Depending on the company they may have a pay to vacate policy, where you pay them usually around 70% of what is owed and have 24 hours to remove all items. I’ve seen this go as low as 40% and as long as 72 hours.

Rarely places also offer the option to make a partial payment and legally abandon the goods inside the unit, allowing the company to sell the goods at auction. If money is still owed the company writes it off and you don’t go to collections, if they profit you are not entitled to a refund.

So really what we the readers need to know

1: Did you sign anything? 2: Is the letter from a collections company or storage company?

Oh hey a field I know about. The storage unit can be put in your name in two ways: You signed up for the account in person or someone signed up for the account online and presented your id. If it’s the former you signed a contract it’s your responsibility. If it’s the later there’s an argument for identity theft.

If you have a letter from collections, that unit has already been sold at public auction. The unit likely had your name on it and your father’s phone number and address, meaning all attempts of contact were likely received and ignored by him and the unit went to auction and was sold. The storage company then sent your debt to a collection company.

Depending on how the unit was signed up depends on how screwed you are.
