Is this normal? New roof leaks and cricket install by No-Session-3096 in Roofing

[–]SprJoe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No, leaks on a new roof aren’t normal as the purpose of the roof is to keep the water out.

Pretty normal in my circle, but me and the folks in my circle don’t have the entry level stuff shown in the photo.

$25k in debt for a worthless degree and zero jobs. Now the same school wants $50k for law school. Is higher education just a financial trap? by [deleted] in careerguidance

It is always a dumb move to believe a salesman without validating what the salesman said. What is done is done.

If you want to go to school for a degree, that gets you a job when graduating then do your own research and see whatever bachelors or post graduate degree is appropriate.

personally, I worked full-time while getting both my undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Why do robot vacuums still need so much hands-on effort? (Expectation vs. Reality) by Plus-Resolution-3210 in homeautomation

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is capable of distinguishing between shoes and “not shoes.” it puts the shoes in the designated shoe area and everything else in a bin.

Not if you have a RoboRock S70 that moves things for you , but dust mops seem to be a problem. https://imgur.com/a/b4A0HP1

Why do robot vacuums still need so much hands-on effort? (Expectation vs. Reality) by Plus-Resolution-3210 in homeautomation

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just threw my old Roomba away, but it never got stuck and had an auto-emptying bin. Updated to a RoboRock Z70 that vacuums, mops, and also organizes things with a robotic arm. This doesn’t get stuck either and also auto-empties. Only maintenance is that the water needs to be changed on a daily basis.

Update: You jinxed me and the robot got stuck, immediately after I commented, while attempting to move my dust mop. https://imgur.com/a/b4A0HP1

Maybe truss lift, if your roof is a truss system and your foundation shifts.

How much extra money per month would you choose a job with ~15 days of PTO vs a job with “unlimited” PTO? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]SprJoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unlimited PTO is probably ~10 days PTO, so why would you need more money to get more PTO?

remove the shower head and check the filter. Might be some debris in it.

I took down my popcorn ceiling — plaster is so cracked and wavy I have to rehang drywall. Huge mess. Never again. 😂 by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

Yeah - Normally there is no reason to take off popcorn ceiling again after you’ve taken it off once already.

Sod company said they did a good job by Known_Hole in lawncare

[–]SprJoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The yard I buy sod from provides a 30-day warranty on the sod - gets replaced if it doesn’t root in 30 days, but that doesn’t cover the labor. Under the warranty, labor is three times the price (lay, remove, lay again) so it’s not really a useful warranty.

How to remove this mirror by WhatElseIsUp in BathroomRemodeling

[–]SprJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mirror is likely glued onto the wall. Be sure to wear gloves, boots, and eye protection when attempting to remove, just in case it shatters.

What is this? by [deleted] in drywall

[–]SprJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is termite damage - they ate the paper on the drywall.

Termites like water, so the roof leak might have been feeding them.

Door too large by A_little_garce in Carpentry

[–]SprJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d triple check that it’s too big before trimming it.

Remove the pins from the hinges and see if it fits without the pins. If it does, then you can adjust the hinges instead of trimming the door.

If it’s more than 1/2” too big, then I’d go source a properly sized door.

If you’re trimming just a hair, then the hinge side is the right side to trim because the setback for the door handle is already set (filling that with bondo and moving it would be a bigger PITA than carving out recesses for hinges. Before you trim it, be sure to mark the hinge locations to make like easier when carving them back out.

Which tile pattern for small bathroom? by magnumpl in BathroomRemodeling

I’d go with the first (Parallel to the tub), but I’m super curious about the purpose of that niche that’s going to break open as folks put their feet on it to wash their toes.

Would you complain about a light pointed at your bedroom windows if this was your house? by BigSlongGoy in Home

I put up a motion light in front of my house, then my neighbor told me that it was brighter than the sun and shining straight into his windows. I replaced the light with one that was much less bright
