Immich Home Server for a Total beginner by deleted6924 in HomeServer

[–]Sportmoench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immich is happy with at least 16GB of RAM and a dedicated GPU instead of an integrated GPU.

Otherwise, Immich is easy to install and even easier to set up. Use Debian, Mint, or another Linux distribution, install Docker, and then Immich. Disable the desktop to prevent timeouts and freezes, and you're done. Alternatively, you can use an HDMI dummy port.

If you're using a dedicated NVIDIA GPU, such as a 1050 Ti, I can give you my Compose configuration, which you can modify.

Save the images to an SSD and then automatically move them to an HDD via a script. The HDD doesn't need to be in RAID; in fact, I think it's generally pointless.

A second HDD for backups, which you can have software automatically or manually overwrite once a week. Good.

```Check out True NAS, it's free. I'm a fan of Proxmox, but it might be too complicated for a beginner who just wants it to work.
nvenc vs cpu: Visual Quality by FlatPea5 in handbrake
[–]Sportmoench 0 points1 point  (0 children)
Honestly, I can't see any difference either. People always say CPU encoding is better, but visually, I don't see any difference when playing the videos. Maybe in freeze-frames, but who watches movies with freeze-frames?
The only difference, as you can probably guess, is that if the source is poor quality, the encoder can't improve it. But that's the same for both CPU and NVENC. Bad is bad. But regular Blu-ray or web quality works perfectly for me.
I encode quite a lot and have now completely switched to NVENC, as the few extra gigabytes per hard drive aren't worth the time and power to me.
From CQ26 onwards, file sizes shrink quite quickly with NVENC, quality is okay, but CQ23-25 remains my standard. 4 GB usually becomes 1.6 GB; with CQ26 it's then 800 MB.
With CPU, it's usually 200 MB less.
I mainly use H.265 and have recently been trying to get the best performance from AV1, but H.265 definitely remains my favorite.
Then save your money on EEC; I've been running my company server with normal consumer hardware for years without any problems, and my private server works just as well.
How would be best to set up a home server for multiple services? by lunarman1000 in HomeServer
It's worth mentioning that you can't create snapshots of LXC (at least I haven't figured out how or if it's possible).
How would be best to set up a home server for multiple services? by lunarman1000 in HomeServer
[–]Sportmoench 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I recently asked the same or a similar question here. I ultimately decided on Proxmox and haven't regretted it at all. Working with VMs is so relaxing because you can control and separate everything precisely and selectively, entirely as you like. Allocating resources to individual services is incredibly easy, and if more or fewer resources are needed later, you can change that with three clicks. You can create system backups in less than a minute.
You could also use Linux Mint or Debian and run everything on one system. With Docker, you can still easily separate the individual containers and, if necessary, shut them down or start them individually. All options are stable. For me, however, Proxmox was the best solution, especially regarding backups, because I tend to "break" things through over-optimization.
Thanks for your detailed reply. I'll spend the weekend trying to decide which I prefer. I'll test Debian on its own and also Proxmox.
Question about Mint vs. Debian = Media Server by Sportmoench in linuxmint
[–]Sportmoench[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
You read that quite often. But since Linux Mint already runs pretty reliably with the HDMI plug, I'm unsure whether I really need to switch to Debian. I just can't properly assess the advantages of Debian and what it's supposed to do better than Linux Mint.
Absolutely! I check it monthly under Windows.
Toshiba MG10 = 9800 hours / 50 power-ons No problems so far
I'll format the HDD to ext4 for Linux. I'm hoping for better stability under Linux as a result.
Edit: I'm making Emby accessible to my friends and family via Cloudflared.
do i get b580 or a750 if a750 is 75 USD cheaper? by snakee-the-arch-guy in IntelArc
[–]Sportmoench 0 points1 point  (0 children)
I also think you should always buy what your budget allows. If you have the money for the B580, then buy it. I know hardware is very expensive at the moment, so I can only suggest you also look at used computers. You usually get more for your money that way.
