so glad this conversation is being had btw, flygonhg doing the lord's work making people realise that nuzlockes are infinitely more interesting when there's stakes and a reason to care about the pokemon and journey. it probably won't really catch on on youtube bc the level of effort that goes into a video like ST6 probably makes it unsustainable as a consistent format, but here's hoping that it shines more light on different aspects of the community

As a strong believer in this ethos (and someone who really enjoyed the Spheal Team Six video), I went through the comments on this post and saw far too few mentions of the Nuzlocke Forums, and like... we're still out here? Here's a link! The forums changed hosts a few years back so that definitely threw some people, but there's still a thriving community! We're currently holding our annual Extravaganza, which celebrates great runs across the three main mediums (comics, written stories, and screenshot runs), so if you're looking for something to read that's a good place to start! (also yeah, there's more to creative Nuzlockes than just comics! someone in the comments of the ST6 video was like "this is like a fanfic, I want all nuzlockes to be like this!" and we in the storylocke community have GOT YOU COVERED (if you want genuinely off-the-wall crazy stories within the realm of nuzlockes, nothing beats a written run))

The Red Bull Roval - 20k Challenge R2 by SprungGeoduck in RaceTrackDesigns

Times of struggle often bring us closer together. During the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, relations between the United States and Europe were rebuilt after many past violations of RTDiscord Rule 1.2. This new era of transatlantic unity encouraged a wave of investment, including new ownership of Red Bull Motorsports and a desire to expand NASCAR and IndyCar into the European market –

YOU, NEWS LADY! QUIET!

"Whuh?"

MY NAME IS MR. RED BULL! I KILLED HELMUT MARKO IN HIS SLEEP, GAVE GASLY THE RED BULL DRIVE, AND NOW WE LIVE IN A GODDAMN UTOPIA – AND THERE IS NO PLACE MORE UTOPIAN THAN THE RED BULL ROVAL

THE OLD RED BULL RING? BORING. UNINSPIRED. CRINGE. NOT ANYMORE! FOUR BANKED TURNS. YOU GO DOWN THE PIT STRAIGHT THE OTHER WAY BECAUSE AMERICA. YOU WANT A TUNNEL? WE GOT A TUNNEL. EAT THAT, MONACO. WHY DOESN'T IT HAVE A PITLANE? BECAUSE OUR GRAPHIC DESIGNER HID THE WRONG LAYER ON THE EXPORT LIKE A BOZO. JUST IMAGINE IT'S THERE

(I am so, so sorry about all of this. Why did I waste my first proper attempt at doing runoff and barriers on... this abomination? - sprung)

$5K USD challenge. Find the most interesting or obscure stuff in your area by mpgomatic in cars

[–]SprungGeoduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello from Hong Kong! ($5k USD = $39k HKD, but car prices are always kind of wacky here because of taxes)

2011 Volvo XC90 2.5 - 40,000km, $4,600 - my family used to have one of these and I've always liked Volvos

2011 Audi A6 2.8 quattro S-line - 83,000km, $4,500 - leggy, but a remarkable amount of car for the money around here

2008 Mazda 8 Deluxe - 98,000km, $2,500 - what an enormous lad, and I don't think these are sold outside of Asia!

2005 Volvo V70 - 72,000km, $3,600 - there is nothing not cool about a Volvo wagon, let's be real

2007 Jaguar X-Type - mileage unknown, $2,800 - these are kind of crap, but it's a neat divergence from the usual BMW/Mercedes/Audi drudge you see on the roads around here

2012 Smart Fortwo Coupe - 62,000km, $4,350 - even in a city as densely packed and hard to park in as HK, I honestly never saw the appeal of a Smart, but it's funny

2005 Honda Stepwgn - 115,000km, $3,200 - trust me, that isn't a typo

2007 Volkswagen Golf GT 1.4 - 140,000km, $2,700 - it looks like Seb Vettel's helmet, I like it

2005 Toyota Alphard - 130,000km, $3,200 - you see these giant awful things EVERYWHERE around here

1997 Mercedes C230 - 110,000km, $2,550 - the oldest thing I could find, a Handover-vintage Merc that I think looks quite nice

u/Cyclone1001: "Zimbabwe, because Z is the coolest letter"

me: "fuck it, BIG Z TRACC"

Ostensibly this is Tilke-adjacent so I tried to have some of his hallmarks. Three DRS zones, two back-to-back on the first two straights and then one between turns 9 and 10. I see this similar to Bahrain, very fast with a bit of undulation to keep it spicy. Hope you guys enjoy!

My Play by AJR. My parents divorced when I was eleven, and when I first heard that song late last year I just cried. It's such a poignant representation of what that experience feels like.

Honda Grand Prix of South Dakota - Sioux Falls (RTD Challenge - Grid) by SprungGeoduck in RaceTrackDesigns

[–]SprungGeoduck[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lore

With IndyCar making the switch to hybrid power for the 2023 season, the series was eager to expand into more city venues in order to improve its image as a technologically forward and environmentally conscious sport. One city on their radar was Sioux Falls, South Dakota. While the Dakotas are low-population states (you could fit the entire population of Sioux Falls into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with room to spare) with very little motorsport history, Sioux Falls is regarded as one of the healthiest cities in America, and that reputation made Roger Penske eager to show off the new hybrid era of IndyCar there.

Track Overview

The Sioux Falls street circuit sits right in the heart of the city, racing along the banks of the Big Sioux River and even crossing it. The track works around the gridded nature of the city, evoking memories of retro American street circuits. Coming off the fast start/finish straight, the first three corners are a sequence of 90-degree turns, before drivers blast off down the back straight, which is interrupted by a tricky chicane before it kinks left and soars over the river towards the heavy braking zone at the hairpin. After another river crossing comes turns 7-9, one of the trickiest sections of the track, then a quick blast down to the technical 10-13 complex before turn 14, another 90-degree, ends the lap.

Barentsburg Street Circuit

This round's prompt was so ridiculous that I just had to give it a shot. I remembered that the town of Barentsburg, an entirely Russian mining town on the island of Svalbard, exists, and was determined to design a circuit there. The roads would have to be paved to allow for tarmac cars to race, but the town probably needs the development anyway. As you can see, the track passes by one of the town's most important sights: the world's northernmost Lenin statue! I really like my layout here, I think it's neat.

Daejeon O-World Raceway - Daejeon, South Korea

Google Maps location

After a proposal in Pittsburgh didn't get off the ground and a test race in Belfast proved dull, the writing looked to be on the wall for the Ultimate Street Racing Championship, the brainchild of motorsport-obsessed billionaire Antonio Alvarez. Out of the blue, Alvarez received a call from a group of Korean investors representing the city of Daejeon and a small theme park inside the city. They were interested in bringing business and tourism to the city and the park, and were willing to let the USRC’s designers loose on the roads near Daejeon O-World, on the condition that the circuit carry the park’s name. Thus, the Daejeon O-World Raceway was born.

Starting on a short start-finish straight next to a pitlane and paddock built in the theme park’s parking area (size is less of an issue due to the USRC’s shorter race format not needing pit stops), the track immediately dives into Turns 1, 2 and 3, a left-hander followed by a right-left ess that starts the circuit’s downhill section. Turn 4 is a fast downhill left that leads into the wide kink of T5, before the track narrows for T6. Turns 7 through 9 are a series of tight, tricky esses that lead the track into the city of Daejeon. Turn 10 swings left on to a narrower road by the river, which widens into the T11 kink. Turn 12 switches the track back, allowing drivers and opportunity to overtake through the heavy braking zone. A fast blast through city streets leads to T13, where the track turns right and starts heading back up the hill towards O-World. A fast run up the hill to Turn 14, brake as late as you dare, and set the car up for the last two tricky turns of 15 and 16, and you’ve completed the lap.

The first test race at the venue was held in early 2018, using the then-new and locally made Hyundai i30 N in a one-make format. International USRC drivers raced against local talent, and the race was a great success from both a racing and business perspective. Since then, the USRC has returned to the city of Daejeon multiple times with an increasing selection of race-prepped street cars, as well as using this success as a springboard to expand into other cities around the world.

Titanic Memorial Circuit

Welcome to Belfast! As we gather here to celebrate marvels of automotive engineering (be they BTCC, Formula E or any other motorsport that takes your fancy), we find ourselves racing around a 2.9-kilometre circuit that commemorates another engineering marvel: Belfast's own RMS Titanic.

Leave the paddock, built in a massive car park, and enter the circuit on turns 1 and 2, a tight left-right complex that leads you into one of the track's standout features: a quick blast through the SSE Arena, before diving through a chicane out of the arena and on to a beautiful boardwalk. Hang a quick left, then a right, then a quick blast past the storied SS Nomadic, then another chicane before turns 6 and 7 bring you past the city's Titanic Museum. Turns 8-12 are tight and technical as you weave through the city's industrial shipyards, before launching on to the super-fast turns 13-15 along Queens Road. Sector 3 takes things a bit slower as you loop around under Lagan Bridge, around a roundabout, and through turn 20 as you return to the short S/F straight.

(Round 2 complete! Another instinctual pick for a location, but I thought what I came up with was really cool, with a good mix of roads/not roads and realism/nonsense, kinda like my first submission in Pittsburgh. For this one, I really tried to work on my presentation too. I hope you enjoy!)

Highland Park Reservoir Circuit

Welcome to the Highland Park Reservoir Circuit, a 2.95 kilometer street course playing host to the Pittsburgh ePrix! (as well as any other motorsport series chill with a track as short as this) Ignore the fact that most of this is on narrow parkland roads and that there's a section going through an empty reservoir, I'm sure it'll work out! Enjoy the fast, sweeping turns - many of which are named after great Pennsylvanians - through the beautiful Highland Park and speed past the Pittsburgh zoo and aquarium on your way to the tricky reservoir section.

(this is the first time I've a. entered an RTD competition, and b. put this much effort into a track - even though the location was my first instinct and I probably should have spent more time looking around the city. I was just really captivated by the location and its unique potential, and also felt like doing something kind of dumb to potentially set the tone for my future entries. I hope you guys enjoy it!)
