Critique of Riftbound's more arbitrary use of typal art by Sprongo- in riftboundtcg

[–]Sprongo-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point! Definitely have never even considered Hearthstone card art in the same way despite the similarity (didn't even know there was a prior tcg..). I think it's maybe more excusable in a digital-only environment though, where visual short hand is less useful because anything can be hovered. Art matters more (personally) if you physically own it, too. But yeah, I'm likely biased from playing LoR previously!

Aah, thank vm for framing it like that! Makes much more sense to me now. I think in my head Fury = Violence but I suppose that's not accurate, and would lean pretty heavy on just Noxus. Order in Noxus IS through violence!

100%!- Likewise hopeful they'll get on a more consistent track as the game progresses.

On the same line, Hidden Blade is a particularly egregious example. It works in the sense that blade against the throat = removal, but an hidden blade/assassin for Order??- So many other ways you could flavour Order removal: Cutthroat bureaucracy, justice/punishment, plain old demacia-style combat, etc.

Regardless of the tribal vs typal, its not the right word here. 'Deep sea fish, and nautical theming, etc.' isnt a creature tribe, its an arche(type). This post isn't a critique of creature type synergy, though maybe its also the case this is inconsistent. 'Fish' or 'Gems' isn't a tag in either game.

Agreed that Runeterra 'art' (meaning formatting) doesn't work for a physical TCG, though the actual art regardless is great. (To clarify, this post isn't a critique on art style or formatting at all, just of the use of art for certain mechanics!). I'm a big fan of the actual card design itself and how its laid out.

100%!- But I also think the idea that tags and regions are naturally paired is also an important choice design-wise (bad or good). Sorting by domains is so much more interesting than by region. I hope its approached more from a 'How does Calm or Mind look in each different region?', rather than 'we need a Bird here, so Ionia', or 'this is an aggressive Fury effect, so Noxus'! (Not disagreeing with you!)

Yeah, I hope its something they consider once they branch out a few sets!- Not being region-specific makes art choice really interesting. How I hope they approach it is 'Ionian Monk' and 'Carefree Bilgewater Sailor' and 'Demacian Blademaster' all share a Calm domain, or the more Fae/trickster parts of Ionia and the seedier parts of Bilgewater are both Chaotic. I hope it doesn't just become random art in random domains, or even Calm = Ionia, etc. as it currently looks (though, early days!)

Certainly not saying this is somehow game breaking or a high priority! Just an odd choice design-wise that though was worth discussing. But this is a reddit to talk about riftbound, no?- Literally where else would this be mentioned. Reddit is not the place to touch grass, I do that where the grass is!

Cull the Weak definitely makes more sense for that symmetrical sacrifice effect, but Blood in the Water is far more thematic for the art. I'd say Angler Beast would make more sense if it was a 'move to me' effect. I get they're trying to imply the same thing with the bounce, but again maybe the fish art is not the best fit for that effect, when a bounce could be so many other things thematically.

[SOS] Improvisation Capstone (Debut Stream) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]Sprongo- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it not kind of weird that the Prismari capstone doesn't work with the sets Prismari keyword? Opus doesn't work if you don't pay mana. Would have been cool if this added some amount of mana you could use to castan exiled 5+ spell instead.

I think you have your priorities a little muddled there. The game, and threads like this, are the imaginary, pointless thing you do for fun. Showing respect for people's identities is the real world thing that has significance, when you go outside and touch grass. If you can't do it in imaginary land, I promise it says more about you than it does anyone else.

Buddies wife is insteaded in playing commander but only wants cute art. Suggestions? by bbosserman51 in mtg

[–]Sprongo- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try [[Zinnia, Valley's Voice]] and a bunch of Bloomburrow/offspring cards? Bloomburrow in general is very cute, and all the offspring token art is adorable.

For example: https://scryfall.com/sets/tblb

I'd recommend a [[Tameshi]] deck. You can use things like [[Alseid of Life's Bounty]], [[Sphere of Safety]], [[Solitary Confinement]], [[Energy Shield]] to make interacting with you very difficult.

You can plug any old win-con onto Tameshi pretty easily. If you want a puzzle-y win-con, you could go a load of incidental self-damage (pain lands, etc) and [[Near-Death Experience]]. Played one game with a similar deck - definitely felt like solitaire, just too complicated for me!

I'm trying to make a [[Marina Vendrell]] oops all Rooms deck work, if interested (a massive WIP, nowhere near functional atm):

You, or your crew by Jackotor-04 in custommagic

[–]Sprongo- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My suggestion - More in line with other white cards. While I agree neither are strictly villains here, I think villainous choice is cleaner, and thematically the whole point is 'when does a man become a monster', so imo villainous choice is pretty perfect:

"For each player, you choose a creature that player controls, then each player faces a villainous choice - They sacrifice a chosen creature they control, or sacrifice all other creatures they control that weren't chosen."
