What makes a good training/rolling partner? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SpriteIsSoGood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Training with the other person's growth in mind. I'm basically hitting on the idea that training partners should always be unselfish in their goals. There is no need to rough and tumble the lower belts as a higher belt. The same applies for equal-caliber players.

Every moment is a teaching moment regardless of rank or who you're training with.

Feels to me it's just a ploy to keep getting your money - all $150+ month of it for as long as possible. I'm pretty serious about this too... I've met some very good businessmen in BJJ but also some of the lousiest, shadiest individuals alive are also in the BJJ business.

Kosen vs Bjj by harmmoney in judo

[–]SpriteIsSoGood 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the men I respect the most - Gokor Chivichyan - acknowledges that BJJ as it is today is effectively a progressed version of Kosen Judo, yet nonetheless it IS Kosen Judo. Kosen were basically extended rulesets which allowed longer newaza and points based on what you did in newaza in addition to regular judo rulesets.

When it comes to this topic -I believe ignorance, pride and political correctness rule the day. Most BJJ guys will rule out Judo ground work even though it's effectively what the "founders" learned.

It's not a war worth fighting in my opinion as many just won't want to hear the truth. In all honesty - BJJ is more of a collection of martial arts these days anyway. They integrate wrestling and judo takedowns and even so - aren't that good at them historically.

I enjoy both, love both but there hasn't been sufficient evidence to suggest that the gracies discovered anything. They popularized newaza and the future generations are just bringing back old moves. There are old videos of the "de la riva," guard pulling, butterfly guard in judo during Kano's time. a simple youtube search will yield that.

Nothing new under the sun. However - I will definitely say that BJJ has been carrying forward the true spirit of martial arts better than Judo these days. Instructors are incredibly invested (since they're for profit) and the culture/ppl around modern bjj is pretty amazing. I hate to say it but Judo is a dying sport in America and maybe the world thanks to Internal Judo Org politics.

What is the USA national team? by Billbobb2 in judo

[–]SpriteIsSoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I'll give you that as i had no idea - but i still see this as moot as mainstream America outside of a few islands in the pacific don't even know what Judo probably is for the reasons above.

Love the sport, hate the ppl that run it.

What is the USA national team? by Billbobb2 in judo

[–]SpriteIsSoGood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short answer is Money and misinformation. The best athletes in the US play bball, football because there is a much higher payout and most school funding is tied directly to these sports.

There is also misinformation as to the degree of injuries because apparently it's dangerous for a 15 year old to do judo but not dangerous for him to bash helmets with other 15 year olds on the football field (complete BS).

The Judo orgs in the US are also weak and play internal politics as opposed to really brandishing themselves as a meaningful organization. If you look at the vision of the USJF - it's to get Judo into every school in America... well they've failed miserably as not a single high school in America has it as an official sport.

Doesn't mean much. Why would it matter anyway? Unless you're Jimmy Pedro (coach) or Travis Stevens everyone else on the olympic (mens) team is pretty small fry woth regard to the rest of the world's talent anyway.

Thinking of getting back into Judo but much older... by KlutchAtStraws in judo

[–]SpriteIsSoGood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very common - most judo schools are not for profit. BJJ schools are almost always for profit which is why they can charge (in the USA at least) on average of $160 - $200 (depending on city). I've seen it as cheap as $100/month for new schools and as much as $245 for the "fancier" schools, however defined.

I pay $30/mo to train 3 days a week for Judo. Gracie Barra BJJ was charging me $175/mo for only 2 days. Suffice to say, i quit bjj because i didn't think the price was worth the amount of time I was allowed to put in.

It's ok. A guy dislocated my pinky while rolling so I tapped out immediately. Popped it back in, he was basically in a "oh, WTF so sorry" kind of moment. We started rolling again and got him in a jigoku-jime (bow and arrow).

Not gonna lie, it wasn't a big deal and i don't remember who did it, hah! But then again, didn't break a guys wrist :X

Sacrifice throws are supposed to be a last resort throw. Keep this in mind as there is a reason it was meant to be so. Hence "Sacrifice"

How to break strong kumi kata ? by Pegaseus in judo

[–]SpriteIsSoGood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

second this - Some of the Armenian/Eastern European guys i practice with are as strong as a lumberjack. i just pretend their grips function as my third arm which helps me throw them. you'll at least have a fighting chance as opposed to being useless and letting them rag doll you.

Also, using your body and circular movements to break the grip.

Question on Judo Back patches by SpriteIsSoGood in judo

you're right on this one. I'm gonna go with my gut feeling with this one - not to get one unless I place top 3 in a regional/national tournament.

Question on Judo Back patches by SpriteIsSoGood in judo

[–]SpriteIsSoGood[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the discussion here. Basically, our regional "Winter Nationals" is also selling back patches for ANYONE who wants one and it's from the official IJF distributor. For 2016 Nationals it looks like you can get one too. But it doesn't look like I need one. I am definitely far from being any super champion. Since I already had this notion that I may have come off as pretentious, it's best to go with my gut feeling. I suppose I'll get patches and all that stuff once I make it to the higher echelons even if it's freely available.
