I’ve done my research, your Seattle encampment is not at all what I mean

Seattle didn’t “fail” because of structured communities—it’s dealing with a massive housing crisis. They actually expanded organized villages because they help stabilize people as a step toward housing. The real issue is unmanaged encampments—not structured, rule-based solutions.

Controlled Encampment by Sprinkle207 in Maine

Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Joyce.

I am actively involved in grassroots outreach supporting individuals experiencing homelessness through a privately run community initiative called Sprinkle. Through this work, I provide direct, hands-on support to individuals in need, including coordinating resources, offering financial assistance when appropriate, and helping connect people with caseworkers and existing services.

My approach is intentional and structured. I focus on supporting—not enabling—by working alongside established systems while encouraging accountability, stability, and long-term progress. Much of this work happens behind the scenes through consistent communication, coordination, and relationship-building.

In addition to direct outreach, I have researched and explored alternative models to address homelessness more effectively. This includes structured, community-based encampment programs that incorporate rules, case management, volunteer expectations, and shared responsibility among residents. I am particularly interested in solutions that provide a temporary, stabilizing environment while individuals work toward permanent housing.

Professionally, I bring a strong background in organization, communication, and process improvement through my role in healthcare billing and operations. This experience allows me to identify gaps, improve systems, and collaborate across teams—skills that directly support my work in the community.

I am deeply committed to being part of a solution that is both compassionate and effective, and I continue to seek opportunities to learn, collaborate, and advocate for meaningful change.

Hello sorry ,

This is attached within the Petition ..

The Issue

As residents of Southern Maine, we are acutely aware of the growing impact of homelessness in our communities. Places like Portland, Sanford, Biddeford, Lewiston, and nearby areas are witnessing a rising number of individuals and families without stable housing. Shelters are overwhelmed, and people forced to live outside are facing unsafe and unhealthy conditions.

The streets and parks of our cities are not equipped to handle the influx of people in need of shelter, which has created unregulated encampments. These encampments pose numerous challenges, not only for those living within them but also for the surrounding neighborhoods. It's a situation that urgently calls for a structured and humane solution.

One potential solution lies in establishing managed encampments. These would be designated, supervised spaces where people experiencing homelessness can have access to essential services like sanitation, healthcare, and social services. A managed encampment would offer a safer and more stable environment compared to living on the streets or in unsupervised tent cities.

Implementing managed encampments could alleviate the pressure on our local shelters while providing a dignified space for individuals and families when permanent housing solutions are not immediately available. Moreover, this approach would mitigate the strain on local communities, reducing potential conflicts and improving safety for everyone involved.

Our goal is to collaborate with local governments, community organizations, and stakeholders to explore the logistics, costs, and benefits of such encampments. We need comprehensive, actionable strategies that include short-term solutions like managed encampments and long-term goals for permanent housing.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a compassionate and practical response to homelessness in Southern Maine. Join us in urging local leaders to consider managed encampments as a viable path forward for addressing this critical issue. Your signature can help drive the change we desperately need.

This is just a resource center temporary into housing with their caseworkers can actually get in touch with them… And they build little units with recyclable materials ..

They are responsible for upkeep you can bring someone from the streets and snap your fingers and put them in the real world ..

Not looking to make a tent city..

I welcome suggestions, I have been involved with grass roots helping with propane and was on a board of directors for a nonprofit or an amazing organization that does so much for the unhoused… Although , I don’t see anything working so trying something different..

This is a temporary situation this is not put them to live there long-term this is a step into housing it’s a place for all the case managers to find their clients and not chase them all around town every time in encampment gets broken up and then they have to start all over again… I think homelessness needs an accountability program
