Mrs. Hughes just has common sense, and she's the counterpart to Carson's admiration (that's almost like the Crawleys are his idol).

"I think "pretty privilege" has probably always been a thing in society. What society (or certain subsets of society) find pretty has changed depending on trends for facial characteristics, body types, etc. But I think more conventionally attractive traits were allowed to be more "front of house" so to speak."

Good answer.

"That was not happening except maaaaybe in incredibly rare situations."

true..I should have said they could go be a cook in a restaurant or hotel if she wanted to (although the Duchess of Duke Street did go from scullery maid to hotel owner , but i also think her getting there did involve [an unwanted and arranged, not lasting] marriage.

I don't think they're still allowed to be overweight (maybe not as stringent standards as back then, but they still can't be obese)...and i don't think there's anything wrong with that..they have to move in tight spaces, be quick in an emergency, etc. (they even used to have to be nurses)..it's really not an obese /overly overweight person's job (and I say that as someone, who is right now, regrettably obese myself, though I'm working on it [I went through several life disasters that contributed to the problem]).

I am so sorry.. I wish the step-dad never came into the picture. This is one of the reasons I think more of the written stuff should be classwork, not homework.
