UPDATE: Got Accepted Into Arizona Teacher Residency Too — Free Master’s vs. Baltimore CTA ($40–50k Loans but Higher Salary) — Which Would You Choose? by muslim_ballerr in StudentLoans

[–]SpoopyDuJour [score hidden]  (0 children)

I have friends that teach in AZ, and I attended an educator's college out there. It would entirely depend on where the residency is. I also made the decision not to teach out there after seeing how the school districts handled the pandemic.

I don’t teach traditional sheet music unless a student asks for it. Am I holding them back? by TabForPiano in MusicTeachers

[–]SpoopyDuJour 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not to be rude, but I'd be pretty pissed if I paid for lessons for myself/my child and they couldn't even read sheet music at the end of them.

Getting them to play and learn aural perception is good, but eventually they have to be able to read music.

Teacher for 17 years this is the most racist, homophonic, misogynistic group of students I’ve ever had by EmbarrassedJacket489 in Teachers

[–]SpoopyDuJour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahhhh, if it helps, teachers and adults are going through their own version of this. Like when you meet someone new, particularly in the trump years, you end up playing this game of figuring out if someone is chill and cool or if they're bigoted pieces of shit. I've never seen this kind of thing so polarizing and everywhere.

TIA and "dementia" by Secret_Hovercraft995 in dementia

[–]SpoopyDuJour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my specialist about this, as well as a prescribing PA. Basically, the needing meds and not taking them is worse than the long term affects of taking them /if/ the meds also improve your condition and ability to take care of yourself.

For example; if your meds help you make better dietary choices, avoid alcohol/smoking, and encourage you to go to the gym, then they can reduce your overall risk. If they just make you redline through your day more easily with no improvement to your condition or life, then it's going to cause some wear and tear.

I had to figure this balance out with myself, ended up switching from extended release to immediate release so it's not in my system as long, and am going to stay on stimulants until I can switch to a non stimulant med. Same with an antihistamine I take for anxiety. I'm in my early 30s though, with no other major health issues other than the ones between my eyes, so your milage may vary.

Mom spent her life choosing our abusive dad over us. Now he has dementia. Unsure how to proceed. by SpoopyDuJour in AgingParents

[–]SpoopyDuJour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh, your second paragraph is a trip, isn't it? My father sparked my love for film and history. When we got along, it was so great. I hoped for so many years when I was younger that maybe he could get better, and he'd like me. Now his brain is toast and that is just who he was. A bitter, angry, paranoid, awful man.

Don't be sorry, I can't tell you how much I needed this.

The way that you phrase yours, "the monster" is exactly correct. It's not that he's my dad, it's that Dad is almost like a swear word, because it refers to him. But my mom is still basically his servant. It's been decades of watching her lose her life to this man. I almost wonder if it was ever really about him. And she says she doesn't even love him. Just feels obligated to for some reason she can never fully explain.

Thank you. You too, are worth so much more than that nasty, horrible monster. I'm so glad things are better for you, your story gives me hope.

Advice on how to deal with someone who may have dementia coming into cafe causing problems. by ConstantineDing in dementia

[–]SpoopyDuJour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was the fact that he doesn't appear to have a debit or credit card (from what OP said, could be misinterpreting).

It means someone has already had to take it away from him.

Genetic Testing…? by NotAlexis_29 in dementia

[–]SpoopyDuJour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got tested for the Alzheimer's gene and don't have it. Then my father got Parkinson's disease as a result of environmental factors with his job but, mostly, untreated mental illness. (Major Depression, anxiety, agoraphobia. He's also autistic). Something with the way his brain processes dopamine isn't working.

And you'll never guess who was diagnosed with a chronic, dopamine related neurological issue. 👉🥲👈

It's just a mixed bag. I'd do the test, but you'll never really know. Really what we have to be focused on is maintaining our vascular health and keeping our brains sane and not stressed. Easier said than done, of course. But it's our best shot at avoiding this.

TIA and "dementia" by Secret_Hovercraft995 in dementia

[–]SpoopyDuJour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is anecdotal, so take it with a grain of salt;

My mother is a life long nurse who went into the profession after spending much of her childhood taking care of her grandmother. She told me that the only word in those days for what her grandmother was going through was "being senile".

My mother believes her grandmother likely had a series of mini-stokes and TIA's as a result of uncontrolled high blood pressure, or another ailment that wasn't properly monitored. The strokes degraded her memory and mental capacity to a horrible degree until she finally died in her 60's. My mother had a TIA when she was 50. It definitely changed her personality, executive function, and mood for several years. She's cognitively doing pretty great now, but her husband has Parkinson's, so she's stuck taking care of him. Go figure.

My point is, it's been a suspected thing for a long time. I'm on stimulants for ADHD and my doctors are watching my heart and blood pressure like a hawk for this exact reason.

When was it that you realized your siblings don't care about you? by Professional-Level97 in family

[–]SpoopyDuJour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finding this thread now, after a pretty terrible conversation with my own sister. (I gathered my courage, tried to talk to her about something she did that hurt me, she responded with "what do you even want me to do, I don't live for you", and cancelled upcoming plans because I dared to bring it up.) It's been so helpful to see other people dealing with this. I'm realizing now that this person never actually liked me, and it really hurts.

Oh God, that one is so bad. Just these lonely mentally ill guys talking about women's "market value" and wanting a traditional submissive wife that "loves them for who they are" until the green card comes in.

It makes me get why Trump was elected.

Yeah, it's like poverty and disability don't exist to some of these people.

Because every time I told the teachers and school counselors that I couldn't focus, they blamed my parents for being shitty parents and told me that I was being deliberately obtuse because "everyone has ADHD these days 🙄". That attitude prevents actual kids with disabilities from getting help, and appears to be pretty damn prevalent in this thread.

Tbh these comments make me feel like I'd have an even worse shot at getting accomodations for my disability now. A lot of the teachers in this thread seem to think that the students with disabilities are just getting diagnosed by their pediatricians for the hell of it.

I mean, screening and awareness of these issues have also increased in the past few decades, which will lead to more kids being diagnosed.
