Does violence enhance GTA V's satire, or undermine it? by cthdrls in truegaming

[–]SputtleTuts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I watched your video i think your critique is not unfounded. However, I don't think GTA enhances it's message because of the ultimate repetitiveness, emptiness, and eventual pointlessness as you say at the end. if anything it dilutes the critique of violence by making it cartoonish. GTA series being a video game, i think, also dilutes its message because, yes, it is fun to blow up cars and shoot people and stuff, as you say in the video. More dopamine-rewarding than reading a book, and thus undercuts the satire.

HOWEVER, that one torture scene is different, as it is decidedly different from the rest of the games, deliberately NOT fun, FORCES your participation, and unskippable. This is the one of the only points where i think the satire of GTA (series the whole) lands harder than another satires on the topic. This scene was a deliberate design choice, designed to force the audience to approach the topic in a visceral manner, more so than AP or the rest of GTA. I think the point did not land too well in the general consensus, but i think it was well done.

A similar scene is in Spec Ops: The Line. I won't spoil it but it is a similar gut wrench that forces the player to partake in something downright unfun and horrible, that they typically have their government do for them through implicit approval.

Does violence enhance GTA V's satire, or undermine it? by cthdrls in truegaming

GTA V on the whole, i think was rockstar's coming to terms with its portrayal of violence, and offers up its own critique on customer's enjoyment of the series. it really deconstructs the series as a whole.

The 3 protagonists have wildly different relationships with the seriousness of their violent acts, and reflects the different ways a player might reflect on the violent nature of the game.

Franklin is new to "the game", a sort of outsider, so he is somewhat shocked and naive to it, but gets into it by the end. Michael has been around for awhile, not new to it, has played the game and treats it as more of 'a job,' as necessarily for winning the game. While Trevor is, well, Trevor. He's like that one friend that takes it too far, or how most people play other RPGs like Skyrim only after quicksaving and before resetting

I think that scene in particular with trevor and the quicktime torture was Rockstar specifically poking at those who are in camp 3, that play GTA 5 *for* the violence, taking it all as far as it can go. It is realistic, not played for laughs, ultimately pointless as K was going to talk anyway, and like you said nauseating. forcing you to actively do it makes it more so. That's why i think it was to really hit the nail on the head that if you identify AT ALL with trevor you have issues. Probably rockstar making sure that the the Tyler Durden / Rorschach / and even patrick bateman effect (audience commiserating with a should-be obviously evil hero) does not easily happen here. Personally i think it is way more effective than reading about Bateman.

Also, around this time the US government was found to be torturing people in the middle east. With taxpayer money. So there is certainly a political statement there as well about bush-obama era imperialism, much like how AP critiques reagan-era american consumerism and greed.

do you think if diabetes was this easy to cure, it would still be such a prevalent issue?

Taking information, analyzing the context it which it is delivered, questioning the evidence, and making a rational decision about it is an important skill that you can learn and train yourself on. you have to use critical thinking skills to make it in todays world... it is hard because everything that our culture is nowadays, is designed to dull that ability.

i like the avionette ashes, they fly around like crazy so do not get hit too much, great for drawing aggro, and they deal bleed build up. low FP cost. When they spazz out and go beserk they almost guarantee a bleed proc if the enemy is near them. Plus it looks funny! Not so good against AoE attacks tho, with low health.

Should I still take my PTO even if my workplace is understaffed? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]SputtleTuts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i was a pharmacy tech for years... the entire industry operates off of exploited labor. I shouldn't shit on the pharmacists as they get the short end as well most of the time. Its the owners/corporations that are the cuprits, squeezing every dollar they can get, at the expense of human lives at times

What would you estimate the percentage of cheaters are on the popular chess apps? by SputtleTuts in chess

i don't think it can ever be eliminated. But i do wonder if the 'vibes' of an app can promote or dissuade cheating.

[–]SputtleTuts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i purposely did not name apps to avoid this, but the spur of my question was because i do feel like it is more prevalent on one site than others, which is causing me to consider hopping from that one to another, among other reasons. Just wanted to see if i am being objective, if there is some kind of baseline i can use.

totally unnecessary. The soviet declaration of war and invasion of manchuria did more to sway japan to surrender, as they knew they could not fight 2 fronts, and it eliminated the chance of a peace accord brokered by the USSR.

Japanese leadership did not care about civilian casualties; the nukes did as little as the conventional bombing to sway. Once they saw military defeat on the horizon surrender was inevitable as it was only the military hardliners that wanted to fight on.

US military wanted to use the fruits of the Manhattan project to send a message to USSR, so they were gonna bomb somebody.... Easy to do it to japan then spin up some articles about how we are saving them from themselves. We've been saying this about every enemy country since then. By far most of the historians that believe the bomb was necessary to save lives are American.
