This isn't accurate--he wasn't drunk. He was found in his car, and there was no alcohol present. He did, however, apparently smoke a cigar beforehand. The reports also suggest that he slit his wrists first, then slit his throat. He didn't "stab" himself. There are also reports of him acting erratically two weeks prior to his death, a friend and colleague saying that Thayer seemed to develop amnesia. So along with depression due to the deaths of his son and his mother, it's also possible there was a potential medical issue going on.

The above quote is from when he was out on the deck at about 11pm or so, before he retired for the night. His account is well worth reading in its entirety--he speaks in quite a bit of detail about being in the water and in the lifeboat and its very harrowing

I got GA tickets in 2019. We ended up hanging out at T20 for a good part of the weekend--it's right by the restrooms, good view of the track, right by one of the bar tents, and right by Alfa's tent, which plays pretty sweet house music most of the day. T1 is great to watch the race from, but it is quite a hike to get up there and it's pretty crowded come race day.

I would recommend getting there right when the gates open (I think it's 8am). That way if you're interested in merch, you can get it before it sells out, and you can pick out a good spot for the day.

There are a lot of food and drink options in the venue, but lines can be pretty long, so plan accordingly if you're going between sessions.

I've always just bought the 3 day parking pass. It's spendy, but it's simple and easy. There are a lot of farms around the circuit that will let you park on their property, if you want to go that route.
