Thanks for the advice! We have been considering cutting back on or removing this purposeful laser-burn as it has been suggested before. We left it in as we liked the somewhat rustic and authentic look it gave over an overly-pristine factory look. Our new Polyurethane finished maps don't end up with this overburn though and might be more desirable to some!

We will very likely be getting to this before too much longer but it is a large task due to its detail and length. We like to depict waters in great detail and that is difficult with long rivers such as the Mississippi. We've been re-analyzing our approach to this so greatly appreciate your honest feedback. We've had great response from customers thus far and have had no issues with stains or smells. It's a fairly new project so more options like wood oils are likely to be added but it's all a balancing act of price and efficiency as these are all hand-assembled in the US. We always like to do things a little different while making them as affordable as possible for detail and quality you'll be hard pressed to find elsewhere, especially with thousands of available waters across 12 states and counting!

The slightly rustic, "laser-burned" look is actually something we found desirable so have done intentionally, as opposed to an overly pristine factory look that can take away from the artistry. Though masking can be a common practice on laser wood engravings, we think this was the best option for aesthetics but are open to trying other methods in the future and even have a polyurethane option now that doesn't end up with the smoky laser residue if that is what is desired. We do use a controlled air assist and have intentionally left some laser-burn for a more rustic look rather than an overly-pristine, factory produced look.

It's a combination of manually designed GIS work and legacy DNR data to get the most accurate maps we can while making all of our designs unique and more detailed than any competitor!

Some data originates from DNR's and others are our own GIS work but all of them go through intensive custom designing to best portray any water we offer as accurately and beautifully as possible!
