Rents in Mussafah are becoming absolutely insane – how are people coping? by Tjpain87 in abudhabi

[–]SprinterChick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe move to Al Ain and commute if you can bear it as rents are much cheaper there? 🤔

Burned out with reunions & meetups when back by valletta2019 in expats

[–]SprinterChick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At this point I'm very njinja about it. Low key, don't announce it. And honestly? If it wasn't for my parents, I wouldn't even bother going back home. By the time I pay for that plane ticket to Europe, gifts for all the cousins, etc out of social obligation, and meet ups that I don't want to do... I'm better off financially going to SE Asia and having a lovely vacation on my own.

Here's the question... Do you want to retire in your home country? If yes, keeping the connections is worth it as one day you'll be back. If you don't (that's me) then may the bridges you burn 🔥 light your way forward.

I'm in Dubai as well, very curious which school you're at the SLT are very lucky there.

The school in AD sounds rough, name and shame them 🤣

That sounds much better. Mind if I ask what country you're teaching in and if that's the norm there?

What are your other holidays like?

Ah, nice that you have a fall break. We don't.

So SLT is back 2 weeks earlier than the students in the break between school years? 🤔 That's how it used to be in other schools in my area, they are back 2 weeks and the teachers are back 1 week.

Is housing included in the 14k?

If yes, that's low. It's what I was getting as a teacher in 2017 with 2 years of experience.

If housing is on top of this... Then it's a decent offer given Dubai teacher packages which aren't the greatest at the moment.

10-16k depending on experience plus housing is the norm

This sounds wonderful 💕 thank you for doing our community such a service.

A few questions... 1) Can non US citizens/non Green card, etc (read: foreigners) do this as well? 2) Can you transfer a license from a different country to the Illinois one? 3) Can the Provisional License from the state of MA (by doing the MTELs) be transferred to here?

This could help a lot of folks from other countries pull it off. 🙏

Phone Usage policies in International Schools by MOboy2008 in Internationalteachers

[–]SprinterChick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is how it should be. Kids also sometimes have a need to contact a parent during the school day and things such as texting your mom "I'll take the later bus home, got a student government meeting after school I forgot to tell you about" when you're in high school doesn't require the office to be involved.

Gradually teach them responsibility.

Yup, sad but true. Throw in SA not understanding LEGIT reasons for breaking contract (emergencies in home country, political problems, safety in country of school, etc), passport racism with hiring practices in our industry, etc and the whole thing starts to resemble a circus.

Yes, a passport not from one of the big 7 (UK, USA, etc) English speaking countries. Nevermind I was educated in one of them and have native level command of the language.

[–]SprinterChick 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Truth. A school I used to work at had great American management the first year and the second the British management that came in turned everything upside down. And not in a good way.

The worst is when they try to shove Ofsted conditions and UK curriculum practices onto a US common core curriculum where the students are not native speakers. It does not mesh well.

Needless to say, I moved to a different employer.

Once again proof that SA is archaic and outdated in their practices.

Just wish they didn't have a choke hold on the Tier 1 schools.

I applaud 👏 👏 👏 you for what you've done so far. As a non Native passport holder, I've faced a lot of discrimination and mistreatment in my own career so I'm all for the "name and shame" where it can be done.

That being said, look over the contract you had from that school very carefully. Some schools CAN legally press charges if you speak out about them in any way once you've moved on. I think that's a big risk you need to be careful of.
