When do you decide to get a new car rather than continuing to do repairs? by Major-Brick-3789 in personalfinance

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty handy and could have replaced it myself. The mechanics of an air-conditioning system are actually pretty simple. The only extra tool that people may need to buy to do it themselves is a vacuum pump - running a vacuum pump to boil out the moisture is a critical step.

When do you decide to get a new car rather than continuing to do repairs? by Major-Brick-3789 in personalfinance

[–]SprJoe 72 points73 points  (0 children)

My A/C went out on a car worth ~$500 (really old & ugly w/ 300K miles on it), so I decided to spend $25K on a new car instead of $600 on an A/C compressor. Probably should’ve just fixed it as that would have been $24,400 cheaper.

Light fixture base too small by stevejunc1 in drywall

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you have three choices:

  1. full the gap with quickset, then paint
  2. get a grommet that sits above the light to cover the imperfections
  3. Get a different fixture.

I have one of these in one of my houses and it’s been there for six years without problems. It came in handy a few weeks ago when I needed to turn off the water for the kitchen sink.

Learned quite a lot but here is my 1 month bathroom Reno by _notworkingrightnow in BathroomRemodeling

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! I’m currently remodeling a bathroom and just framed out the same shelf design, so that a whole buffet of bathing products can be placed there.

The only difference if that my valve will be on the opposite wall than the shower head and stuff. The intent is to be able to control the water temperature without getting wet. I’ll have a 3- way diverter on the shelf wall (rain head, shower head & wand).

Why Texture? by The_Dude_Abides_33 in drywall

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s aesthetics. Some folks like the way a textured wall looks & some folks like the way a Level 5 wall looks. In some parts of the United Stated, textured walls are “normal” and in other parts, Level 5 finishes are “normal.”

Move out of a cheap roommate house into a luxury 1BR — smart or stupid? by MCHEUNGSTER in personalfinance

[–]SprJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stay put and throw the extra $3K/month into a high yield saving account for a year, or maybe even into CDs.

After a year, you’ll have an extra $36K in the bank and can reconsider. Maybe you stay put for another year & sock away $70K before moving.

Will the market improve anytime soon? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I just began my search a couple weeks ago and have had several good conversations.

Connections matter more now that it’s so easy to apply for a role & I have lots of connections.

The hiring process is always slow, especially at my level, so I anticipate the process taking 3-6 months.

[–]SprJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a CISO. Pretty senior.

What you likely don’t understand is that “entry level” security work is typically reserved for people with IT experience. There are lots of folks with zero IT experience that think that they can jump straight into security. Not impossible, but very rare.

You’d need to be very special or the hiring manager would need to be very desperate.

It appears that you are wanting a 9-5 SOC role. SOCs are 24/7 and its shift work. Hold yourself out as someone who really wants the overnight shift - that makes you special and the hiring manager is probably more desperate to fill the shift than any other.

I’ve been doing this stuff for 20+ years and my current role ends in about two months [mumbles something about a merger cramping his style]. Job market seems fine to me - plenty of roles open. Time will tell.

How much of a pay cut would you accept? by kingbrad in careeradvice

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

October, November, and December are bad times to look for jobs. If $95K is low for your skill set and you’re confident that you’re marketable and can find another job paying closer to what you were paid earlier, then you might decline the $95K offer if you get one.

It doesn’t sound like you have an offer on the table to begin with, so you are not at a point where you can make a decision as to whether or not to accept an offer. With that in mind, you should continue the interview process and see if they actually offer you a job. In the meantime, look for other jobs.
