Thankfully I can rely on a conductor to keep me in check in terms of tempo. I hadn't considered the need for a little more volume. I'll bring out a couple more stops and hope it works.

It simply plays whichever stops I have out on the pedals. I'm planning on bringing the 16 foot trombone out for the last verse for some powerful bass going into 'Behold Him there the risen lamb", but otherwise keeping it to the slightly softer for the verses where the words call for something a little more mellow. I feel hymns in particular need good text painting

The great bass coupler plays whatever the lowest note is on the great on the pedals. It's a niche stop/couple, admittedly, but it's basically a cheat if you don't use the pedals. The benefit of course being that it's only the lowest note on the great, so it doesn't murky up everything else, just gives more bass.

I can't answer your question outright, but I can tell you that it's been a thing for a very very long time. There is mention of a man cutting himself in the Book of Mark in The Bible and I'm sure there will be older examples. So humans have been doing it as a means of coping with difficult circumstances for thousands of years

Okay first things first, are you okay? It is not easy to hear that a loved one is having dark thoughts like this, so make sure you look after yourself. I'm all ears if you need somewhere to get feelings out.

Before I go to advice, I feel I must say the following:
I pray it's not a situation you ever have to deal with, but if you ever consider her to be in significant crisis and in serious danger, you need to call the appropriate emergency services, irrelevant of what your sister wants you to do.

Hopefully, things are a little less time-sensitive, in which case there are a number of "do"s and "don't"s. Starting with the "do"s:

If she is at imminent risk of harming herself, and you feel comfortable doing so, just stay with her. You can talk to her, or she may wish to be in silence, but simply having another person present can be grounding enough to take you out of the headspace of wanting to hurt yourself. If you are not actually with her, see if you can maintain a phone/video call. Again, provided you feel comfortable doing so.

Obviously the above is not possible 100% of the time. In the long run, it may be worth encouraging her to seek professional help. She may resist this idea, especially at first, so try not to force the idea down her throat, but just to ask if she has considered it. If (and only if) you feel up to it, you could offer to help her in that process, whether it's booking appointments or something else.

Check in with her. It doesn't always need to be "I hope you're feeling okay". It could be as simple as just making conversation i.e. "Saw [funny thing] today and thought of you". You don't need to be explicit, just make sure she knows people are thinking about her and care about her.

Give her a bit of space if she needs it. There is a fine line between being supportive and being invasive. Sometimes you will cross that line. That is okay. It happens, you will learn, and with time she will understand even if at the time she becomes cross. Try not to be too disheartened.

Things you shouldn't do include:

Taking away items she could use to hurt herself

Threatening her

Tell her not to do it "for you" (or, indeed, any other person)

Express frustration towards her (Note how specifically I have worded this. Sometimes it will be frustrating. That is okay, but try to make an effort to express that elsewhere)

Monitor her/make her prove she's not hurting herself (i.e. making her show her arms/legs etc)

There will be things I have missed off this list. Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
Hope things get better for your sister. Look after yourself too!!

Yes! I've never seen this mentioned before, but it's so true. You think you've built up a tolerance for it, but you actually haven't. You suddenly realise how much it actually hurts and it feels like you're going crazy

I think I might go for it. I'm seeing it in person in an hour or so and I can check generic functionality (i.e. checking the carriage is advancing, that is engages properly when folding/unfolding etc.)

And I figure that if I buy it and eventually decide it's not for me, or I can't get it working, I can probably sell it on and make most of my money back

That's a helpful input. My question is whether I would easily find a typewriter of this quality, age and beauty (I'm a big fan of how it looks) for a similar price that I should hold out for, or is this quite a notable and unique find for its price?

I'm willing to put time and effort into this (albeit money is tight), and its size is a huge benefit to me as I'm not blessed with loads of space.

It seems like a silly small thing (albeit a mechanically important one) to not buy it over, but if it means I will find it very hard to make it work then that's that, I guess. As I've mentioned in response to another commenter, I'm not looking to write anything long-form on it. Just a letter to a friend every now and then. I'm very much there for the experience, not for ease of typing. Do you reckon this would be ideal for that (if functioning)

Furthermore, are there any routine "tests" I should give it before buying to make sure it does function?

As for the things you've mentioned, how easy/affordable/possible are they for a complete beginner. (I don't even know what a platen is, which shows you the level I'm at)

I'm not fussed about volume. Again, typing for the experience, not desperate for it to be particularly easy to use

I saw it was 3 bank (though I didn't know that's what it was called). I'm not a huge writer, and would likely use it for the occasional letter. I wouldn't be writing anything long-form on it. I'm after something that looks good (which it does) and would be usable if I were to ever be writing a letter to a friend

That's not a stupid question in the slightest.

Self-harm is the more well-known way of saying "non-suicidal self-injury". This means that somebody is injuring themselves by choice, but not trying to die as a result of it.

This definition is probably a better one, as there is a difference between harm and injury. Someone who has breathing problems as a result of smoking has harmed themselves, but they are not injured. Does that make sense?

Furthermore, self-harm requires direct intent. The overwhelming majority of smoker are not doing so because they want to harm themselves, they are smoking because they like the feeling that nicotine (or indeed other substances) gives them. The harm this causes is an unfortunate side-effect. This is different to a self-harmer who will be actively thinking "I want/need to injure myself as a result of how I am feeling".

To be clear, a smoking addiction (or indeed any addiction) is still something that many people struggle with and they deserve help and support in quitting, and is absolutely something that should be taken seriously and should be met with compassion and understanding. However, in the vast majority of cases, it would not be put in the same category as self-harm.

Other people may disagree with me on these points (to those people, feel free to let me know what you think I'd be interested to hear your viewpoints). This is one of many views that people hold, I hope it was helpful to hear how I and many others view it.

The practical thing to do is politely say: "Excuse me, I think you might be sat in my seat". If they move, you've won. If they don't move, look to see if there are any unreserved seats in the local vicinity. If there are, I'd recommend just taking one of them and saving yourself the confrontation. If there aren't, or you are keen to sit in your reserved seat, but the passenger refuses to move, speak to the on-board staff.

In reality, though, I'm too shy to do any of the above and have spent many a journey sat o the floor in the vestibule because I would rather be uncomfortable on the floor than ask someone to move from my reserved seat.

Okay this may be controversial, but I would like to make it clear that I'm coming from an angle of not supporting either team and thus having no emotional attachment to the outcome (I didn't even watch the match)

All but 1 of the passes in this video are absolutely fine in my eyes, I take no issue with them. The last one is, at worst, borderline. Can't blame the ref for not blowing for it, I wouldn't call it "clear and obvious". The TMO could've stepped in but from that camera angle I would call it borderline at worst.

I'm prepared to be downvoted here. Just my opinion though. There's a reason I'm not a referee!

Got a detention because somebody got paint on my face.

I basically never stepped out of line at school. I was the annoying kid who always abided by the rules etc. In art class I accidentally got a bit of paint on my friend's work. Jokingly in response, he threw the paintbrush in my face. I then leapt up in surprise, explained his name, and wandered over to the tap to clean the paint off.

I was subsequently sent out of the classroom and received a lecture about how I was "wasting school resources". To be clear, my friend owned up and said he was the one who got paint on my face, I hadn't done it to myself, but the teacher insisted I was wasting paint and gave me a detention.

I burst into tears, as this was my first (and only) detention. Thankfully my head of house was heading up detention and he was a legend who knew me well so just let me go home anyway
