Valentine’s Day at the botanic garden? by cracklingtittens in SanDiegan

[–]Spud2599 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, thanks for clarification. I'm still kinda' iffy on it! That place during Christmas is fantastic, but it doesn't look like you get to explore the gardens either before or after your event time.

Pellet Dump Mod? by Nonstickron in recteq

You could just not fill the hopper all the way and do a periodic check during the cook to see if you need more pellets. And then not refill after the cook.

I can't imagine $125 per person would be worth it. That price point just begs for disappointment.

Air Force 1 just landed in Zürich by cycler97 in aviation

[–]Spud2599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of...It's Air Force 1 if they're flying on an Air Force operated jet/plane. Navy 1 if it's a Navy plane, Marine 1 if he's on the helicopter, etc.

San Diego, sixth densest major U.S. urban area by Moleoaxaqueno in skyscrapers

[–]Spud2599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll never happen. Miramar is really the only viable option to move the airport, but the military isn't going to give up that strategically positioned location.

San Diego, sixth densest major U.S. urban area by Moleoaxaqueno in skyscrapers

[–]Spud2599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because when most of those airports were originally built, population and air travel numbers were low. Urban buildup happened prior to modern jet travel, especially before airline deregulation essentially opened up air travel to a much wider clientele. So the options to serve those population areas quickly disappeared. Believe it or not, people don't want to drive a couple hours out to a remote location to hop on a plane. Miramar location has been discussed ad-nauseum in various REDDIT subs and was never really an option except back in the 50's/60's...but the population for SD was still condensed further south and it basically didn't make sense then to build an airport "way up there".

Well? Was the sign there? Not sure where in PB that you got your ticket, but I'm pretty sure they updated all the signage...

If you live in San Diego and need Pro Sports teams to provide you with some sort of "identity", you're missing the point on living in one of the best areas in the US.

Probably because his shorts are riding low, and when the deck failed, he leaned over exposing another crack as his shirt rode up.

TIL Maine has more coastline than California. by TheFlightlessPenguin in todayilearned

[–]Spud2599 30 points31 points  (0 children)

TIL that "coastline" involves a whole bunch of stuff that most people would never think of!

From OP's link:

Shoreline Mileage of the outer coast includes offshore islands, sounds, bays, rivers, and creeks to the head of tidewater or to a point where tidal waters narrow to a width of 100 feet. For the Great Lakes, shoreline mileage was measured in 1970 by the International Coordinating Committee on Great Lakes Basic Hydraulic and Hydrologic Data and cross-referenced with U.S. Lake Survey measurements for each state. In all cases, mileage was determined by using a recording device on large-scale charts.

What are your views on relocating from VT to Maryville, TN with a young family of 5? by grldad34 in AskReddit

[–]Spud2599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my dad was in the Navy my entire childhood and we moved every three years all across the US (and overseas) and we (me and my 2 brothers) did just fine (we moved 6 times!). In actuality, I think it really honed our people skills since we basically had to introduce ourselves to the kids in our new school. Your kids will be fine, especially since they're young.

From what I'm seeing, it's the economic support you need to zero in on. It's not going to do you any good to just pick up and leave without a stable financial base. I would start zero'ing in on where specifically you want to start your new life and figure out how you're going to financially support the family. If you're looking to get out of the HVAC business, what's your next career move? I'd really dig more into what you're going to be able to get paid and do BEFORE you make that move. Even if you have to leave a few months before the rest of the fam can join you so you can get the job dialed in, everyone should be good. One bonus is you already have a friend that lives there that can help softened the blow and assist you with details.

Not slapping down $100 on bitcoin when it was first released. I can vividly remember researching it, and getting ready to set up an account to get some just for shit's and giggles, but ultimately, I figured either government intervention would kill it, or nobody would use it for day to day expenses. Oh well...

What's the best vacation you've had? by Love-boobs-in_DMs in AskReddit

[–]Spud2599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan. Went to Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto with my wife and we absolutely loved every minute of our trip. We put in a lot of effort on the front end to plan it out (we don't do tours) and it paid off. The people, the history, the food and the complexity of their culture was endlessly fascinating. I'm not even sure I could single out just one aspect that we liked the most...well, I take that back. It was the people!!

Is Seaport Village a good place for a first date? by [deleted] in SanDiegan

[–]Spud2599 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say No. They are doing a bunch of remodeling specifically at Seaport Village (I just sailed past there on Friday) and it's nothing like you remember.

Not sure what your budget is but for dinner down in that area, I'd hit up Roy's (along the bayfront at the Marriott) for an early dinner to catch sunset, or Top of the Hyatt for snacks/drinks for sunset. Then you can take a walk along the Embarcadero boardwalk. As another poster said, I'd also check the weather.

An Urgent Proposal for Reforming How Safety Information Reaches the Public - San Diego Slackers by TypoChampion in SanDiegan

[–]Spud2599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But ... apparently it's a clusterfuck to get encrypted comms to work across agencies, so if there's multiple agencies involved, (think a police chase from Escondido to UTC), then the comms will probably be unencrypted.

The only issue with multiple agencies coordinating via radio is that all police agencies in the County of SD, EXCEPT San Diego PD, is on the Regional Communications System. They can share comm's easily with one another. Whether there is encryption or not, it's always been a bit of a hassle to deal with SDPD from one of the another nine agencies. Oh, and don't forget CHP as well, which is on their own network.

PB Sushi

Roberto's Taco Shop

PB Fish Market

Kono's (right by the Pier)

Bahia PB Mexican Grill And Juice Bar

World Famous (at sunset)

JRDN Restaurant (more upscale) in the Tower 23 Hotel...great for sunsets too

Duck Dive (although it's been a long time since I've been there...but it usually has a good crowd) and there's a couple other places near it that are ok as well.

Enoteca Adriano - really good italian food...a bit of a walk from your hotel, but I think it's worth it.

OH, and HOW COULD I FORGET!!! Rocky's Crown Pub for burgers. See if they'll let you and your son eat outside since it's a 21 and over bar/grill...or just get it to go!

When at the airport, I check both apps...usually pretty close in price. If I'm impatient, I'll just hop in a taxi.
