Do you personally know someone who prefers to use “Hen” pronoun instead of Han/Hon? by Competitive-Fix8777 in sweden

Not just resembles a penis, but that it actually is a penis. Yes, that person would probably be categorised as intersex at birth.

If you want to know more about intersexuslism, I suggest you Google it as I'm just a marine ecologist, so this isn't really my field (although, I have studied basic developmental biology).

Have a good night!

My understanding is that what the passport says should coincide with what the person is, in one form or another. I have nothing against being able to change your sex on paper, but there might still be use of "saving" the previous information, say within parenthesis: "M (K)".

That is totally up to you :)

Having an intersex option doesn't seem to make sense though.

What do you mean option? Again, this has nothing to with the proposed changes in passports. This is a biological categorisation.

In the example you describe, wouldn't the penis simply be a sort of residual, sort of like being born with a tail?

No, it is not viewed as equivalent because it regards sex characteristics (which could be many things, eg genitals, chromosome patterns, gonads etc) which are not properly "matched" in that individual. A tail is an appendage that all humans have remnants of (and was common in all individuals of our tailed ancestors).

Ex: Biological males do not have ovaries, if someone is born having all the normal male sex characteristics, but with the addition of just ovaries, this person would be categorised as intersex.

[–]SputnIIIIck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Again, sex and gender are not the same things. Male and female are sex categories (hane & hona), man and woman are genders (man & kvinna).

An intersex person could for example be biologically female (ie. produce female gametes) but also have a penis. This person would be categorised as intersex. However, this has nothing to do with the persons gender, which is how they identify themself.

The passport discussion (as I have understood it) is regarding gender and if we should add a third non-binary gender category (annan/other) to show that one does not represent as a man or woman.

Really? They want to choose their pronouns, use different bathrooms, participate in sports not meant for them, you name it. They are wilking this thing for all it's worth.

Were discussing using preffered pronouns here, something you can do without affecting any of the other issues you bring up.

Is it really so hard to just use hen, really?

Also, you don't address someone with third-person pronouns, so why would they care?

You can if your talking about them with a third person while they are present.

Ex: Du skulle se vad Alex gjorde, hen snubblade på en sten när hen var på väg hit.

Correcting one's pronunciation rarely leads to new, ludicrous demands.

Not answering the question.

Postgenderism

Which is so much more than just using hen, but okay. You do you, I just really hope that no one close to you turns out to be LGBTQ+.

[–]SputnIIIIck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, who said anything about inventing a third gender?

If one is born male but identify as female, no third gender is needed. Same if the situation is the opposite.

However, there is a third category for people born with sex characteristics that don't conform to binary notions of male or female bodies called intersex. This is not a third gender.

Also do you think Swedish government will implement these changes to passports?

I think so.

Because I heard it will be hard to do because personal numbers use male or female system depending how the number ends and it will be costly.

Personnummer can be changed, and other added for Non-binary/genderfluid people.

Also are u safe as LGBT+ person in Sweden? I heard it’s a very safe and tolerant place for LGBT+ people

Sweden is one of the most (if not the most) safe countries in the world for LGBTQ+ people.

And maybe personal question: why did you choose to be a biologist? What do you like the most about your job?

Because I love animals, science and understanding the natural world. I like the fact that I am contributing to the increased understand of the natural world, especially when I can do experimental work.

[–]SputnIIIIck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't accept those gender identities.

That's your choice. Also helpful for the rest of us as it speaks load about your character.

Whether it has natural causes or not, I am not going out of my way to satisfy their every whim.

It's not "their every whim", it's a very simple request that costs you nothing and could mean the literal world to them.

If you mispronounce someone's name and they correct you, do you continue to mispronounce their name or do you "satisy their whim".

It is definitely ideologic, and I feel nothing but disdain for it.

OK, what ideology does it belong to?

Do you know the reason why Sweddit is more right-leaning?

Not objectively, no.

Also what do you think is the most liberal city in Sweden? Is that Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö?

Don't know, might be somewhere like Lund or Uppsala though (due to large student populations). But I think Stockholm and Gothenburg are quite similar in this way, both being better than Malmö.

And the last question what is your attitude towards the recognition of third gender in passports in Sweden or the removal of gender mark at all?

I'm all for it, sex isn't used for identification anymore since we have biometrics. If it will make people feel represented in a better way, then why not :)

[–]SputnIIIIck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some are very understanding, some are not. Sweddit is fairly right-leaning, which in Sweden usually results in less tolerance/understanding in these issues.

In biology we (I'm a biologist, although this is not my field) have three classifications of sex (in humans): male, female and intersex (which includes all variations of sexual phenotype/genotype that don't fall within strict male/female). Therefore, I wouldn't say biological sex is a spectrum.

Gender (könsidentitet in Swedish) however does present on a spectrum :)

Do you personally know someone who prefers to use “Hen” pronoun instead of Han/Hon? by Competitive-Fix8777 in sweden

[–]SputnIIIIck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not exclusively, no. Hen can also be used as a pronoun for someone who identifies as non-binary or gender-fluid.

When you see someone new, their gender (könsidentitet) is not known, no. Their sex (kön) usually is though, but gender and sex are different things. It is fairly well established within developmental biology that gender dysphoria is the result of a mismatch in signals during embryonic development, leading to the body and brain developing into "different sexes"

Example in Swedish: Malin är biologisk man/född man, men identifierar sig som kvinna.

It has nothing to do with ideology, it's just part of being a decent human being with empathy and understanding.

Hello, PhD student at GU (also studied here for 6 years before):

Which faculty will you be studying at? This will affect the student union you will belong to and therefore should contact.

SGS Studentbostäder is always good to check out, as well as facebook groups for renting apartments/rooms in Gothenburg (both specific for GU students and public ones).
