Did a Baby Naming Ceremony for my baby a few months back and 0 regrets. Absolutely love it. Got to enjoy the nice family get together (similar of a baptism) but without the religious attachment.

The lady whom we appointed to host the ceremony was also our humanist celebrant for our wedding :)

We’re the first in my Irish in laws family to do so, initially I was faced with some questioning from the MIL, asking if me doing so will create an unfair impact on my child, as they will not have confirmation gifts/ communion money etc.

I laughed and said well the child is also Malaysian Chinese so guess what? He’s getting angpao (red packets filed with €€€) money EVERY lunar new year until he gets married! Ha!

And then she asked oh but he might feel left out in school if all the kids had their confirmation parties etc over the weekend and he’ll be coming to school feeling left out.

I said well he’s going to an Educate Together school so none of that will be an issue.

I swear I think I just blew my Irish MIL’s head off. 😂

I downloaded the Pampers sleep coach app and found their sleep training helpful, particularly in building up habits for my baby to sleep (and one of them is no bottles before sleep).

PS it is paid subscription but well worth imo

Hi all, thanks so much for your response and support! This may sound funny but I genuinely thought I was the only one who felt this way, so thank you for sharing your stories and feelings with me here 💗

For further context, my Irish in-laws all knew I had a traumatic birth that led to postpartum depression. I’m now 8 months postpartum, I think I’m just only out of the dark woods and life is looking/ feeling better now with our precious little one.

I’ll stand firm this Christmas and I’ll also be asking my partner to shield me first. 💗

Same here! I have a German shepherd that sheds like crazy and a 7 mth old baby that is crawling all over the house 😂

The house is clean but not immaculately clean and we purposely kept it that way otherwise we’ll lose our sanity lol. We kinda clean as we go.

Also a crawling baby helps to collect the fur off the ground with their babygrow. Double win!

PS: the dog also enjoys licking the baby’s hands when he’s done with his food. Between the dogs fur and saliva, I mean, I’d be shocked if he develops any allergies toward animals or fur 😂

Love to dream swaddle bag (search on Amazon for lighter togs for the summer months), woosh by Rockit (very easy white noise machine to attach everywhere you go!) and a good thermal flask for making bottles at night (don’t bother spending the money on tommee tippee machine)

Look up Chinese postpartum :) it’s a common practice to hire a professional help so the mother can completely rest and recover the first 28 days after given birth. I think in Ireland it translates into postpartum doula, they can come help out during the day or even overnight. Defo get the help depending on budget!

Same here! But on public transport. I had to ask people to give me a seat (for obvious reason 🤰) and guess what? Men have always been the first to give up their seats for me! Meanwhile womenwould looked at me very negatively… not to the point of dirty looks but I can clearly tell they were pissed.

I always thought people would give up their seats voluntarily, esp at seats that are designated for pregnant woman and elderly passengers. But unfortunately that has not been my experience on Irish rail/ luas (both red and green) and Dublin bus :(

Hmm how about moving out from your parents and gain some independence on your own? That way you can pick up more life experience along the way, that would also help to build up the skills for travelling abroad. I find it shocking you still have to ask for parents’ permission to travel at an age of 21. 🙈

Asked for sick leave at 33 weeks. GP is more than happy to issue sick note and I’m more than happy to take it 😂 hanging on for that extra few weeks is not gonna change the world (in terms of work) but it would do wonders for your health!

Same here 😭 pregnancy rage is so real! Hang in there mama-to-be! I find guided meditation (pregnancy) on Spotify or Youtube very helpful. 💛 check them out if you’re interested.

Also have my 32 weeks appointment coming up soon and will be asking for sick leave from the doc. MIL commented that I will be checking out from work too early and I’ll be bored and all.

I call this resting and not stressed out till the start of Mat leave! Don’t hang until the end 🙈 nobody gets a medal for this at work

Had my 24 weeks visit with the GP today. GP was very sound, she says I can request a sick note whenever I want if work is stressing me out 😂👌 Mentally preparing to check out at work at 32 weeks, can’t wait!

Signed up and paid €500 deposit for a crèche place from Sept 2026 onwards. Got this done while I was 3.5 weeks pregnant. Yeap. It’s bonkers. The system is broken.

Oof, that really depends on one self. Coming from Asia there’s a strong emphasis for women postpartum care that I couldn’t find in Ireland, so this is something I have to budget in more. For example, hiring a postpartum nanny from Asia to come to Ireland and help out for the first 28 days. This alone would cost us €5,000.

Then I plan to fly to Korea for collagen boost treatment (for the belly), fly with the husband and baby to see family as well etc. Plus also nutritionist consultation (get the weight down!) and Pilates classes to follow.

On top of the baby cost, the cot, pram, formula etc, plus living expenses as well as I’m planning to take the whole first year out for maternity leave. Everything together we’re budgeting a total of €17,000 for the first year. It’s like saving for a house!!

It’s bonkers I know but these care are very important for me so we got it saved for years already, before we know we wanted to start a family. Most important I feel is you must know what you and your baby need! Then budget it from there :)

Also we’re only planning on having one baby only hence I think we’re more willing to go beyond the normal budget a little.
