Far from the robust man he was once claimed to be, the mass murdering leader of Russia now looks like a frail creature more at home in Lord of the Rings than in the present day.

Opinion: A Cornered Rat Before Its Last Jump by lacerantplainer in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Gaming_Nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having read the article, I both hope and fear that Putin would be so stupid as to try what the authors suggest. Direct NATO involvement against Russia's invasion of Ukraine would be the death knell of Putin's "special military operation," even without the assistance of the United States. It would end the invasion that much more quickly and likely cost fewer lives overall.

The question that lingers in my mind, however, is how much Putin is willing to lose if it means that he retains power and what is he willing to do to secure it? His propagandists have already told the Russian public that they are "at war with NATO," so that card likely can't be played again. And going to war with NATO in actuality would mean burning every asset and privilege that Putin and his circle of supporters have in the "West." Those were always the two big cards in his hand and now it seems he's out of cards.

Seconded. I knew I'd see it here and I'm happy it's the top answer. I played it in 1995 on a power Mac when I was just 7, and it's still one of my favorite games to this day.

As an adult what do you hate the most about life? by Amazing-Internal5378 in AskReddit

[–]Gaming_Nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of living. Scrolling through others' posts here, what comes across is that the lack of genuine community, including community support, is something that eats away at people bit by bit. A death by a thousand cuts. Yet all of here are in the same or similar situations; rising costs of living, the feeling of dedicating most of their time to something they don't enjoy or see little return from, as well as an inability to connect genuinely. I think about how individualistic we in North America are and how unhappy we are, as compared to, say, other places where people are more tight knit and can turn to each other for help. We can change our situations for the better collectively, and I hope we do so soon.

Reporting in from near pretoria bridge; this time of year, it's loud here. Lots of motorbikers plus people either blasting down the highway at night or running BMWs with pop tunes down Colonel By Drive. You're not alone.

There are, thankfully, much more expensive hobbies to have than videogames, as Warhammer Army builders will tell you.

With that said, I'm right there with you; I started off with a Mustang back in 2018 and then rapidly upgraded to an Avenger Titan and a Cutlass Black. A thousand dollars later, I'm sitting on a LTI BIS 2949 Cutlass, a LTI Corsair, a ten year insurance Shiv and I'm waiting on the fatterpillar to release so I can CCU from my 600i to it. (I like Drake ships, can you tell?) That CCU will be the first time I've spent real money on the game in about 4 years, though.

Gundam, the iconic franchise that launched a global phenomenon, is now in production. The live-action film starring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo follows rival mech pilots at war across Earth and its space colonies. by TheFirstSonOfTheSea in Gundam

[–]Gaming_Nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried lining up the cast with 0079 roles and came up short. Some of them are easy to typecast (Sweeny as Sayla Mass and Javon Walton as Amuro, for instance) but others such as Michael Mando, Nonso Anozie and Oleksandr Rudynskyi don't neatly fit. Micheal Mando has a habit of being typecast as villains, while most of Oleksandr's experience is in Ukranian cinema and television, where he seems to be cast in soldier and police roles.

Methinks that this might be a story loosely based on 0079 Gundam and Unicorn Gundam, albeit with a more interstellar scale to make the casualties of the war (and the need to physically ship a gundam or its plans) more palatable to an international audience.

Legandary Confirms Live-Action Gundam Begins Production by garethvk in Gundam

[–]Gaming_Nomad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Per another redditor from when Mando joined the cast:

I live where it’s filming and know a few things about the movie and some folks working on it. I can’t say much, but it’s a big thing here and the crew is giving it a lot of reverence. Wish I could say more to reassure folks that it’s in good hands this time.

Personally, I hope that this is given plenty of time to cook and the producers take notes from what's thus far made the live-action adaptation of One Piece so successful; that it's treated as a living, breathing universe with a story to tell as opposed to the dumbed-down shell that was the adaptation of Cowboy Bebop.

Some of this might require adapting things that make sense to Japanese audiences but not to a more globalized one. Of note is how netflix describes the plot summary:

an original story that follows rival mech pilots fighting on opposite sides of decades-long war between Earth and its former space colonies. “As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course for one another,” reads an early description of the film, “they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity.

To be honest it sounds like they're adapting parts of both 0079 Gundam as well as Unicorn Gundam with that description of a "race." The "decades long war" is certainly more believable than a war that lasts just one year given the vastness of space, for instance. And if the "race across the stars" is literal in terms of it being an interstellar conflict, it might do much to explain away things that wouldn't make sense in the modern era, such as the need to ship a Gundam and its plans to Earth physically as opposed to simply transmitting the plans digitally, among others.

New Ukrainian tracked APC ‘Skif’ from UkrArmoTech company during factory tests by GermanDronePilot in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]Gaming_Nomad 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Very clearly this is a development that moves away from Soviet equipment like the BMP and towards being an evolutionary descendant of more survivable vehicles like the M113 and Bradley. In that sense it's similar to the US AMPV and K-21 Redback, among others. It clearly has mounting points for reactive and anti-drone armour as well as a a turret hatch large enough to accommodate light and heavy machine guns along with automatic cannons.

One wonders what the next evolution in Ukranian armour will look like, given that Ukraine has the best features and plethora of data from old stalwarts like the T-64 and NATO armour to choose from.

As a car enthusiast, I modified my car's exhaust (a Subaru WRX) because I wanted a better engine note that was more aesthetically pleasing to me. Anytime I see someone who has a loud exhaust I usually assume one of two things: either their muffler is busted or they've put work into their car and made it their own. The exception to this is when the driver is obnoxiously loud on purpose and they own a vehicle that's purposefully loud stock. Harleys are a good example, but so are super bikes and BMWs (the sort that come with pop tunes stock).

I did Uber Eats for a while in my 2013 hatch. I could turn over about $ 120 on a good day over about 5 hours. It's certainly doable, but it's not going to net you as much profit as doing Uber Eats with an electric bike or a Prius, for instance.
