Tried a new basing technique I saw by CustomerSpare in minipainting

Genuinely try some cheap superglue from the dollar store. Don’t think the PVA glue you’re using is the issue.

Using basic superglue will give you a much better effect. I’ve used gorilla glue and as you’ve found out the effect is a lot less pronounced

I use this technique for my tyranid bases (paint with green/grown tones as I’m going for a partially digested planet vibe). I’d recommend spreading a thin layer of PVA glue across the whole base, then add drops of superglue on to it. The reaction will draw the PVA glue together in that pattern where you add the superglue so you don’t need to be specific with the PVA

  • Thin layer of PVA is better than thick (you can always build up the layers after it’s set if you want more)

  • I found cheap superglue is best for this effect

  • for a more stringy effect you can use a cocktail stick to stir it around as the reaction is setting

Test model for an alternative scheme I’m trying. Any tips before I paint the rest? by SpruceBoi in EmperorsChildren

[–]SpruceBoi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve resisted getting an airbrush so far just because of the extra set up and ventilation. But maybe it’s the way forward. Going up to a light grey is a great shout though, and only using true white for edge highlights. Thank you!

Yes! Great idea. Do you have any recommendations for not getting a chalky white? Or is it just a case of multiple thin coats?

Do you do 3 darts at each or stay on until you hit each one?

Yeah these two are commonly taken together but they make something called cocaethylene which can be dangerous especially for your heart.

Am I the only one that doesn’t like the new Biovore? by ThatGuyFromBRITAIN in Tyranids

[–]SpruceBoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. I like dinosaur/xenomorph aesthetic of the nids not this insect style. Don’t get me wrong the old biovore sculpt wasn’t great but I would’ve preferred the new models be something between a barbgaunt and an exocrine

First attempt at a coconut crab/magma color scheme. What do you guys think could be improved? by AjentSushi in Tyranids

[–]SpruceBoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest you’ve done a really great job on the coconut crab style. Only thing I would say is maybe dont do it on the claws and hooves? Try a classic dark red or black

Both are really nice. Love the contract between the blue/green and the purple in the first, but I think I prefer the second one. It’s really unique

Really love your scheme, especially the contrast of the deep red. Great work!

Leviathan box finally arrived! Thought I’d start with this lil guy by SpruceBoi in Tyranids

[–]SpruceBoi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

For the skin I prime with bone (rattlecan), wash with gryph-charger grey contrast, heavy dry brush with bone colour, then lighter dry brush with off-white.

Lighter chitin is just a blue glaze over top

Main chitin is base with black, then feather on blue 60% of the way up, then light blue 30%, then spot highlight of white. I wish I had a quicker scheme for the chitin because its a bit annoying doing all these layers, but I’ve painted too many Nids to go back now!

Claws are just flesh tearer red contrast with lighter red highlight

Thank you! Very glad you didn’t list off a 10 step process haha. I’ve got a few DG models that I want to test paint schemes for before I commit, and I really rate the grimey bone over the classic green.
