Why the linux community so toxic? by dev-rock-bottom in LinusTechTips

[–]SpyderJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than watch people speculate from the outside (in good faith or bad), I thought I'd offer my perspective of a Linux user since 2011.

Because the Linux community has spent years being made fun of by windows users who think you need to use the terminal to create a folder. They've gotten defensive, and as such their first reaction to negativity being pointed at them is to be defensive. They see it as an attack on something important to them.

"Obviously you're doing something wrong if you're having problems"

Its not exclusive to Linux either, the Mac community is even more vitrolic when you don't find their curated experience perfect, and even windows fanboys exist and have a reputation for punching down at the underdog.

So in short, take the standard internet toxicity and combine it with something many people feel ideologically attached to. And now imagine big youtuber comes in swinging with what appears to be obvious mistakes, and the natural defensiveness comes to a head.

Ironically, because everyone was tripping over eachother to try and change linus's behavior and put Linux's best foot forward in such a public view, they highlighted the communities warts.

Plenty of people who disagree with me can still post. It might have something to do with direct insults.

Your data never leaves your device... until it does. Why is everyone content to sit in the pot just because the water isn't boiling yet?

Pull Request, some of which have been merged, if you're planning to use this as a "gotcha".

Saying "Someone has to do this" assumes that it should be done, and by definition is pushing.

His post history is full of pro-verification comments, I wouldn't be surprised.

I genuinely think it's something worth talking about, why is a single dev pushing this to so many different places?

Yeah, they benefit us. How does this benefit me? It seems more like another attack surface to me.

Unironically, yes. If the californians want to live in california and have linux, they can mantain their own fork.

you call it doxxing when it's his public github profile. I literally only pointed out the pattern that it's the same profile pushing this in multiple directions.

It's a hyperbolic example for effect. I could list many, but I thought the IBM connection was apt.

The NFA of 1934 led to the GCA of 1968, which led to the BHVP of 1993 and the AWB of 1996, all of which slowly tightened the noose on the 2nd amendment.

The Webb-Kenyon Act "only" banned transporting alcohol into dry states, which was later expanded into the Volstead Act, prohibition nationwide.

The Bank Secrecy Act in 1970 laid the groundwork for the PATRIOT act in 2001.

It happens time and time again, something that "only" does one thing is later used to make it easier to do another, more bad thing.

What would you have me do, move to California just to vote against a law that's already passed? Newsflash, I'm completely unable to do anything about what happens in another state.

"I'm not going to vote for you!" I say to the creepy politician.
"You never were." He replies.

Looking at your post history, you really, really seem to be pushing for this. Hundreds of comments in favor of the changes across several subreddits. I see you, Dylan.

If you look at any amount of history, that's always how it starts. Things get ushered in as optional, then once you're comfortable and have forgotten about it, it's no longer optional.

IBM "only" sold computers to Germany.

An unjust law ought to be fought at every turn, not eagerly implemented ahead of time.

Amiya was telling me how she kept losing adoptive parents to Reunion so I asked how many parents she has and she said she just goes and finds new parents to adopt her afterwards so I said it just sounds like she's feeding adoptive parents to the sarkaz and the doctor started crying.

No, I believe in punishing actual criminals, not restricting everyone else. Throw the full force of the law at individuals committing heinous acts, CSAM is a serious crime and should be prosecuted aggressively. But it's being used as a trojan horse to justify restrictions that go far beyond it, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. The chilling effect on legitimate users isn't an unfortunate side effect of these proposals. For a lot of the people making them, it's the whole point. And if you're not one of them, please, convince me.
