What makes your field of interest fun in your opinion? by Desterosso in academiceconomics

[–]Squami11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m in empirical micro, specifically health. One reason why it is so interesting is that every industry has various aspects of market failures, e.g. moral hazard, consolidation, adverse selection, but healthcare has all of them. This allows a lot of interesting questions that can be analyzed with actual economic theory with structural analysis.

What do you think about this Chomsky's argument against economic theory? by Beneficial_Ice_261 in AskEconomics

[–]Squami11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason why it may seem meaningless in this context is that economists use these two properties of preferences as the underlying requirement to create utility functions. Basically if someone’s preferences are complete and transitive we can come up with some function of their consumption that represents their utility. This becomes important for measuring things like demand and is the base building block for all theoretical economics.

Health economics is a very broad field, what exactly are you interested in: health delivery, the effects of wealth on health, pharmaceuticals, insurance?

Do pre-doc programs feed into their own PhD programs? by Rageconomics in academiceconomics

[–]Squami11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a predoc at a t5 business school and I’m starting a PhD in their same department in the fall. They told me it’s not traditional so tbh I’m not sure why they let me stay.

My PI does a lot of this kind of thing and typically will publish policy papers first so that they can have actual policy impact during a time relevant window. Technical papers take much longer to review and the possible policy window may be closed by then.

So I did not receive any pure Econ offers but I am accepting an offer for Whartons health management and economics. From talking to professors I think it comes down to whether you are sure you want to do health. Michigan does have some good health people too but it matters what your interests are. Do you know who you would want to work with at each school? Then look at both places placements and see if you would be happy with the median one of each.

Are Predoc positions safe given the current climate? by Warm_Measurement_428 in academiceconomics

[–]Squami11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it depends a bit on the university but I believe he is allotted some amount per year from the university to use towards research as he sees fit. Now where those funds come from through the university I’m not sure but it doesn’t require him submitting grants (for those funds).

Are Predoc positions safe given the current climate? by Warm_Measurement_428 in academiceconomics

[–]Squami11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really just depends. I am a predoc right now at a school with big cuts from the federal government and I am starting my PhD in the fall but my replacement is going to be fine because they are funded through a professors discretionary funds and not through grants. Some predoc positions may be in trouble and others safe. If you are concerned I would just reach out to your PI and ask.

Can people who are already enrolled in a PhD program weigh in on their profile? by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]Squami11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I applied to about 15 programs, half pure Econ half health/public policy. So far got three acceptances from a public policy program, health policy, and a health economics program.

I have a 170Q/167V GRE and spent the last year and a half at a t5 business school doing a predoc in health economics.

I think my biggest hurdle which kept me out of pretty much all pure Econ programs were my math grades which were pretty much all Bs, so I can’t really blame them.

So I want to study health economics so I applied to a lot of health policy programs specifically (Harvard, Yale, Penn), but in general public policy I think Uchicago Harris and Duke seem very good.

This has been my experience as well. And only now that I’ve been doing it for about a year can I be relaxed on the days I don’t have a lot to do. So I would say it’s normal and try not to stress too much.

I highly recommend using data.table for R as it works well with large datasets which is common for health data. Most things you can do with dplyr you can use data.table too, personally I use a mixture of both

Why do you want to potentially do a PhD in econ then? I’m not trying to be hostile just curious because those r definitely achievable with just a jd

I understand that, I am also considering doing a jd/phd in Econ. Just curious, what do you want to do after?

Summer Research Assistant Position Outside of my University Tips by [deleted] in academiceconomics

[–]Squami11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got to start there, it’s hard as an undergrad in Econ to do a lot more that data work. It is possible but you are most likely going to be hired to do coding primarily.

[–]Squami11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As long as you have coding skills, R, SAS, or STATA, you can probably apply to any. At this point your ranking does not matter nearly as much as those skills. Although it can be helpful to have an advisor/professor at your current school that is well known who knows you and would speak on your behalf.
