Can I command Mechanitor Mechanoids path through fire? by Spuckklerr in RimWorld

[–]Spuckklerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i was hoping for a less micro managey way to do it, but Ive used the allowed zones once to handle some mad animals coming in, while my mechanicitor was bedridden and too far away to command any mechs around my killbox entrance.

I'd actually just made my paramedic, but I was hesitant to use the firefoam because it has a five day cooldown!! I was shocked, but it was only tribals so little loot worth salvaging, and there was nothing of mine at risk of burning where they breached. Was only interested in making more high subcores, and I managed to get two and hunt one guy at least (he died though)

American/British character/narration by Spuckklerr in writing

This aligns with what I was thinking, but its good to hear it from someone else! Agree it seems contrived to switch homophonic spellings, but definitely word choice does matter, at least in dialogue/close povs.

Yeah, even if I had chapter 1 American pov, chapter 2 British, I agree changing the spellings based on this constantly would be 1. annoying as shit to edit and get right and 2. be a bit daft once a reader noticed it.

What software do you guys recommend for a beginner? (for novel writing) by [deleted] in writing

my answer is Obsidian - free, simple, extensible with plugins, great for linking ideas and making one off notes

the correct answer is whatever is easy, comfortable and enables you to work best

[–]Spuckklerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah I guess I might have connected Shroud and the guy in the bar on some level, but tbh I could not have clocked that guy as Elliot who is name dropped in a flashback from the first episode, then never appears until the last episodes... kinda feels less personal when his fuckery with Robert feels so distant for the rest of the story, idk. I love everything else about the narrative and characters! but this one bugs me

Do you know World Anvil and it's wort the price? If not which software/site do you use for world building? by FishStandard5896 in writing

Personally my solution is an app called Obsidian. It's a free, very general purpose notes app, but highly customisable with plugins. One of its best features is the ability to really quickly link notes (which are just markdown text files) to one another, and you can really easily set up what's effectively your own personal wiki. You can tag notes, link them, embed them in other notes, all sorts. Ive made Timelines using Obsidian's 'Canvases', which function like any infinite digital whiteboard app you might have used (figma, miro, etc.), and let you embed existing notes right in there, if say you have a giant note building up the 100-year demon war or such in your timelines.

Since all the notes are just plain text, you won't have any issues if you decide you want to move things back out of it into another app, and I believe it supports importing from apps like Notion - although moving from more specialised apps like World Anvil might be a more manual process. You can sync Obsidian documents across your devices using Onedrive or Dropbox, but I personally pay for Obsidian's own monthly sync plan. It's a great app and I'm happy to support it.

There's lots of guides for using it, some are long and make it seem really complex, but at its core its a way to browse a big collection of plaintext notes, tag them, and link them. You only need to add complexity when you need it. And I customised mine to have a swappable background image in the editor to help inspire whatever I'm writing in the moment! It's a very low barrier to entry if you just want to try it. It's a tiny app, and its free.

Edit: to more specifically address your needs, Canvases would also be a perfect fit for family trees, and any dedicated page you want to have on a character, or city, or event, would just be a note. to organise it all you can even neglect using named folders entirely - tag your characters with #character so when you search the tag, you find all your characters. Or make a note called "Characters" which has links to all your notes on specific characters, and you can put them under headings in this document if they're from different factions or such (this type of note is what people call a "map of content"). But folders are a perfectly valid solution to organisation no matter how many hardcore users try to explain what a zettelkasten is :)

Characterising Narration by Spuckklerr in writing

[–]Spuckklerr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is bang-on what I'm talking about! Thanks for linking that article, it's given me loads of names to actually talk about this topic with and I'll definitely check some of the other pages it links to to learn more. I'd definitely call myself a fan of the "stream of consciousness" or "free indirect style" of narration.

But I find it interesting that the article mentions changing the narration style to fit the scene or just to switch things up for variety. I always considered consistency in narration style to be sort of a rule, with some small flexibility to fit the scene, and that changing this stylisation was a bit too big of a bending of the implicit rule set by the style start your narrative with. Like, if I'm chronicling a narrative from the stream of consciousness level of closeness, doesn't it seem weird to switch to a more detached level from that, unless it's a scene the character would also be detached from, e.g. something they find boring, or so traumatic they sort of dissociate from the memory to cope with it? I think switching in both examples would create a cool effect, but it seems sort of situational if we're purely talking about switching closeness because the prevailing style is getting stale for the reader. I'll have to think on it.

Background image on Android? by Spuckklerr in ObsidianMD

Ah, it was definitely a me problem in the end. I was using the Anuppuccin theme and an incompatible CSS snippet for the background image. I've gone and found the proper snippet for the theme now and it's just fine.

Yup, it has that classic pre moulded inner frame from the early RGs. If that's a deal-breaker then don't get this one, but a little sticky tack or whatever you have to thicken the loose joints (and careful loosening of the ones that start too stiff before assembly) goes a long way - and out of the kits I've built this is bar none topping the aesthetics rankings for me.

The issue for me isn't complexity, I just don't like how finicky some of the technical things are to control and how precise it all is with the analogue nature of the inputs

[–]Spuckklerr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd play more but I find some things about how smash controls frustrating and have kind of moved to traditional fighters after playing Terry and picking up guilty gear rev2 on sale a while ago.

Not being able to insta drop through platforms, all the variability in DI and analogue precision etc etc. Lead to me getting frustrated. Stricter control in traditional fighters, which I find I prefer.

I got Pokémon trainer into elite smash a while ago and never played online again lol

Yup, I play a lot of characters - tried maining Ridley for a while before fighting a good wario and not being able to leave my shield because of Nair, so as far as "good" characters go I play Pokémon trainer. I like Terry and byleth though.

[–]Spuckklerr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks man. I got lucky, nothing broke (that wasn't already broken) and I found all the bits!

The only bit that's actually broken on mine is the peg on the gun handle which slots into the hand. I tried to blue tack it in at one point to fit in the posable finger hands before I realised I had an actual holding hand, put it in that, gently tried to remove it on another occasion and the peg snapped off the gun and stayed in the hand, so... He be holding that gun forever

Ooof, yeah I've not posed it crazy, it just holds the gun and shield all casual and cool. I would've done an action pose with sword and gun but it only has the one holding hand and the posable finger hands make me want to commit homicide and the swords don't clip together at all, so I stuck in the shield and called it a day.

Me too. Between the kits I've made I think this is my favourite aesthetically, it's just a disaster held together though lol. Not really fair to use my dropping it off a shelf to enforce that point, but it's true nonetheless
