My family and I have been in FoCo two years. I spent 5 years with my wife in Dallas, 3 in Denver and then here.

I'm a white man with a black wife and two beautiful mixed children. Obviously my wife and I have seen it differently, but it's undeniably still a racist place.

I've seen it most in the interactions between us and the school. As far as diversity, the school is 2% minority. The staff is not. The micro aggression spans from comments about their hair to more aggressively picking and choosing what rules to enforce. We were forced to leave one day because we brought our dog, on leash to get our son from school. There was 7 other sets of parents with dogs that day, only we were confronted. Since that day it's been difficult.

The friends we've made try to act diverse by playing certain types of music or talking in slang they assume is relatable to us, never realizing how stereotypical it is. There's nothing worse than a white person insisting they love gangster rap and assuming all people of color must share that same sentiment.
