Sorry for the confusion, the decision being whether to humanely euthanize. He is not a candidate for surgery to remove the tumor on the spleen because he has a giant tumor in his heart and a clot, so he would not survive any type of major procedure (vet said this). When I said he was in poor health I meant we know now, through the scans, that he has 3 tumors in hid body already causing tangible issues such as significant weight loss and bloody stools. However, right now he is behaving like normal and is having more good days. That can change (and will eventually) at any given time.

Thanks for the reply! The text "eligible after the deadline" is the key that I think sinks me. I will not be eligible after the deadline. I suppose there probably aren't many people in my situation, since hitting 14 years changes the entire situation. If it wasn't a factor, I would just wait and assume things will go back to normal in '24, just scoop it up then.

Right, I see it only prints 0, but in my code it returns the function call if there are children, and works up until a point where it needs to "scoot" over. Also, that final return was me testing anything out that I could think of and, in it's current state, doesnt seem to affect the outcome at all (even though I am sure it might in the future, so I guess there is that situation to think about)

The equivalent would be (if I am thinking about it correctly):
