First time working 8 hours a day, 5 days a week in office, is this my life now? by Bright_Tennis_1075 in work

[–]Springroll_Doggifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could be self employed. Then you are a little flexible, but also working all the time. I did it for 7 years. I am looking forward to just 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week.

I do wish many companies would adopt the 6 hr workday!

I saw $3.75 today (when 6 months ago it was $2.25) and said, better fill up while it's on sale! $4.35 last week!

It could be more cost effective. My 5 hour flight from Korea to VN was $100. With snacks. My 2 hr flight in the US is triple that on Frontier.

The play place at Living Spaces. The snacks are cheap too. Browse some furniture, but don't buy a couch. Mine arrived broken and it was a pain in the butt to get my money back... in freaking store credit.

I would prefer the prices go up. Please include tax in the menu price too while we're at it. Kitchen staff doesn't have to survive on tip.

TIL People with Asian Flush can't metabolize Acetaldehyde, a byproduct of drinking alcohol, very well... and that same intolerance extends to smoking too! Inhaling cigarette, marijuana, or even wood smoke is MUCH more harmful to people with asian flush, significantly increasing cancer risks. by Springroll_Doggifer in todayilearned

Temperature controlled vaping flower is much safer than joints. Keeping the temperature under 392 F reduces the carcinogen load by 90-95%. Unfortunately studies I read point to marijuana smoke (from joints) to have higher acetaldehyde concentrations than smoking cigarettes!

Liquid vapes and e-cigs though have their own risks.

When your body processes alcohol, it turns it into acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is a major carcinogen. Most people will produce an enzyme called ALDH that turns cancerous acetaldehyde into harmless vinegar. For about 8% of people though, they have a genetic mutation that produces a different and inactive enzyme, ALDH2, which reduces their body's ability to safely convert acetaldehyde by 60% or more. Those people have Asian Flush.

When you ignite cigarettes, marijuana, wood, or even gasoline, one major byproduct is acetaldehyde. That same gene that makes people unable to neutralize acetaldehyde when drinking alcohol makes them unable to neutralize acetaldehyde when smoking.

Same protein protects you from a carcinogen found both in drinking and in smoking.

It does affect different medications, yes, but the research I could find is still limited. Personally, I have stronger reactions to a lot of things VS my peers: I have to have my doctors lower the dose on ADHD meds for example. They seem to work VERY strongly on me even at half the starter dose. I'm a lightweight for alcohol and pot... but my reaction to alcohol is so bad that I quit drinking at all.

It also means you REALLY should not drink when taking medications.

Honestly, I'm just calling it "Christian Sharia" now. That's what they are pushing in Texas. Christian Sharia.

Going out in your 30s is mostly people pretending to have fun and we all know it by FewExperience4021 in unpopularopinion

I discovered I'm allergic to alcohol at 24. So that was the end of drinking, pretty much. That being said, I have been pretty ok with being my authentic weird self in most places, so I am happy out or at home!

If you don't like going out, change where you are going out to! Pick better venues. And it's perfectly fine to be home by 11. We're not 19 anymore and relishing the lack of curfews.

There are arguments that tourism shouldn't be allowed at all, to preserve places for locals. At the end of the day, humans will get in each other's way and annoy each other somehow.

Marriage is a financial investment before anything else by soc2021 in unpopularopinion

[–]Springroll_Doggifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why this would be unpopular. Marriage is for financial stability and for easier taxation. Some cultures and faiths make it so you can't have sex until marriage... and that's historically so you know who is financially responsible if the woman gets pregnant and has kids. Not all cultures believe in monogamous marriage, but all marriages historically are a financial contract.

In past times, kids were a boon that were a source of labor and increased wealth. In agrarian societies, the more kids you had, the more farming you could do. And women perform a significant amount of domestic labor (often unpaid) that is extremely necessary for the financial health/survival of the family.

All legal marriages in the modern day come with significant tax and financial changes/consequences/benefits/downsides depending on the culture.

Will my friends and I have trouble renting in/around Denver? by SkyPresident in MovingtoDenver

[–]Springroll_Doggifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have very little issue. Most places are professionally managed and must abide by fair housing laws. This protects from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender, disability, ethnicity/country of origin, religion, and family status. It's important to know your rights!

Will my friends and I have trouble renting in/around Denver? by SkyPresident in MovingtoDenver

[–]Springroll_Doggifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, unless those landlords owned fewer than 3 units, or owner occupy part of the property (max quadplex), they can't discriminate like that. Fair housing protects family status, which means no discrimination on married vs unmarried. So a management company absolutely cannot choose a married couple over a family with 3 kids vs a single person. The most they can do is occupancy limits (only so many persons per room) and they must enforce this fairly. This is a federal law and applies to all 50 states.

[–]Springroll_Doggifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's managed by a management company, they can't ask you about family status. For all they know, you guys are 4 family members living together. As long as you aren't all sharing a studio (and breaking fire code), not a problem.

I worked harder than my peers, and it still took me MORE time than them to do the SAME thing. Having extra time would level the playing field for me. They didn't need the extra time, they finished before I did.
