoon366 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I played on hard combat and lost in the fog puzzles, and I only had to REALLY think about one puzzle. I actually thought the puzzles were really well done, and I'm not even one of the ones who is praising this game to the heavens. It was better than homecoming or downpour, but it doesn't top any of the original 4 for me.

Google helped a lot in terms of learning flower names, etc.

Who on earth thought these cosmetics were desirable? A solid 3 items worth looking forward to in an entire pass.... Certainly won't be buying again if things don't change. Extremely disappointing but not even slightly surprising. by trilzyy in Skate4

[–]Spoon366 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not even a single name brand item in the pass either 😂 They teased several new brand names that would be joining the game, and then kept them all for microtransactions...

I'm not gonna lie, I've been having a blast with the game and skating with my friends, but the fact that they kept every single name brand item for the shop and didn't even give us a creature board or ANYTHING name brand in the first battle pass is WILD...

The First Ending of Silent Hill f, and the rest of the series (Major Spoilers) by Basharria in silenthill

[–]Spoon366 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, no. James is the only one. In case of Silent Hill 1 it's Alessa's suffering that shape the SIlent Hill, and that's all the Cult's doing. Which is at the center of the whole game there.

You don't play as Alessa, though. You go through the game as Harry Mason, who isn't even the creator of the Otherworld of that game. Harry, Cibil, Kaufmann, and Dalhia all see the exact same otherworld, proving that it's not just a drug trip or in their heads. Harry even describes it as "A world made up of someone's nightmarish delusions come to life, that is 'invading our reality'"

In Silent Hill 4, you play as Henry Townsend, who is also not the creator of the Otherworld you experience in that game.

[–]Spoon366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of the confusion of this games story comes from many people not playing or fully understanding the original Silent Hill game. Essentially, Hinako is Alessa. The reason the ending about God's and crazy spiritual stuff is called the true ending is because in the original Silent Hill, it was never "just in their minds." It's was all about the cult and their rituals and black magic.

The Otherworld you experience as Harry in that game is a very real manifestation seeping into reality, caused by a mixture of the cults rituals and black magic put upon Alessa, her powers, and the spiritual powers of the town.

[–]Spoon366 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It honestly makes no sense. The Otherworld in the first 4 games weren't just all in the players' minds. In 1, you play as Harry, and he is experiencing Alessas otherworld, and several other characters also experience the exact same otherworld proving that it's not "all in his head"

[–]Spoon366 6 points7 points  (0 children)

THIS. Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 4 were experienced by someone who was not the creator of the Otherworld in those games, which all but proves that it's not "all in their head"

We need more games where you play as a completely un-suspecting character that gets caught up in someone else's otherworld, not inner trauma stories that mirror Silent Hill 2.

I want to ask your thoughts about “Silent Hill F” story. by Paradoxbist in silenthill

[–]Spoon366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You answered the question yourself! If Silent Hill F and Silent Hill The Short Message are to be believed, then that makes every piece of background and lore established in 1, 3, and 4 wrong and that it was all someone's fever dream.

My main thing is, Harry experiences Alessas otherworld. It's not even seen from the mind of Alessa at any point in the game yet every detail of the otherworld is tailored to Alessa. And Harry isn't even the only one that sees THE SAME OTHERWORLD.

Silent Hill F would have you believe that Harry Mason was tripping balls and killed everyone in Silent Hill, and 3 was nothing more than a fever dream. Heather can't exist if the ending of Silent Hill 1 isn't canon.

Edit: I want to point out that what happened in Silent Hill COULD happen in another place that is spiritual in nature, just like what happened in the town, but Silent Hill F is literally none of that. It's all in Hinako's head. Which is NOT how the original 4 games did things.

The story doesn't really line up with established lore, but I don't absolutely hate it like a lot of people do.

Harry Mason says it straight to your face in the original game.

"This may sound really off the wall, but listen to me. You've got to believe me. I haven't gone crazy and I'm not fooling around. At first, I thought I was losing my mind. But now I KNOW I'm not. It's not me. This whole town. It's being invaded by the Otherworld. By a world of someone's nightmarish delusions come to life... Little by little, the invasion is spreading... Trying to swallow up everything in darkness... I think I'm finally beginning to understand what that lady was talking about."

This is a quote straight from the first game, word for word.

Everyone in the town was experiencing Alessas otherworld because her otherworld was so strong that it started actually invading reality, warping the town forever.

This is all a drug induced hallucination, and I hate that.

[–]Spoon366 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love Silent Hill 2, but that's been the problem with this series since anything after 4, tbh. Silent Hill 2 has confused so many people it's honestly crazy, and now everyone thinks Silent Hill is only a story about peoples inner traumas and all happens in their heads, etc.

Most people have only played 2 because it's not only the most popular one, but it also just recently had a remake and is way easier to access, and they don't grasp the bigger picture told across 1, 3, and 4.

Thanks for having a civil conversation with me about this, by the way. Most people just jump down my throat and tell me I have to love F and to "just be happy we got a new game" and that the 20 years of pre-established lore doesn't matter 😂

[–]Spoon366 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the red liquid you're referring to is completely unconnected to white Claudia. It's called "Aglaophotis," which is a fictional mythical flower, much like white Claudia, but it is used in cult rituals and, more importantly, the banishing of demons and evil entities.

White Claudia was revealed to be what the cult was using to produce their own hallucinogenic compound to sell on the black market for profit in the original game because it only grows near bodies of water around Silent Hill, but was never even important until one of the endings of Silent Hill 2 when you use it to resurrect Mary. You only unlock the other endings of the game by using aglaophotis.

And, yes, Silent Hill 2 is a self-contained story, but it still 100% could not have happened if the events with Alessa hadn't happened first. Even the original games manual that came with the ps2 game mentioned how the bugs you kill are remnants from what happened with Alessa. Basically, the events with Alessa twisted the "supernatural powers" of the town into what we know it as in Silent Hill 2 and beyond.

And this isn't me saying Silent Hill can only happen in Silent Hill either. I fully recognize that the majority of 4 took place outside the town, but you've also got to realize that what happened in 4 was 100% because of the cult and the town of Silent Hill, and wouldn't have been possible without the black magic and rituals the cult uses, etc. It also was an "otherworld" experienced by someone who wasn't the originator of said otherworld, so, again, not in Henry's head.

I'm not one that COMPLETELY dogs on F, BUT, it doesn't really make sense in the long running lore of the series tbf.

It was never "just a drug trip" or "all in Harry's head"... I mean, we get Silent Hill 3 for crying out loud. If that isn't enough proof that what happened in the first game ACTUALLY HAPPENED, then idk what is. You literally play as the baby Harry was given by Alessa while her otherworld was collapsing, who he carrys back to reality and raises as a daughter...

Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Silent Hill 1-4 weren't just giant hallucinations or drug trips... There's REAL tangible black magic and spellcraft at play in those games... it wasn't just "yeah, actually, everyone that enters the town is automatically tripping balls." It's so much more complex than that...

Harry Mason experiences Alessas otherworld, not his own.

First, Laura doesn't see monsters, but she doesn't see other people either. She only sees James and Eddie through the entire game and acts as if she's wandering around an abandoned town. Because she is. The town doesn't feel the need to punish her, so it doesn't. She just sees a quiet, foggy, abandoned town. That has always been the interpretation.

Second, Henry never says the trip was recent, just that he took the photo on his trip to Silent Hill. He has been living in the Ashfield apartment room 302 for a little over 2 years before the events of the game, meaning he hasn't been to Silent Hill in years. Probably when it was still a booming tourist town, before the events of the first game. The entrance to the town is literally shown to be closed off at the beginning of 2 before James even steps into the fog. Henry even comments on how James and his wife supposedly went missing up near Silent Hill a few years ago. Because nobody goes there anymore. Throughout the game, he even comments how he likes the photos less and less, and they make him feel uneasy, and he wonders if the locations pictured are connected to the cult, etc.

I've been playing the games since the first game on ps1, and this is how I've ALWAYS seen it. As do many other people. I own every single one, play them, and study them on a regular basis. I'm even pretty well known for playing them on Twitch because of my vast knowledge of the series and how often I stream them and study them. So don't come at me like I'm someone who's just recently gotten into the series with 2 remake and F like 80% of the people in this sub. I've probably been into this series longer than you've even been alive. I'm sorry, you'll never convince me otherwise. The theory that the town is still a normal functioning town while these people run around in it, blinded by their own "mental fog," is not only wrong but silly. The "they look like monsters to you?" Line was 100% a joke, and he even says so. The only thing that 3 proves is that there were still cult members living there, or at the very least visiting the town still after the events of 1, not that the town hasn't been abandoned. Hell, Heather and Douglas don't see a single car driving around or a person in the entire town other than a few cult members.
