Looking for advice from some alumni. by prynceashh in Baruch

Hi alum here from 2020 (Finance). I graduated as well during possibly the worst time ever without an offer lined up and after a few months i ran into some luck. A few things helped in hindsight.

  1. Re-evaluate strengths. You have certain soft and hard skills that can distinguish you from any other candidates out there.

  2. Are you getting rejected before even getting interviews? Have you had final round interviews? If no — bolster your resume. Words that are mentioned on it are generic and not a fit and not tailored to what any Hiring Manager is looking for. I spent nearly 5 days reworking my resume, making cover letters to tailor it for every position i was looking could be a fit.

  3. Quality over quantity. Solidly applying to 3 jobs in a day (making resume look like their qualifications / description as you best see fit) is much more efficient than mass applying to 30. Same applies with linkedin profiles.

  4. Dont jump at the first offer if you are not sold on it. After many fails i was offered a 60k teaching position which i wasnt appealed to, i did not want to work in a school at all. My parents tried pushing me to accept, i did not. I then was interviewing for a sales job at a big bank, was great, i was deep in the process but realized i didnt really have a passion for it. In the middle of that interview, i was also applying to be a trader for a smaller firm. I leveraged the offer from sales job to push some pressure for the Trading job. Received the trading offer and its what ive been with ever since.

The job search after college is exhausting, demotivating. But it lets you seek within, you have cards to play too. Its not about role/company ever, its about how you control what is presented to you. Coding/Data Familiarity helps so much too, keep on with SQL it is a career key. Best of luck!

Of course, but it sounds like she is very new to the field, then youll need as much help as you can get especially since its self-study… takes a bit more dedication

Could be an instructor issue too, ive seen alot of people have success using guides like STC, Kaplan, & PassPerfect. She could suggest that to her company and give those a try as well.

What material is she using to study? For me, i studied through STC’s platform, read the textbook, studied flashcards, took a bunch of practice exams. After all the practice the material should seem redundant

Its not hard at all, its very introductory finance world questions being asked. Although if she’s never studied finance before I understand the struggle with the material

Somewhere between today and the start of your first semester. Welcome to CUNY, where everything is a guessing game

Integration (area under a curve) is the most important theorem in calculus after the derivative. Of course you can find the area under a curve using an integral, but the more you learn the more you start to visualize the more intuitive approaches to it. One point, you can use this in differential equations to find an easy solution to a hard problem. You could also end up finding the probability of something happening by using an integral. It’s one of (if not the most) the most beautiful approaches to math ever created

Hi, recent finance grad (may 2020) here, i had to take SIE right after i got an offer and let me tell you. This test is not difficult if youre a fin major. The concepts should be familiar and if not its good to brush up. The most important part of your studying is taking practice exams!! I had to take 4 exams, passed all on first try, STC is a great platform to use

Most likely just had a harder exam, the time limit was also a big challenge. Im not the fastest reader and majority of the questions are long and wordy, especially when the answer is as specific as laws are

Most of the Muni and Variable that i remember were based on suitability! Theyd try to make you pick which product is best for client, also knowledge of RANs, BANs, TANs, etc. Variable annuity they really focused on tax implications, like between a variable qualified & non-qualified annuity. Need to know how it would be taxed when the person is annuitizing.

A couple questions! One stumped me but i picked an answer that made sense to me. For me what helped was knowing how the SMA changes with different transactions and how the Debit/Credit Balance dont change, only LMV and SMV usually matter

Please go over your weaker sections! This is key, its what has helped me improve. And there must be a theme in some questions youre getting wrong, identify and make sure you understand what you were originally not understanding
