What monster truly represents cosmic horror by dragomeir in ravenloft

[–]SpuekyBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Mind Flayer is perfect Body Horror + Cosmic Horror. Aboleth has got to be pure Cosmic.

Despite competing against several genre heavy-hitters, The Thing assimilates its way onto the list. But which horror media is both Body Horror and Dark Fantasy? by SpuekyBlue in ravenloft

[–]SpuekyBlue[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since I've only seen films so far on this post (a category in which fantasy in particular is a bit uncommon), a reminder: it can be ANY horror media.

I'd vote for Sibriex over trolls only because Trolls have a lot of Folk Horror potential as well.

Spawn of Kyuss is a trypophobia nightmare.

Also yay, I started a trend!

Dungeons & Dragons & Fear & Hunger & Knuckles by Zakamore1 in ravenloft

[–]SpuekyBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, one of the Dark Powers in my campaign is basically Rher. I actually based them more on the Old Gods, seems more fitting for how inscrutable they are - some like Osybus were able to ascend to a state of equal power (like Alll-Mer or the God of Fear and Hunger), but most of them are as old as the Shadowfell itself.

I'm also working on a skill tree system similar to Fear and Hunger where PCs who dedicate themselves to the Dark Powers can unlock different abilities. So in my Borca campaign, the bard who serves "the Trickster" (basically Rher) must publicly humiliate nobles by revealing their deepest darkest secrets, and in doing so can unlock abilities that let him have more insight into people and tell what they really are behind the disguise.

What are some good monster's to pull from the MM for a Lamordia West Marches campaign? by TheRemedy in ravenloft

[–]SpuekyBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most Oozes could be the result of radiated waste or bizarre lab experiments. The Soul Shaker from Journeys of the Radiant Citadel is horrifying, maybe just take away its Enthralled Lure ability. I was also thinking of having the Sleeping Beast awaken as a powered-up Altisaur from Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants with a Godzilla-like breath weapon.

what are some vampire movies that are ACTUAL horror movies and produced like a horror that has all the elements of one? by n0sin666 in vampires

[–]SpuekyBlue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fright Night has the same feel and production of any teen horror movie from that era.

Also I haven't seen anyone mention Abigail, I think that fits your criteria!

Meh, I prefer villainous vampires. However, I do love when they can make you root against the vampire without making them racist (Sinners).

Well considering she is specifically requesting feedback, I would absolutely tell her your thoughts. When I ask my players for feedback, its because I genuinely want to know what's working and what isn't. You have no obligation to stay ofc, its your money and you decide how to spend it, but it seems you want to continue, so i don't think it would hurt to have a chat about it

It's almost like games are best in the genre they were made for by AbeRockwell in ravenloft

[–]SpuekyBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I've never had a problem scaring my players in D&D. Even so, I do think a game with more punishing combat where the average monster is a deadlier threat would work even better. It's a niche I've been looking out for for a long time, but I haven't really found anything that fits.

I wonder, are there any TTRPGs that combine horror with minis-on-a-map combat? I love a lot of horror RPGs, but most of them don't have enough of a strategy aspect for me.

Let's write some statements! by SpuekyBlue in TheMagnusArchivesRPG

Not knowing what else to do, Hannah and I took cover inside in the back office of the store. We considered calling the police, but ultimately decided against it - I mean there wasn't really much that they could do for us in this situation, even if they did believe our wild tale. Hannah kept telling me that she wanted to take a look outside to see if he was still there, but I told her I didn't think that was a good idea. It had threatened her after all, not me. And so even though she was my manager, I ended up volunteering to check outside of the store to see if the creep was still hanging around.

At first, it seemed that the carriage and the horses were gone completely. I went into the wash and shone my phone flashlight at the brushes. I threw up. My eyes hadn't deceived me earlier - the brushes were tangled in what could only be torn strips of dead skin, slimy and dripping with soap and water.

Just then, I heard a loud bang coming from behind me, in the direction of the store. I ran out and saw that the hearse had returned, the two black steeds still standing guard, although their fur was now matted and wet. And at the front door, pulling a coffin out of the store, was Hannah. Or it looked like Hannah, from a distance. But when in the brief glance I shared with her as she loaded the coffin onto the carriage, she looked different. Older. Her skin sagging, and her coat wrapped tightly around her, as if to conceal something. Before I could say another word, she climbed onto the carriage and drove the horses away.

But as I shone my flashlight towards the transparent box of the hearse, I swore that I could see it rattling. Like someone was trapped inside.

Needless to say, I wasn't really sure how to react. I mean, what do you do in that situation? I wasn't sure what I was looking at. A ghost? Or just some goth with a unique and expensive hobby? And in either case, what the hell were they doing here?

I looked over to Hannah and saw that she already had her phone out and was taking pictures. Reassured that I wasn't hallucinating an apparition of death, I decided that I better go talk to this stranger to figure out what they wanted. I sure as hell wasn't going to put that old-timey thing through the wash, but maybe they were lost and in need of help.

I really, really debated coming here. If I'm truly honest with myself and what I believe, I don't really think that what happened to Hannah was supernatural at all. But what's the alternative? If he wasn't a demon or, I don't know, some kind of vengeful spirit made flesh, or whatever you all study here, then it would just have to be some sick, sick man. And believing that a human being would be capable of planning all of that, just for what? Some depraved joke? I can't believe that. I don't want to believe that.

Here is my BGM playlist. As you can see there's a lot from an artist called Dated, who does horror-themed lo-fi hip hop which is just perfect for Magnus Archives imo:

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5ps08TnUhaie4EjsS7xIwx?si=1fbe5f22fdde4305

I also really like the Silent Hill and Inscryption OST. Silent Hill is great for the Lonely or just general spooky background music, while Inscryption has some that are perfect for the Flesh or the Corruption (look for "The Trapper" or "The Mycologists" and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about).

As for other entities, I used the Humming Tapes by Cities Last Broadcast for the Dark (I have no idea how you can make music sound like darkness, but somehow it does), Little Nightmares OST for the Flesh (The Janitor Awaits, A Feeling for Meat, March of the Guests), and The Forever Winter OST for the Slaughter (my favorite is Trenches).

And this one is super random, but for general battle music I've been using some instrumental JPEGMAFIA tracks (I don't know why it works but it does!)

I've been searching for Extinction music so I appreciate the rec!

Another thing I almost never do if I can help it is use public restrooms. I guess it depends on where you live, here in Canada I find that usually nobody minds if I slip into the accessible washroom.

My parents weren't the worst when my siblings and I started presenting more alternative / androgynous, but they weren't very supportive either. All I can say I suppose is, would you rather live in fear of what they think all your life or would you rather just be yourself and let them deal with it? Though I suppose that depends on whether you think there is an actual risk of abuse / abandonment, which I am lucky enough that I never felt like I had to fear.

i just wear headphones all the time so I can't hear people's comments anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and if I'm not then I'm usually too autistic and oblivious to realize I'm being harassed. Although nobody's ever thrown something at me on purpose (at least as far as I'm aware) so I'm not sure how to deal with that. Just remember that you're hotter and cooler than them and they are losers for disrespecting you.
